  • This paper presents a model for assessing the efficiency of logistics activities in distribution centers. The DEA approach is adopted to compare the relative efficiency of distribution centers, where considered as input and output factors are warehouse floor area, field storage area, average inventory level, overhead costs, number of workers, number of orders, and total value of goods handled. The artificial neural network approach is also adopted to overcome the limitation of DEA. The 12 distribution centers of Korea Telecom are studied for the validation of the model, which results in 84.9% of learning accuracy. This model can be used to identify the inefficient factors in a distribution center and to reveal changes in the degree of efficiency over time.

  • Weibull distribution is a conspicuous distribution known for its accuracy and its usage for wind energy analysis. The two and three parameter Weibull distributions are adopted in this study to fit wind speed data. The daily mean wind speed data of Ennore, Tamil Nadu, India has been used to validate the procedure. The parameters are estimated using maximum likelihood method, least square method and moment method. Four statistical tests namely Root mean square error, R2 test, Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Anderson-Darling test are employed to inspect the fitness of Weibull probability density functions. The value of shape factor, scale factor, wind speed and wind power are determined at a height of 100m using extrapolation of numerical equations. Also, the value of capacity factor is calculated mathematically. This study provides a way to evaluate feasible locations for wind energy assessment, which can be used at any windy site throughout the world.

  • We investigated the distribution of the marine cladoceran resting eggs in the intertidal sediments of Gomso Bay, Korea and compared the data with those in the subtidal sediments. The abundance of the eggs in the top 6cm of the sediments was higher than that in the other depths. The abundances of the eggs in seaward intertidal sediments below mean sea level (MSL) were higher than those in the sediments over MSL, but were not significantly different from those in the subtidal sediments. The distribution of the resting eggs of cladocerans in the intertidal sediments was affected by the grain-size and moisture content of sediments. The results of the present study suggest that the intertidal sediments as well as the subtidal sediments are a potential egg bank which plays important roles in population dynamics of zooplankton in coastal waters, in particular, recruitment of eggs into plankton.

  • The distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), particularly in the South Atlantic, has traditionally been viewed as primarily determined by the flow of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Krill are viewed as being particles on a conveyor belt that carries them around the Antarctic continent resulting in a single circumpolar population. The evidence to support this viewpoint is largely circumstantial and there is very little direct evidence available of krill being moved by the currents-krill flux. There is also considerable biological and physical evidence which suggests that other factors may play a dominant role in the life history and distribution of krill. This review examines the evidence fur krill flux and also examines evidence that does not accord with this theory. The management implications of assuming krill flux are outlined and some lines for future research are suggested.

  • We investigate a tansient diffusion approximation of queue size distribution in $M^{X}/G^{Y}/c$ system using the diffusion process with elementary return boundary. We choose an appropriate diffusion process which approxiamtes the queue size in the system and derive the transient solution of Kolmogorov forward equation of the diffusion process. We derive an approximation formula for the transient queue size distribution and mean queue size, and then obtain the stationary solution from the transient solution. Accuracy evalution is presented by comparing approximation results for the mean queue size with the exact results or simulation results numerically.

  • The main aim of this paper is to present some results related to asymptotic behavior of distribution functions of random variables of chi-square type $X^2_N={\Sigma}^N_{i=1}\;X^2_i$ with degrees of freedom N, where N is a positive integer-valued random variable independent on all standard normally distributed random variables $X_i$. Two ways for computing the distribution functions of chi-square type random variables with random degrees of freedom are considered. Moreover, some tables concerning considered distribution functions are demonstrated in Appendix.

  • Field studies were conducted over two seasons during the summers of 1997 and 1998 to investigate the effects of different spatial arrangements(random or highly aggregated) of sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and alginate pellet types(bran or polyethylene glycol) on colonization of sclerotia by Trichoderma spp. Treatment with alginate pellets increased the mean percentages of sclerotia colonized by Trichoderma spp. in both years. Distribution patterns of sclerotia affected the mean percentage of sclerotia colonized by Trichoderma spp. in both years, indicating that a highly aggregated distribution of sclerotia was more favorable to colonization by Trichoderma spp. The effects of the different pellet types(bran or PEG) were not siginificant in both years(P>0.05). The application of higher densities(200 pellets per 1 $m^2$) of alginate pellets resulted in higher mean percentages of sclerotia colonized by Trichoderma spp. in 1998(P<0.05), but did not in 1997.

  • Finte element methods are developed for the initial distribution problems which contain the surge potential circuits of high voltage transformer windings. The initial distribution of surge voltages in transformer windings are useful to the work to a practical engineering basis. However, the conventional methods of analyzing them so far are much complicated for practical designs. In this paper, the ability to solve surge potential field problems underlies the development of descreting methods to a lodal capacitive distribution-coefficients for determing the surge voltage relationship among a set of transformer coils. A practical example-the modeling of an antioscillation shield coil winding and hisercap winding is used to illustrate and evaluate these methods.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy-GA method for the allocation and operation of dispersed generator systems(DGs) based on load model in composite distribution systems. Groups of each individual load model consist of residential, industrial, commercial, official and agricultural load. The problem formulation considers an objective to reduce power loss of distribution systems and the constraints such as the number or total capacity of DGs and the deviation of the bus voltage. The main idea of solving fuzzy goal programming is to transform the original objective function and constraints into the equivalent multi-objectives functions with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature for the criterion of power loss minimization, the number or total capacity of DGs and the bus voltage deviation, and then solve the problem using genetic algorithm. The method proposed is applied to IEEE 12 bus and 33 bus test systems to demonstrate its effectiveness. .

  • The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was designed to identify the role of the Taebaek Mountains in the occurrence of heavy snowfall in Yeongdong area with a strong northeast wind on January 20-21, 2008. To this end, in addition to the control simulation with the realistic distribution of the Taebaek Mountains, a sensitivity experiment that removed the orography over the Taebaek Mountains was performed. The control simulation results showed that the resulting wind field and precipitation distribution were similar to what were observed. Results from the sensitivity experiment clearly demonstrates the presence of orographic lifting on the windward slope of the mountains. It is concluded that the altitude of the Taebaek Mountains is the main controlling factor in determining the distribution and amount of precipitation in the Yeongdong area for the case of heavy snowfall in January 2008.
