  • We determined threshold environmental factros to initiate infection of pepper plants by Botrytis cinerea, a fungal pathogen of pepper gray mold, in two greenhouse conditions. A new efficient spore-trapping method was developed to estimate population density of airborne conidia in the greenhouses, and spore release was measured using a Kerssies' selective medium. At a given day, spores were released greater during daytime (mostly from 7:30 am to 10:30 am and at 4:30 pm) than nighttime. Diurnal and nocturnal temperatures in the greenhouse-1 were about $25^{\circ}$ and $17^{\circ}$,and relative humidity was 100% for prolonged 24 h due to rain on December 17, 1997. Population density of air-borne conidia was 3.0$\times$103 conidia/ $0.5\textrm{m}^3$ after two days, and the initial infection occurred in ten days. During the same period of time in the greenhouse-2, diurnal temperature was about $25^{\circ}$ and nocturnal temperature was below $15^{\circ}$, and population density of air-borne conidia was 104 conidia/ $0.5\textrm{m}^3$. Under these conditions, the initial infection started in three days. This indicates that the early infection occurs under which diurnal temperature is approximately $25^{\circ}$, nocturnal temperature is maintained below $15^{\circ}$, and population density of air-borne conidia is 104 conidia/ $0.5\textrm{m}^3$ at saturated relative humidity condition.

  • A weekend effect has been investigated in diurnal temperature range (DTR) for Seoul in Korea using 50-year (1955 ~ 2005) surface measurements of maximum and minimum temperatures, and particle mass concentrations (PM10). The minimum temperature increases by 0.42K per decade, 2 times faster than the maximum temperature during 1955 to 2005, for rapid urbanization has occurred in Seoul. The weekend effect, which is defined as the DTR for Sunday minus the average DTR for Tuseday through Thursday, can be as large as +0.08 K for the recent 20-year period relative to 0.01K for 1955 to 1975. Especially the wintertime DTR tends to have a remarkable positive weekend effect (+0.17K), that is, larger DTR on Sunday compared to weekdays, which seems to be associated with increased maximum temperature and thus an increase in DTR. This result could be explained by relative differences in PM10 concentration between Sunday and weekdays (Tuesday through Thursday), such that PM10 concentration on Sundays appears to be systematically lower about 12% than on weekdays. The annually average weekend DTR increases by 0.2K with $10{\mu}gm^{-3}$ decrease in PM10 concentration in comparison with weekdays. The results could be possible evidence of an anthropogenic link to DTR, one of climate important indicators, since no meteorological phenomenon is supposed to occur over a 7 day cycle.

  • Morphology, anatomy and diurnal acid fluctuations were investigated monthly for the succulent C4 dicot Portulaca grandiflora Hook. growing under natural environmental conditions. Modified Kranz-Type sturcture and typical CAM-like cells were shown in leaves and stems, respectively. Values of indices of mesophyll succulence inleaves stems were 5.62 and 16.68, respectively. The number of stomata were 1476$\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ in leaves while the stomata in stems were not observed through growing seasons from spring to summer. However, on Sep. 16, 1981 in defoliate autumn season, stomata were begun to be produced for the first time in stems and the number were increased gradually to 216$\textrm{cm}^{-2}$ on Oct. 29. This feature can be interpreted as a seasonal plant dimorphism. P. grandiflora exhibited a diurnal fluctuation of titratable acidity in leaves and stems. Seasonal amplitudes of acid fluctuation in stems were as follows: 27 $\mu$eq./g.f.wt. on Sep. 21; 57$\mu$eq/g.f.wt. on Oct. 3; 80$\mu$eq./g.f.wt. on Oct. 21. Such the results in seasonal amplitude were able to consider due to decrease of light period and cool night air temperature according to change of season. Also, the naturally defoliated stems which had already stomata exhibited usual diurnal acid fluctuation, on the other hand the treated stems which possessed artificially closed stomata showed a few of acid fluctuation. Especially, stomata in stems are developed by seasonal dimorphism and activated stomata participate in CAM behavior of stems.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of spacio-temporal variation for $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ concentration in Busan. $PM_{10}$ concentration has been reduced for the past three year and exceeded $50\;{\mu}g/m^3$ of the national standard for $PM_{10}$. $PM_{2.5}$ concentration showed gradual decrease or stagnant trends and exceeded the U.S. EPA standard. Seasonal analysis of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ suggested spring>winter>fall>summer(by Asian dust) and winter>spring>summerenlifall(by anthropogenic effect) in the order of high concentration, respectively. Characterization of diurnal variations suggests that $PM_{10}$ levels at all the three sites consistently exhibited a peak at 1000LST and $PM_{2.5}$ at Jangrimdong experienced the typical $PM_{2.5}$ diurnal trends such that a peak was observed in the morning and the lowest level at 1400LST. In the case of seasonal trends, the $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ ratio was in the order of summer>winter>fall>spring at all the study sites, with a note that spring bears the lowest concentration. During AD events, $PM_{10}$ concentration exhibited the highest level at Jangrimdong and the lowest level at Joadong. And $PM_{2.5}/PM_{10}$ ratio in AD was 0.16~0.28.

