  • The Asiatic pink stem borer, Sesamia inferens (Walker, 1856) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a pest that attacks rice stems. In this study, we estimated the annual generation of insect in several regions of the Republic of Korea. Adult trapping using a sex pheromone trap detected the occurrence of S. inferens adults in the three northernmost areas around 38° latitude and showed that the insect inhabits all of Korea. In most areas investigated, the seasons of the adult generations estimated using the single-sine degree-day model did not deviate from the corresponding observed seasons of adult occurrence. We estimated that the overwintering larvae hypothetically-estimated using the model could be originated from the last generation of adults. When larvae collected in paddy fields during the autumn season in a few middle and southern areas were reared at 25℃, ca. 70% of pupae did not show additional larval molting before their pupation. All larvae collected in early March in a southern area (Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do) pupated without additional larval molting when reared at 25℃. Based on these results, we presumed that S. inferens could overwinter as mainly the last instar larval stage in the area. Taken together, we conclude that S. inferens primarily has two generations per year in areas around 38° latitude, and three generations in the areas between 35.3° and 37.3° latitude. In addition, approximately 35% of insects captured by the sex pheromone trap were species other than S. inferens, as determined by analyzing the nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene. These species were not morphologically misidentified as S. inferens.

  • The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system, which is part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays a vital role in immune responses by differentiating between itself and foreign cells and antigens. The significant diversity of alleles affects disease susceptibility and immune responses within different populations. Specifically, the HLA-A and HLA-DRB1 alleles are associated with various immune-related diseases, and understanding the frequency and haplotype associations of these alleles is vital for genetic and immunological research. To investigate the distribution of these characteristics in Koreans, we isolated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from blood samples donated by volunteers at the Seoul Central Blood Bank and performed HLA typing on 790 samples. Our study found that the HLA-A and HLA-DRB1 alleles are widely distributed within the Korean population, with HLA-A*24:02 (21.7%) and HLA-DRB1*09:01 (9.9%) being the most frequent. Significant haplotype associations between specific HLA-A and HLA-DRB1 alleles were identified using the Chi-square test, suggesting that certain genetic combinations may influence disease onset. This insight could contribute to the development of predictive and preventative strategies for various diseases. The unique genetic characteristics of the Korean population highlight the importance of studying the HLA allele and the haplotype distributions in this group as key indicators for understanding disease susceptibility.

  • Recently, resources-rich advanced countries are putting more effort into mineral resource exploration as mineral resource depletion worsens along with deepening resource nationalism regarding mineral resources. Therefore, one of the methods used to explore mineral resources is to explore through the chemical composition of mineral. Pyrite, which is formed throughout the mineralization process and regardless of the mineral commodity type, is widely used as major geochemical indicator in mineral deposit exploration using content and list of trace elements in the pyrite. In this paper, the author aims to report on indicator elements that can be used when exploring lead-zinc orebody by studying the occurrence and chemical composition of pyrites from wallrock, wallrock alteration and lead-zinc orebody in the Janggun lead-zinc deposit. This deposit is hydrothermal replacement deposit formed by reaction of lead and zinc-bearing hydrothermal fluid and Paleozoic Janggum limestone formation. The wallrock alteration that is remarkably recognized with Pb-Zn mineralization at this hydrothermal replacement orebody consists of mainly rhodochrositization with minor of dolomitization, pyritization, sericitization and chloritization. Pyrite, which is occurred from wallrock, wallrock alteration, and lead-zinc orebody, is classified into three types (Py I type, Py II type, and Py III type) based on the texture, occurrence and paragenetic relationship. Pyrite on the basis of paragenetic sequence are as followed : Py I type (wallrock and wallrock alteration) → Py II type (wallrock alteration and Pb-Zn orebody) → Py III type (wallrock alteration and Pb-Zn orebody). Trace elements with a large content change in pyrite by all types are Mn, As, Ag, Sb and Pb elements, but trace elements with a small content change in pyrite are Zn, Cu, Cd, Se, Te, Co, Ni, Au, In and Sn elements. The substitution of these elements in all pyrite types is as followed: Fe2+↔Co2+ substitution (Py I type), 3Fe2+↔Ag1++(Mn2++Ni2++As2+)+(As3++Sb3+) substitution (Py II type) and 3Fe2+↔Ag1++(Mn2++As2++Pb2+)+(Mn3++As3++Sb3+), S1-↔(As1-+Sb1-) substitution (Py III type). This means that Mn, As, Sb, Ag and Pb elements were enriched during evolution of hydrothermal fluid. Therefore, based on the above research results, pyrite is a useful mineral for exploration of lead-zinc orebody. And when exploring lead-zinc orebody with similar geological conditions, lead-zinc orebody is explored through the enrichment of as indicator elements.

