When the hot water is supplied through the district heating (DH) pipeline, a pressure differential control valve (PDCV) protects the DH user equipment from the high pressure DH water and helps to supply DH water to long distance. It also controls the temperature and adjust the pressure in the main district heating pipeline. However, cavitation occurs in PDCV due to the use of high pressure DH water. It causes frequent failures and many problems. It also causes energy loss and complaints to both operators and users. In order to solve these problems, we will introduce the energy saving technology to replace the primary side PDCV with hydraulic turbine, convert the differential pressure into electricity, and utilize electricity as the power of the secondary side pump.
As P-new-city is planned and constructed, district eating utilizing an existing near-by power plant's waste heat is considered as an economic and environment friendly way of providing heating to the new city. Many pipeline diameters and pumping station location and capacity were assumed, investigated and optimized, to satisfy the customers' heat demand considering common district heating pipe-network design and construction practice, and also and construction, pumping station land price and construction and the pumping energy cost during lifetime of DH systems.
Failure analysis on the welded type 304 pipe used for cooling water piping in the district heating primary side was conducted. Inorganic elements and bacteria in the cooling water and in corrosion products were analyzed, and the weldment was inspected by microscopy and a sensitization test. Corrosion damages were observed in the heat-affected zone, on weld defects such as incomplete fusion or excessive penetration caused by improper welding, or/and at the 6 o'clock position along the pipe axial direction. However, the level of concentration of chloride in the cooling water as low as 80 ppm has been reported to be not enough for even a sensitized type 304 steel, meaning that the additional corrosive factor was required for these corrosion damages. The factor leading to these corrosion damages was drawn to be the metabolisms of the types of bacteria, which is proved by the detection of proton, sulfur containing species, biofilms, and both bacteria and corrosion product analyses.
The air vent connected to a heat supply pipeline in the district heating system has been used to eliminate the existing air in the pipe, which has a detrimental effect on corrosion durability and heat efficiency. Recently, the air vent installed under a manhole for 22 years was corroded and several pinholes were detected in the front-end of the air vent. To identify the cause of the failure, thickness reduction, corrosion products, and water quality were examined. The corrosion damage was significant at the outside of the front-end of the air vent where the insulator was covered. While a thin oxide layer was formed in the interior of the tube, the coarse and porous corrosion products consisting of magnetite and hematite were found externally. Water flowing into the thermal insulator was absorbed by the insulator following hydrolysis. The hydrolyzed insulator ejected the corrosion factors such as Cl-, SO42-, and NH4+. The findings suggest that the corrosion under insulation due to rain water is the main cause of the underlying failure in the air vent.

In this study, we developed a heat supply control algorithm that minimizes the heat loss in the heat distribution pipelines used for supplying heat energy to shared group housing. Controlling the temperature and flow rate of the hot water supplied to the heat exchanger for shared group housing enables us to develop a heat supply control technique that meets the heating load required by each household in a shared apartment building in accordance with changes in the outdoor air temperature, and that minimizes the heat loss occurring in the heat distribution pipeline. A one-year study in 2008 on a 1,473-household D-apartment building in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, compared the heat capacity used by each household, as well as the heat capacity supplied to the heat exchanger room of the apartment housing building, to calculate the amount of heat loss in the heat distribution pipeline. The results confirmed that 24.1% of the heat supplied was lost in the piping.