  • As dust storms originated in Neimongu Plateau and Manchuria became more frequent in Korea, there was a growing need for Asian Dust (Hwangsa) monitoring stations in North Korea, which is a pathway of Asian Dust to South Korea. The South Korean and the North Korean Governments agreed to build the Automatic Weather System and the PM10 measurement instruments in the Gaeseong Industrial Zone and the Keumgangsan Tourist Region, North Korea in 2007. PM10 mass concentration data in the Keumgangsan Tourist Region could be collected only during the period from September 2007 to May 2008. In this study, daily, monthly and diurnal variations of PM10 mass concentration of the Keumgangsan are analyzed and compared with those of Sokcho and Gwangdeoksan. Three sites show similar variations in daily and monthly means. Correlation coefficients (r) between Sokcho and Keumgangsan, and between Gwangdeoksan and Keumgangsan are 0.89 and 0.67, respectively. But diurnal variation at Keumgangsan has a distinct feature compared to the other sites. Diurnal PM10 variation shows two peaks around 8 AM and 4-5 PM and very low at night. The difference between the daily maximum and minimum is $20{\sim}60{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during September to November 2007. Temperature, relative humidity and wind speed from the Keumgangsan AWS data were compared with those from the Changjon station, and showed good correlation each other except wind speed.

  • To investigate the physical characteristics and variations of oceanic parameters in the tropical central North Pacific, oceanographic surveys were carried out in summer of 2006 and 2007. The survey periods were classified by Oceanic Ni$\tilde{n}$o Index as a weak El Ni$\tilde{n}$o in 2006 and a medium La Ni$\tilde{n}$a in 2007. The survey instruments were used to acquire data on CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth), XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph), and TSG (Thermosalinograph). The dominant temporal variation of surface temperature was diurnal. The diurnal variation in 2007, when the La Ni$\tilde{n}$a weather pattern was in place, was stronger than that in 2006. Surface salinity in 2006 was affected by a northwestward branch of North Equatorial Current, which implies that the El Ni$\tilde{n}$o affects surface properties in the North Equatorial Current region. Two salinity minimum layers existed at stations east of Chuuk in both year's observations. The climatological vertical salinity section along $180^{\circ}E$ shows that the two salinity minimum layers exist in $2^{\circ}N{\sim}12^{\circ}N$ region, consistent with our observations. Analysis of isopycnal lines over the salinity section implies that the upper salinity minimum layer is from intrusion of the upper part of North Pacific Intermediate Water into the lower part of South Pacific Subtropical Surface Water and the lower salinity minimum layer is from Antarctic Intermediate Water.

  • Several reports have indicated that a rectal temperature of buffaloes is easily influenced by their surroundings. To clarify an effect of changing environmental temperature on thermoregulatory responses of buffaloes, an environment with diurnal temperature changes of $25^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$ was created using an artificial climate laboratory. Three swamp buffaloes and three Friesian cows were exposed to three different experimental periods as follows: Period 1 (constant temperature of $30^{\circ}C$, Period 2 (diurnally changing temperature) and Period 3 (diurnally changing temperature and fasting). Heat production, rectal temperature, respiration rate, heart rate and respiration volume were measured during each period. Rectal temperature of the buffaloes fluctuated diurnally with the changing temperature (Periods 2 and 3), but remained constant in cows. Mean heat production was significantly lower in buffaloes than in cows in Period 2 and 3. However, the maximum rectal temperature and the increment of heat production were not always lower in buffaloes than in cows during Period 2. These results show that a rectal temperature and heat production in buffaloes are markedly influenced by the diurnal changes in temperature. Compared with Bos Taurus cows, the differences may be attributed to the physiological features of buffaloes including a high heat conductivity of their bodies and an lower heat production.