  • We analyzed the changes in the properties of the Mudeungsan tuff by conducting an artificial weathering experiment based on the climatic conditions of Mudeungsan National Park, to evaluate the long-term stability of the columnar jointing in the tuff. The climate of Mudeungsan National Park over 20 years suggests the temperature conditions for freeze-thaw are -20 to 30℃. The change in tuff properties due to weathering were estimated by measuring the elastic wave velocity, which was measured after every 40 freeze-thaw cycles. Based on the origin of the Mudeungsan tuff and fracture distribution in the tuff, the elastic wave velocity in samples from 24 locations was measured at regular intervals in the axial and radial directions. The axial elastic wave velocity of the Mudeungsan tuff is 5,187~5,367 m/s, and the radial elastic wave velocity is 4,001~5,290 m/s. As a result of 200 freeze-thaw cycles, the axial elastic wave velocity decreased by 5.53% for sample MT-1, 4.89% for MT-2, and 5.36% for MT-3. The radial elastic wave velocity decreased by 20.00% for MT-1, 17.02% for MT-2, and 19.84% for MT-3. The decrease in elastic wave velocity due to the freeze-thaw cycles is greater for low values of elastic wave velocity. For the axial elastic wave velocity, the weathering is accelerated after 120 cycles and, for the radial elastic wave velocity, weathering actively progresses from the start of the freeze-thaw cycles. In summary, for a low elastic wave velocity, experimental weathering results in a large decrease in elastic wave velocity. In addition, the Mudeungsan tuff and its columnar joints have a distinct anisotropy.

  • This study aims to investigate the material properties of specimens made from pyrophyllite and pyrophyllite-aluminum mixed powders using high-speed, high-pressure dynamic compression technology. The aluminum powder exhibited a highly uniform particle size distribution ranging from 10 to 100 ㎛, whereas the pyrophyllite powder displayed four distinct particle size distributions: 0.1~1 ㎛, 1~10 ㎛, 80~100 ㎛, and 200~1,000 ㎛. Using high-speed, high-pressure dynamic compression technology with a drop time of approximately 0.34~0.4 seconds and a dynamic load of about 207 tonf, it was possible to fabricate pyrophyllite and pyrophyllite-aluminum mixed powder specimens with a volume of about 548 mm2. The Shore hardness measurement results showed that specimen BG100 had an average of 43.7, BG90 had an average of 33.2, and BG85, BG80, BG75, and BG70 had an average of 31.0, indicating that the specimen with the least aluminum content exhibited the highest Shore hardness value. The thermogravimetric analysis revealed mass losses at two points: the first mass loss occurred at around 270℃ with a loss of approximately 1.45%, and the second mass loss occurred at around 600℃, where BG70 and BG80 showed a mass loss of about 2.53%, and BG75, BG85, and BG90 showed a mass loss of about 3.43%. Scanning electron microscopy analysis indicated that the microstructure of the specimens was similar regardless of the mixing ratio, with three elements-O, Si, and Al-being detected in all specimens. The mapping analysis of BG90 revealed an oxygen weight ratio of 50.80%, silicon weight ratio of 37.36%, and aluminum weight ratio of 11.85%. In the case of BG85, the results were 43.09% oxygen, 43.50% silicon, and 13.41% aluminum; for BG80, the results were 44.83% oxygen, 40.30% silicon, and 14.87% aluminum; for BG75, the results were 44.71% oxygen, 35.49% silicon, and 19.80% aluminum; and for BG70, the results were 34.95% oxygen, 35.73% silicon, and 29.32% aluminum.

  • Ammonia is an eco-friendly marine fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide and is a primary contributor to global warming. Despite its benefits, ammonia poses significant risks owing to its toxicity, explosiveness, and corrosiveness, thus necessitating robust safety measures to manage its potential leaks on ships. This study investigates the characteristics of ammonia leaks and ventilation dynamics in a ship fuel-preparation room, with emphasis on the ef ect of varying the positions of air supply and exhaust outlets. The leakage rate is set at 0.1 kg/s, with a ventilation rate of 30 ACH (air changes per hour). The scenario with air supply at Aft - Top - Stbd and exhaust at Fwd - Top - Stbd (Case 1) results in the highest average ammonia concentration after 100 s. Conversely, the scenario with air supply at Aft - Bottom - Stbd and exhaust at Fwd - Bottom - Port (Case 14) results in the lowest concentration. After 50 s, Case 1 indicate ammonia concentrations exceeding 1500 ppm toward Aft, whereas Case 14 indicate a consistent stagnation zone along the Fwd wall. The distribution of ammonia concentration and velocity varies by height owing to the positioning of the air supply and exhaust outlets as well as the equipment configuration, thus resulting in higher concentrations in areas with slower airflow. When a small amount of ammonia leaked at 0.1 kg/s for 10 s, explosive gas formed near the leak point at a height of approximately 1 m, thus indicating an extremely low risk of explosion from slight ammonia leaks. This study confirms that the optimal combination of air supply and exhaust-duct positions can effectively control ammonia concentration. This finding is expected to contribute to the establishment of design standards and ensure safety when using ammonia as marine fuel.