In this study, a corrosion failure analysis of a heat transport pipe was conducted, as the result of a pinhole leak. Interestingly, the corrosion damage occurred externally in the pipeline, resulting in severe thickness reduction near the seam line. Also, while a stable magnetite protective film formed on the inner surface, the manganese oxide formation occurred only on the outer surface. The interior and exterior of the pipe were composed of ferrite and pearlite. The large manganese sulfide and alumina inclusions were found near the seam line. In addition, the manganese sulfide inclusions resulted in grooving corrosion, which progressed in the seam line leading to the reduction in the thickness, followed by the exposure of the alumina in the matrix to the outer surface. To note, the corrosion was accelerated by pits generated from the boundaries separating the inclusions from the matrix, which resulted in pinhole leaks and water loss.
District heating was first introduced in Korea in 1985. As the service life of the underground thermal piping network has increased for more than 30 years, the maintenance of the underground thermal pipe has become an important issue. A variety of complex technologies are required for periodic inspection and operation management for the maintenance of the aged thermal piping network. Especially, it is required to develop a model that can be used for decision making in order to derive optimal maintenance and replacement point from the economic viewpoint in the field. In this study, the analysis was carried out based on the repair history and accident data at the operation of the thermal pipe network of five districts in the Korea District Heating Corporation. A failure probability model was developed by introducing statistical techniques of qualitative analysis and binomial logistic regression analysis. As a result of qualitative analysis of maintenance history and accident data, the most important cause of pipeline damage was construction erosion, corrosion of pipe and bad material accounted for about 82%. In the statistical model analysis, by setting the separation point of the classification to 0.25, the accuracy of the thermal pipe breakage and non-breakage classification improved to 73.5%. In order to establish the failure probability model, the fitness of the model was verified through the Hosmer and Lemeshow test, the independent test of the independent variables, and the Chi-Square test of the model. According to the results of analysis of the risk of thermal pipe network damage, the highest probability of failure was analyzed as the thermal pipeline constructed by the F construction company in the reducer pipe of less than 250mm, which is more than 10 years on the Seoul area motorway in winter. The results of this study can be used to prioritize maintenance, preventive inspection, and replacement of thermal piping systems. In addition, it will be possible to reduce the frequency of thermal pipeline damage and to use it more aggressively to manage thermal piping network by establishing and coping with accident prevention plan in advance such as inspection and maintenance.

In this study, the behavior of underground pipeline subjected to pile driving is examined using the verified finite element model based on the field experiment. Young's modules of surface soil is varied and elastic modulus of the other soil layer is fixed. The pile driving force model proposed by Mounir E. Mabsout in 1999 was used and it was functions of time and of force. The forcing function applied on this study considers the kinetic energy of ram located at 1.2m height with 7 tonf. The 3-layered pipeline is composed of steel(inner) pipe, PUR(Polyurethane Resin, filler) and HDPE(outer) pipe, and the length/diameter of main steel pipe is 20m/0.8m(O.D). It is used for district heating pipes in Korea. The results are expressed in terms of Von Mises stress, displacement, and vibration velocity for each soil condition. From the results of the analyses, PUR which is originally intended as a thermal insulation of inner pipe shows performance as a structural member which distributes external pressure.
The thermally insulated underground pipelines have been used for district heating system. The sensor wire embedded in the insulation was used for monitoring the insulating resistance between the sensor wire and the pipe. The resistance measurement system detects corrosion of steel pipe under insulation. The corrosion and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) characteristics of sensor wire in synthetic ground water were investigated using the electrochemical methods and constant load SCC tests. The polarization tests were used to study the electrochemical behavior of sensor wire. The sensor wire was passivated at temperatures ranging from 25 to $95^{\circ}C$. However, the applied sensing current larger than passive current resulted in breakdown of passive film. The constant load SCC tests were performed to investigate the effects of applied current and load on the fracture behavior. Stress-corrosion cracks initiated at pits that were produced by sensing current. The growth of the pit involves a tunnelling mechanism, which leads to ductile fracture.
This study has been performed to evaluate the safety of the retainer-type ball valve for a high-pressure pipeline to a district heating plant. The retainer-type ball valve is an improved design for conventional ball valves, such as the floating ball valve and the trunnion ball valve. Numerical analysis of the valve design verification has been applied to investigate the safety factor and seat leakage of the DN300 and DN400 sizes. The given condition to solve the structural analysis was based on the international standard for ISO 5208. In this study, the methods for structural analysis are described in detail. The structural analysis results present the deformations, the equivalent stresses, and the safety factors. Through these results, this study successfully demonstrates the safety and seat leakage of the retainer-type ball valve. They also streamline the process of development for valve manufacturing.
