Relationships Among Owner-Manager Characteristics, E-commerce Adoption and Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia

  • This study examined the relationships among owner-manager characteristics, e-commerce adoption, and performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Although the growth of e-commerce was encouraging in many countries, studies of e-commerce adoption among SMEs in developing countries such as Malaysia are insufficient. Furthermore, studies that investigated individual characteristics and e-commerce adoption are still low in number. This study specifically employed the technology-organization-environmental (TOE) framework to develop its research model. The sample was selected by using a non-probability judgmental sampling technique because the desired population frame was unavailable. A total of 111 owner-managers of SMEs were surveyed using online self-administered questionnaires. Subsequently, the data was analyzed through partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results revealed significant relationships between owner-manager characteristics and e-commerce adoption, as well as between e-commerce adoption and the performance of SMEs. The findings suggested that owner-manager characteristics played an important role in determining e-commerce adoption among SMEs. Moreover, e-commerce adoption was crucial in affecting the performance of SMEs. This paper provided new insights into factors affecting e-commerce adoption and firm performance. It could further benefit the government and SMEs in strategizing e-commerce adoption and development, especially in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) and the post-COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The business strategies of small to medium enterprises (SMEs), especially in relation to the Japanese apparel wholesaler and apparel manufacture markets, have been undertaken by Urakami and his colleagues (Komiya et al., 2009; Urakami et al., 2009; Urakami & Wu 2010). The aim now is to investigate the changing business climate of apparel products in Asia, now that China seems to a major player of apparel products in the Asian region. The production of apparel products from China has resulted in a major shift of the business environment. Such products have now invaded import markets throughout the world economies. Such a drastic change in the business environment impacts the structure of distribution channels in competing economies, affecting both wholesalers and manufactures. This research focuses on the effects this has had on the Japanese distribution channels. The findings derived from our previous research are highlighted, together with several planned hypotheses that require testing, in order to build a clearer understanding of apparel manufacturing in the Asian region.

A study on antecedents and consequents of relationship commitment toward internet sites and between customers in virtual environment (가상환경에서 대고객 및 고객간 관계결속(Relationship Commitment)의 선행변수와 결과변수에 대한 연구)

  • This study investigates "commitment" , which is the crucial variable in the study of relationship marketing, because I pay attention to the importance of relationship marketing toward consumers in virtual environment. This dissertation whose main issue is about virtual environment focuses on "commitment" from two perspectives. One is customers′ relationship commitment toward enterprises or corporations through internet sites and the other is relationship commitment between customers. The main purpose is to verify antecedents and consequents which influence relationship commitment toward internet sites (corporations or enterprises) and between customers. The hypotheses are that (1) share values and relationship benefit from internet sites affect relationship commitment toward internet sites (2) share values and interactions between customers affect relationship commitment between customers (3) interactions with relationship commitments toward internet sites and between customers exist (4) these relationship commitments affect future intentions. The subjects are university students who I think get used to using internet. The results indicate that (1) antecedents of relationship commitment toward internet sites and between customers are significantly influential (2) relationship commitment toward internet sites influences relationship commitment between customers, but the effect of relationship commitment between customers on relationship commitment toward internet sites is not significant (3) relationship commitment between customers influences future intentions, but the effect of relationship commitment toward internet sites on future intentions is not significant.

  • Enterprises requires the logistics information system to reduce logistics costs and ensure clearness of distribution. However, the system is adopted only by large corporations due to diversity of work and the initial cost for construction. In this study We have attempted to develop an information system capable of efficiently. Controlling and managing logistics by investigating division of duties and existing problem. Using small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in the distribution business as a model. For real-time monitoring of logistics information. We have constructed a system using new technologies such as GPS, mobile and wireless communications and made use of web GIS as infrastructure. Developed by the logistics information systems, We will control overall logistics work and reduce logistics costs and processing time as well.

A Study on the Effects of SMVEs Export Modes on Export Amount and Period

  • Purpose - This present aims to analyze the effect of export modes on initial export amount and time to export by selecting export modes among various success strategies and factors. Research design, data, and methodology - It surveyed 980 small and mid-sized venture enterprises across Korea. The export modes and its impact on exports through frequency analysis and cross analysis, and validated through a PPML(regression analysis applied the enterprise growth model) analysis. Results - Five export modes were investigated : direct export, indirect export, transfer from direct export to indirect export, transfer from direct export to indirect export, and parallel export to indirect export. It was found that SMVEs that exported directly from establishment to initial export had the shortest period, and also had the highest export price Conclusions - From a marketing point of view, it took an average of 1.6 years to switch from export directly to indirect export or directly export, and the reason for the export modes conversion was to supplement export specialists and improve export competitiveness. And the export amount and time period that SMVEs establishes and export is a significant factor in export success strategy and there has been few prior study in export modes.