  • Background: It is most physiologic to measure the diffusing capacity of the lung by using oxygen, but it is so difficult to measure partial pressure of oxygen in the capillary blood of the lung that in clinical practice it is measured by using carbon monoxide, and single-breath diffusing capacity method is used most widely. However, since the process of withholding the breath for 10 seconds after inspiration to the total lung capacity is very hard to practice for patients who suffer from cough, dyspnea, etc, the intra-breath lung diffusing capacity method which requires a single exhalation of low-flow rate without such process was devised. In this study, we want to know whether or not there is any significant difference in the diffusing capacity of the lung measured by the single-breath and intra-breath methods, and if any, which factors have any influence. Methods: We chose randomly 73 persons without regarding specific disease, and after conducting 3 times the flow-volume curve test, we selected forced vital capacity(FVC), percent of predicted forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume within 1 second($FEV_1$), percent of forced expiratory volume within 1 second, the ratio of forced expiratory volume within 1 second against forced vital capacity($FEV_1$/FVC) in test which the sum of FVC and $FEV_1$ is biggest. We measured the diffusing capacity of the lung 3 times in each of the single-breath and intra-breath methods at intervals of 5 minutes, and we evaluated which factors have any influence on the difference of the diffusing capacity of the lung between two methods[the mean values(ml/min/mmHg) of difference between two diffusing capacity measured by two methods] by means of the linear regression method, and obtained the following results: Results: 1) Intra-test reproducibility in the single-breath and intra-breath methods was excellent. 2) There was in general a good correlation between the diffusing capacity of the lung measured by a single-breath method and that measured by the intra-breath method, but there was a significant difference between values measured by both methods($1.01{\pm}0.35ml/min/mmHg$, p<0.01) 3) The difference between the diffusing capacity of the lung measured by both methods was not correlated to FVC, but was correlated to $FEV_1$, percent of $FEV_1$, $FEV_1$/FVC and the gradient of methane concentration which is an indicator of distribution of ventilation, and it was found as a result of the multiple regression test, that the effect of $FEV_1$/FVC was most strong(r=-0.4725, p<0.01) 4) In a graphic view of the difference of diffusing capacity measured by single-breath and intra-breath method and $FEV_1$/FVC, it was found that the former was divided into two groups in section where $FEV_1$/FVC is 50~60%, and that there was no significant difference between two methods in the section where $FEV_1$/FVC is equal or more than 60% ($0.05{\pm}0.24ml/min/mmHg$, p>0.1), but there was significant difference in the section, less than 60%($-4.5{\pm}0.34ml/min/mmHg$, p<0.01). 5. The diffusing capacity of the lung measured by the single-breath and intra-breath method was the same in value($24.3{\pm}0.68ml/min/mmHg$) within the normal range(2%/L) of the methane gas gradient, and there was no difference depending on the measuring method, but if the methane concentration gradients exceed 2%/L, the diffusing capacity of the lung measured by single-breath method became $15.0{\pm}0.44ml/min/mmHg$, and that measured by intra-breath method, $11.9{\pm}0.51ml/min/mmHg$, and there was a significant difference between them(p<0.01). Conclusion: Therefore, in case where $FEV_1$/FVC was less than 60%, the diffusing capacity of the lung measured by intra-breath method represented significantly lower value than that by single-breath method, and it was presumed to be caused largely by a defect of ventilation-distribution, but the possibility could not be excluded that the diffusing capacity of the lung might be overestimated in the single-breath method, or the actual reduction of the diffusing capacity of the lung appeared more sensitively in the intra-breath method.

