Habitat Use of Cranes in Cheolwon Basin, Korea

  • We investigated the habitat use of cranes, and suggested the proper way to protect and manage the cranes in Cheolwon Basin, which is the most important wintering ground of cranes in Korea. Field surveys were conducted in the wintering seasons from Nov. 1994 to Feb. 1995, and from Nov. 1997 to Feb. 1998. The habitat loss and environmental changes by the road construction and agricultural field rearrangement might have affected the distribution of the cranes. The distribution of cranes seemed to be related with the density of rice grains remained in rice paddies.

Application of corrosion inhibitors to water distribution systems

  • The current study evaluated the disinfection efficiency of free chlorine and chloramine for microorganisms on various pipe materials, such as copper, galvanized steel, carbon steel, and stainless steel. In addition, the effect of internal pipe corrosion and corrosion inhibitors on the bactericidal efficiency was evaluated using a simulated loop. For disinfection with a phosphate corrosion inhibitor, chloramination was found to be more effective than chlorination due to its persistence. Free chlorine disinfection was optimized with a high phosphoric acid concentration, while chloramine disinfection was optimized with a high phosphoric acid or low polyphosphate concentration. In simulated copper and galvanized steel loop tests, chloramination with phosphoric acid was demonstrated to be more effective.

  • We estimated the influence of environmental factors on zooplankton communities at 25 reservoirs during winter (December 2010 to January 2011). Among zooplankton groups, Cyclops vicinus is more dominant during winter, and this is positively related to withered vegetation area and dissolved oxygen level. Therefore, the presence of withered vegetation might be considered as an important factor to determine C. vicinus distribution during winter. We considered that withered vegetation might be utilized as a habitat for C. vicinus, as well as provide an attachment substrate for periphytic algae. Abundance of periphytic algae can lead to high concentration of dissolved oxygen. Although copepods prefer high water temperatures for increasing their population growth, if Cyclops can overcome low temperature stress that leads to disruption of population, their population growth initiation in the next growing season (i.e. next spring) is possibly propelled by the winter population.

  • Recently, a multi facility, multi product and multi period industrial problem has been widely investigated in Supply Chain Management (SCM). One of the key issues in the current SCM research area involved reducing both production and distribution costs. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimum quantity of production and transportation with minimum cost in the supply chain network. We have presented a mathematical model that deals with real world factors and constructs. Considering the complexity of solving such model, we have applied the genetic algorithm approach for solving this model computational experiments using a commercial genetic algorithm based optimizer. The results show that the real size problems we encountered can be solved In reasonable time

First Report of Gymnosporangium globosum Causing American Hawthorn Rust in Korea

  • Field surveys and specimen collections of the rust fungal pathogen Gymnosporangium were carried out for 15 years from 1985 through 1999 in various locations of Korea. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations of morphological characteristics of aecia from the collected specimens revealed that Gymnosporangium globosum is the causal agent of American hawthorn rust disease on Crataegus pinnatifida and C. pinnatifida varmajor. The host plants are new for this rust fungus. G. globosum was found only in Gyeonggi and Chungbuk provinces, indicating that its distribution in Korea is limited. This is a first full description on morphological characters of aecia of G. globosum in Korea.

Magneto-thermo-elastic analysis of a functionally graded conical shell

  • In this paper, magneto-thermo-elastic problem of a thick truncated conical shell immersed in a uniform magnetic field and subjected to internal pressure is investigated. Material properties of the shell including the elastic modulus, magnetic permeability, coefficients of thermal expansion and conduction are assumed to be isotropic and graded through the thickness obeying the simple power law distribution, while the poison's ratio is assumed to be constant. The temperature distribution is assumed to be a function of the thickness direction. Governing equations of the truncated conical shell are derived in terms of components of displacement and thermal fields and discretised with the help of differential quadrature (DQ) method. Results are obtained for different values of power law index of material properties and effects of thermal load on displacement, stress, temperature and magnetic fields are studied. Results of the present method are compared with those of the finite element method.

A methodology for spatial distribution of grain and voids in self compacting concrete using digital image processing methods

  • Digital image processing algorithms for the analysis and characterization of grains and voids in cemented materials were developed using toolbox functions of a mathematical software package. Utilization of grayscale, color and watershed segmentation algorithms and their performances were demonstrated on artificially prepared self-compacting concrete (SCC) samples. It has been found that color segmentation was more advantageous over the gray scale segmentation for the detection of voids whereas the latter method provided satisfying results for the aggregate grains due to the sharp contrast between their colors and the cohesive matrix. The watershed segmentation method, on the other hand, appeared to be very efficient while separating touching objects in digital images.

  • Steady-state operation of a fusion power plant requires external current drive to minimize the power requirements, and a high fraction of bootstrap current is required. One of the external sources for current drive is lower hybrid current drive, which has been widely applied in many tokamaks. Here, using lower hybrid simulation code, we calculate electron distribution function, electron currents and phase velocity changes for two options of demonstration reactor at the launched lower hybrid wave frequency 5 GHz. Two plasma scenarios pertaining to two different demonstration reactor options, known as pulsed (Option 1) and steady-state (Option 2) models, have been analyzed. We perceive that electron currents have major peaks near the edge of plasma for both options but with higher efficiency for Option 1, although we have access to wider, more peripheral regions for Option 2. Regarding the electron distribution function, major perturbations are at positive velocities for both options for flux surface 16 and at negative velocities for both options for flux surface 64.

  • Paranebalia longipes (Willemoes-Suhm, 1875) is cosmopolitan and has been usually found in the algal and sponge debris on the sandy mud substrates. This species can be clearly distinguished from other species of Paranebalia by the presence of serration on posterior margin of pleopods, the number of articles on antennule and antenna, and number of teeth on flange of antennule fourth article. The genus Paranebalia is new to Korea. In this paper, we provide detail descriptions of the diagnostic characteristics and illustrations of the P. longipes. Additionally, type locality and world distribution of the genus Paranebalia are provided.

Effects of Pad Number on the Static Performances of Large Tilting Pad Journal Bearings (패드 수의 변화가 대형 틸팅패드 저어널 베어링의 정특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, thermohydrodynamic characteristics of large tilting pad journal bearings which have $3\~8$ tilting pads were numerically analyzed. The turbulent lubrication equation and the energy equation were solved. The regime of operation of this bearing is laminar, turbulent and transitional. Also viscosity of working fluid was considered as function of only temperature and inlet pressure build-up was considered. Numerical results for a large tilting pad journal bearing showed pressure distribution, temperature distribution, eccentricity ratio, and friction torque. The effects of pad number on the static performances of a large tilting pad journal bearing are discussed.