  • The purpose of this study is to descriptively reveal the demographic and business profile and personal-entrepreneurial characteristics in Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi, and secondly to associate these profiles and characters to their business progress. A sample size of 21 respondents was drawn - selected from those who warmly welcomed the interviewers for an open-ended structured questionnaire. SPSS 24 has been employed to descriptively reveal the sample distribution according to demographic factors and business entities and to determine the dominant factors affecting the progress of the business by testing the hypothesis on the association of variables under study using specified statistical analytical tools, such as regression analysis, especially stepwise regression formula, between specified dependent variables and independent variables and /or between all variables. The stepwise regression analysis has enabled the researcher to determine which variables are the most important reflecting the personal characteristics theorized as "locus of control": self-efficacy, needs for achievement, personal traits, and barriers to business progress The analysis reveals that the progress of business does have an association and is dependent on the source of capital and education, needs for achievement and locus of control.

The Impact of Minimum Wage Policy on Employment in Myanmar

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of the minimum wage policy and the employment labor force in Myanmar by exploring firms' actions such as installing supplementary machines to substitute for labor resources and by addressing gender issues in employment. Research design, data, and methodology: This paper applies a fixed-effect estimation method by using the World Bank's enterprise panel data set surveyed in Myanmar. Results: Findings suggest that the minimum wage reduces both full-time and part-time employment, while the first minimum wage policy increases overall female employment. The adverse impacts are more pronounced for female employees of Joint Venture enterprises and enterprises located in the less-populated regions. Investment in capital such as equipment and machinery increase to substitute for labor after the minimum wage policy implementation; as a result, full-time employment slightly decreases. Conclusions: Appropriate measures concerning the minimum wage policy must be prepared by the government and institutions related to the labor union to serve the well-being of employees. Government of Myanmar should fix the minimum wage in a reasonable period based on the fiscal year for both employers and employees to prevent possible issues and losses resulting from the minimum wage being set.

Employee Engagement in State Owned Enterprises. A Literature Review Paper

  • Purpose: This paper provides both quantitative and qualitative literature review on employee engagement in State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) as portrayed in literature and offers more insight into the concept on how it can be optimised. Research design, data and methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. A review and analysis of both theoretical and empirical research and articles which are relevant to employee engagement in SOEs was conducted. Only secondary information gathered through those articles and research was used to analyse and build literature review on employee engagement in SOEs. Results: A literature review of both qualitative and quantitative research on employee engagement in organisations generally and in SOEs particularly was done, and it indicated the positive relationship between employee engagement and organisational performance. From the study, it is evident that employee engagement is not optimal around the world, therefore it is an area which needs more attention. Hence, this study proffered strategies for enhancing employee engagement in SOEs. Conclusions: This study proffers strategies for optimising employee engagement in SOEs. These are brand image, work environment, management and leadership characteristics, training and development opportunities, performance management, work life balance, effective communication and Kahn's three factors of meaningfulness, safety and availability. These strategies are essential in optimising employee engagement as portrayed in the reviewed literature.

  • Purpose - The objective of this paper is to explain how the Chinese distribution market will continue to bring tremendous business opportunities to commercial enterprises given the relatively strong economic fundamentals and substantial government-led measures for boosting domestic demand. Research design, data, and methodology - The study conducted a survey on China's 2011 retail market data. After empirically analyzing the data on retail sales, online retail markets, and franchises, we believe that online retailing in China will maintain its growth momentum. Results - This study shows that 2012 is expected to be a challenging year for the retail sector, as both external and internal pressures are likely to persist. Some of the major challenges facing retailers in China are mentioned below. Conclusions - Retailers in China face several major challenges. First, the uncertain economic outlook is having a considerable impact on China's retail market. Second, China's retailers face an unfair competition environment. Third, they are suffering the impacts of product safety problems.

  • In this paper, we suggest a strategy to implement RFID in the Marine Equipment Distribution Center. Although RFID technology has be applied to the various business areas, due to the immature technological market and other reasons, for the successful RFID implementations, it is necessary for the company to review RFID implementations methodology. The aims of the Marine Equipment Distribution Center is to share storages for the marine equipment enterprises and to gain the max efficiency in the logistics flow. To achieve this goal RFID can be one of the alternatives. This paper suggests major issues that can help to reach the successful implementation of RFID in the distribution center.