  • Background: In normal adults, ventilation is uneven and greater in the base than the apex of the lung in tidal volume breathing. However infants have fragile chest wall and reduced elastic recoil, resulting in easy closure of peripheral airways especially in the dependent portion of the lung. So ventilation in infants is greater in the apex than the base of the lung. We assumed that in adults whose closing volume is increased, dependent portion could be easily collapsed during tidal breathing and ventilation could be greater in the uppear than than the lower portion of the lung. Methods: We measured spirometry and closing volume(CV) in normal controls and in patients with chronic lung disease. Also we measured fractional distribution of ventilation at supine, left lateral and right lateral decubitus with $^{133}Xe$ ventilation scan in normal controls, patients with normal closing volume and patients with increased closing volume. Results: The subjects consisted of 7 normal controls(mean $age{\pm}SD$, $62.9{\pm}6.1$ years). 6 patients with normal CV($62.8{\pm}8.2$ years) and 7 patients with increased CV($63.0{\pm}15.3$ years). 1) Normal controls have mean(${\pm}SD$) FVC $104{\pm}11%$ of predicted value, $FEV_1\;120{\pm}16%,\;FEV_1/FVC\;112{\pm}5%$ and CV $86.9{\pm}12.5%$. Patients with normal CV have FVC $62{\pm}11%,\;FEV_1\;54{\pm}17%,\;FEV_1/FVC\;84{\pm}23%$ and CV $92.6{\pm}15.5%$. Patients with increased CV, have FVC $53{\pm}9%,\;FEV_1\;38{\pm}13,\;FEV_1/FVC\;69{\pm}16%$ and CV $176.1{\pm}36.6%$, CV was significantly different between two patient groups(p<0.02) 2). In normal controls mean fractional ventilation to left lung was $48.1{\pm}5.3%$ at supine, $54.1{\pm}9.8%$ at dependent and $40.9{\pm}6.5%$ at left uppermost position. In patients with normal CV mean fractional ventilation to left lung was $44.6{\pm}2.1%$ at supine, $59.7{\pm}5.6%$ at left dependent and $31.7{\pm}8.3%$ at left uppermost position. In patients with increased CV mean fractional ventilation to left lung was $48.7{\pm}4.5%$ at supine, $41.7{\pm}6.6%$ at left dependent and $60.9{\pm}15.7%$ at left uppermost position. In normal controls and patients with normal CV, ventilation to left lung at left dependent position tends to be higher than that at supine position but without statisitical significance and it was significantly lower at left uppermost than at left lung dependent position. In patients with increased CV, ventilation to left at left dependent position tends to be higher than that at supine position but without significance and it was significantly higher at left uppermost than that at left dependent position. Conclusion: These data suggest that in patients with increased CV ventilation to one side of lung could be higher at uppermost than at dependent position on lateral decubitus during tidal breathing and this fact should be taken into account in positioning of patients with unilateral lung disease.

  • In stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), the accurate location of treatment sites should be guaranteed from the respiratory motions of patients. Lots of studies on this topic have been conducted. In this letter, a new verification method simulating the real respiratory motion of heterogenous treatment regions was proposed to investigate the accuracy of lung SBRT for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy. Based on the CT images of lung cancer patients, lung phantoms were fabricated to equip in $QUASAR^{TM}$ respiratory moving phantom using 3D printer. The phantom was bisected in order to measure 2D dose distributions by the insertion of EBT3 film. To ensure the dose calculation accuracy in heterogeneous condition, The homogeneous plastic phantom were also utilized. Two dose algorithms; Analytical Anisotropic Algorithm (AAA) and AcurosXB (AXB) were applied in plan dose calculation processes. In order to evaluate the accuracy of treatments under respiratory motion, we analyzed the gamma index between the plan dose and film dose measured under various moving conditions; static and moving target with or without gating. The CT number of GTV region was 78 HU for real patient and 92 HU for the homemade lung phantom. The gamma pass rates with 3%/3 mm criteria between the plan dose calculated by AAA algorithm and the film doses measured in heterogeneous lung phantom under gated and no gated beam delivery with respiratory motion were 88% and 78%. In static case, 95% of gamma pass rate was presented. In the all cases of homogeneous phantom, the gamma pass rates were more than 99%. Applied AcurosXB algorithm, for heterogeneous phantom, more than 98% and for homogeneous phantom, more than 99% of gamma pass rates were achieved. Since the respiratory amplitude was relatively small and the breath pattern had the longer exhale phase than inhale, the gamma pass rates in 3%/3 mm criteria didn't make any significant difference for various motion conditions. In this study, the new phantom model of 4D dose distribution verification using patient-specific lung phantoms moving in real breathing patterns was successfully implemented. It was also evaluated that the model provides the capability to verify dose distributions delivered in the more realistic condition and also the accuracy of dose calculation.
