In order to understand the temporal variations and species composition of tintinnids, at two stations of the Korea Strait, this study was carried out from January to December 2007 (n=17). Fifty-one species from 22 genera were encountered: 27 neritic species (9 genera) and 24 oceanic species (14 genera). The species composition was different between two stations, and neritic species frequently appeared at St. 1, while oceanic species more frequently appeared at St. 2. According to the frequency in appearance of species, the most dominant species were neritic species such as Stenosemella nivalis and S. pacifica, that appeared in all seasons. Also, Acanthostomella norvegica, Amphorellopsis acuta, Epilpocyloides ralumensis, Protorhabdonella curta and other many oceanic species appeared intensively during the low salinity (${\leqq}33\;psu$) and high water temperature (${\geqq}24^{\circ}C$) period (July~October). The abundance of tintinnids ranged from 0 to 1,845 cells $L^{-1}$. It was higher in the seasons (summer and autumn) of low salinity and high water temperature than in other seasons. The abundance was relatively higher at St. 1 than at St. 2. On the basis of correlation and multiple regression analyses, the tintinnid abundance was not correlated with chi-a, but significantly correlated with water temperature and salinity, suggesting to be the primary abiotic factors influencing the abundance. This study suggests that the complex hydrographic conditions of the study area might influence the temporal distribution and species composition of tintinnids.

Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection data from the Southern Ulleung Basin reveals that Plio-Quaternary section in the area consists of nine stacked sedimentary units separated by erosional unconformities. On the southern slope, these sedimentary units are acoustically characterized by chaotic seismic facies without distinct internal reflections, interpreted as debris-flow bodies. Toward the basin floor, the sedimentary units are defined by well-stratified facies with good continuity and strong amplitude, interpreted as turbidite/hemipelagic sediments. The seismic facies distribution suggests that deposition of Plio-Quaternary section in the area was controlled mainly by tectonic movement and sea-level fluctuations. During the Pliocene, sedimentation was mainly controlled by tectonic movements related to the back-arc closure of the East Sea. The back-arc closure that began in the Miocene caused compressional deformation along the southern margin of the Ulleung Basin, resulting in regional uplift which continued until the Pliocene. Large amounts of sediments, eroded from the uplifted crustal blocks, were supplied to the basin, depositing Unit 1 which consists of debris-flow deposits. During the Quaternary, sea-level fluctuations resulted in stacked sedimentary units (2-9) consisting of debris-flow deposits, formed during sea-level fall and lowstands, and thin hemipelagic/turbidite sediments, deposited during sea-level rise and highstands.

In order to understand biogeochemical cycles of organic carbon in the permeable intertidal sandy sediments of the Nakdong estuary, we estimated the organic carbon production and consumption rates both in situ and in the laboratory. The Chl-a content of the sediment and the nutrient concentrations in below surface pore water in the sandy sediment were lower than in the muddy sediment. The sediment oxygen consumption rates were relatively high, especially when compared with rates reported from other coastal muddy sediments with higher organic carbon contents. This implied that both the organic carbon degradation and material transport in the sandy sediment were enhanced by advection-related process. The simple mass balance estimation of organic carbon fluxes showed that the major sources of carbon in the sediment would originate from benthic microalgae and detrital organic carbon derived from salt marsh. The daily natural biocatalzed filtration, extrapolated from filtration rates and the total area of the Nakdong estuary, was one order higher than the maximum capability of sewage plants in Busan metropolitan city. This implies that the sandy sediment contributes greatly to biogeochemical purification in the area, and is important for the re-distribution of materials in the coastal environment.

Membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) has been used to accurately quantify dissolved gases in liquid samples. In this study, the MIMS system was applied to measure dissolved methane in seawater and sediment porewater. To evaluate the accuracy of the measurement, liquid samples saturated with different methane partial pressure were prepared and the methane concentrations were quantified with the MIMS system. The measured values correspond well with the expected values calculated from solubility constants. The standard error of the measurements were $0.13{\sim}0.9%$ of the mean values. The distribution of dissolved methane concentration in seawater of the South Sea of Korea revealed that the physical parameters primarily control the methane concentration in sea water. The MIMS system was effective to resolve the small dissolved methane difference among water masses. The probe type inlet in MIMS system was proven to be effective to measure porewater methane concentration.
If the plant genetic resources and information-sharing systems held by arboretums worldwide are effectively utilized, it is believed that a conservation system for plant diversity in the currently inaccessible North Korean region could be established. This study was conducted to review the scientific names of plants native to North Korea but not to South Korea and to assess the status of genetic resources held in domestic and international arboretums. To compile a list and status of North Korean plant's genetic resources, updated checklists of vascular plants in Korean Peninsula and online plant information databases were consulted to compile synonym, distribution range, and other related information. A total of 486 taxa (449 species, 13 subspecies, 21 varieties, 1 forma and 2 hybrids) from 236 genera and 64 families, representing 12.34% of the total native flora of the Korean Peninsular were presented in the North Korea plant list, and the presence of rare, endemic and northern lineage species was confirmed. It was found that 384 taxa from 190 genera, 53 families of North Korean plants are held as genetic resources in 333 arboretums and plant research institutions across 46 countries and 5 continents worldwide. This study is expected to contribute to the construction and application of a species list for plants native to the Korean Peninsula.
Proton therapy is known for its superior treatment method due to Bragg peak. To enhance the therapeutic effects of protons, research has been conducted on distributing gold nanoparticles within tumors to increase the absorbed dose. While previous studies focused on handling gold nanoparticles at micrometer and nonometer scale, this study proposes a method to computationally estimate the effect of gold nanoparticles at the millimeter scale. The Geant4 toolkit was applied to computational modeling. Assuming a uniform distribution of water, similar to the human body, and gold nanoparticles, the concentration of gold nanoparticles was adjusted using density ratios. When the density ratio was 5%, the gain in absorbed energy due to gold nanoparticles was nearly twice that of the pure water phantom at the Bragg peak. As the density ratio increased, the gain in absorbed energy linearly increased. When gold nanoparticles were distributed in only one voxel at the Bragg peak, the energy of the protons affected only the neighboring voxels. However, in cases where gold nanoparticles were distributed over a wide area, the volume showing 95% of the maximum absorbed energy (9.46 keV) for the pure water phantom (9.95 keV) exhibited an improvement in absorbed energy over a region 16 times larger, and this region increased as the density ratio increased. Further research is needed to quantify the relationship between the density ratio of gold nanoparticles and the relative biological effect (RBE) in the millimeter scale.
The purpose of this study is to derive passenger trends and change rates for each airline and identify directionality and synchronization phenomenon. Data by each airlines was collected from the National Statistics Forum of Statistics Korea, and we used a total of 156 monthly data from January 2011 to December 2023. In this study, the rate of change was calculated for domestic Full Service Carriers (Korean Air, Asiana Airlines) and Low Cost Carriers (Jeju Air, Jin Air, T'way, foreign airlines). As a result of the analysis, the correlation was found to be high for KOREA in that order: Asiana, Korean Air, Jeju Air, T'way, Jin Air, foreign airlines. The rate of increase was highest in that order: T'way, Jin Air, Jeju Air, foreign airlines, Asiana, Korean Air. In the Scatter analysis, Asiana and Korean Air showed a very strong synchronization with KOREA. In addition, Jeju Air, T'way, Jin Air and foreign airlines also showed the same direction toward KOREA to a certain degree. In the Box-Box Plot analysis, it was determined that each airline experienced a number of unusual sudden fluctuations due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Passengers have a wider range of choices due to the emergence of Low Cost Carriers, and as a result, expectations for airline service are increasing. Airlines will need to make appropriate environmental improvements to satisfy these needs for corporate development.
Composition analysis and lead isotope ratio analysis were conducted to determine the coloring machanism on lead glaze used in Gyeongbokgung Palace and the provenance of the lead used as a flux. 31 blue tiles were classified into green, blue, and yellow. The chemical analysis of lead glazes on the blue tiles revealed that Pb, Si, and Cu were the main components, and trace amounts of Fe, Ca, Mg, and Al were detected. The Cu content was high in blue lead glaze, while Cu was not detected in yellow or brown lead glaze which instead had high Fe content. Therefore, it was found that lead was used as a flux and copper oxide as a coloring agent in the production of lead glaze. In addition, the lead isotope ratios of the lead glaze used in the blue tiles of Gyeongbokgung palace were plotted in zone 3 on the distribution map of lead isotope ratios on the Korean Peninsula, which includes Chungcheong-do and Jeolla-do. It is presumed that the flux for the lead glaze was sourced from galena found in these regions. The lead isotope ratios of the green glaze from the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla period were mostly located outside the Korean Peninsula, showing that the provenance of lead had changed. In particular, the lead isotope ratios of the green glaze from the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla period suggest exchange with neighboring countries. Also the lead isotope ratios of the green glazes from the same temple are different, so it is believed that they were made at different times or in different workshops.
Understanding the status of surface cover in riparian zones is essential for river management and flood disaster prevention. Traditional survey methods rely on expert interpretation of vegetation through vegetation mapping or indices. However, these methods are limited by their ability to accurately reflect dynamically changing river environments. Against this backdrop, this study utilized satellite imagery to apply the Random Forest method to assess the distribution of vegetation in rivers over multiple years, focusing on the Naeseong Stream as a case study. Remote sensing data from Sentinel-2 imagery were combined with ground truth data from the Naeseong Stream surface cover in 2016. The Random Forest machine learning algorithm was used to extract and train 1,000 samples per surface cover from ten predetermined sampling areas, followed by validation. A sensitivity analysis, annual surface cover analysis, and accuracy assessment were conducted to evaluate their applicability. The results showed an accuracy of 85.1% based on the validation data. Sensitivity analysis indicated the highest efficiency in 30 trees, 800 samples, and the downstream river section. Surface cover analysis accurately reflects the actual river environment. The accuracy analysis identified 14.9% boundary and internal errors, with high accuracy observed in six categories, excluding scattered and herbaceous vegetation. Although this study focused on a single river, applying the surface cover classification method to multiple rivers is necessary to obtain more accurate and comprehensive data.
In particular, as the current educational institutions are becoming more competitive, universities need to make efforts to survive the fierce competition by improving their service qualities. In this situation, this study was conducted to confirm the effect of international students' evaluation of university service quality on university loyalty through university satisfaction and service engagements, And several implications can be suggested as follows. First, the dimensions of university service quality were identified as important factors that had a great influence on the university satisfaction of international students. Among the service quality dimensions, support services related to international students were found to be the most important variable in university satisfaction. The school's efforts to solve the inconvenience of international students and the grievances of students who feel difficulties that their own students do not feel are considered a very important factor in the satisfaction of international students. Second, it was found that international students' class engagement or friendship engagement can be increased through satisfaction with the school, and eventually, the increased engagements affect university loyalty. In particular, it has been verified that for international students, the loyalty of the school can be increased by establishing friendships with students from various countries and participating in various school programs. Finally, according to the purposes of studying abroad, the difference was confirmed between the groups studying for academic development and better employment and the group employed for overseas experience and immigration.
