  • This study aimed at investigating correlation of nutrients intake and serum lipids of industrial workers. 226 for adult aged 20yr~59yr (average age 35.9yr) were selected as subjects during 6 months, from June to December, 1997. Nutrients intake was investigated by questionnaire, 24-hour recall method. Antropometric assessments, serum lipids and blood pressure of the subjects were investigated. The results as follows ; In total subjects, calories, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin $B_1$, and vitamin $B_2$ were below Korean RDA(recommended dietary allowances) and protein, iron, vitamin C, niacin and phosphorus were above Korean RDA. Distribution of BMI groups were underweight groups(7.9%), normalweight groups(63.3%) and overweight groups(28.8%). In BMI groups, intakes of calories, carbohydrates, protein, fats, iron, niacin and potassium of overweight groups were higher than those of other groups, significantly(P<0.001). Intakes of calcium of underweight groups were lower than those of other groups, significantly(P<0.05). BMI increased with age. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, apo(b) and atherogenic index of overweight groups were higher than those of other groups, significantly(P<0.001). Calories, carbohydrates, protein, fats, iron, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, niacin, natrium and potassium were positively correlated with BMI, significantly(P<0.001). Calcium and vitamin C were positively correlated with BMI, significantly(P<0.01). vitamin A and phosphorus were positively correlated with BMI, significantly(P<0.05). Total lipid, total-chol., triglyceride, apo(b) and atherogenic index were positively correlated with BMI, significantly(P<0.001). HDL-chol. were negatively correlated with BMI, significantly(P<0.001). Above results, the more BMI and age increased, the worse patterns of serum lipid, so that increased atherogenic index that increased risk of atherosclerosis and degenerative chronic disease connected with serum lipid. After classified by BMI, age and lipid pattern, it will be managed individually for health management of industrial workers. Development and application of efficient program will be urgent for harmonious nutrition counseling and guidance.

  • Community structure refers to the number of species in a community and the pattern of distribution of individuals among those species. The purpose of this paper was to describe a statistical analysis for detecting a ecological biodiversity which is valid even though the assumption at the different sampling points is not violated spatial randomness of species. Counts and cover were determined from 10 ($20\;m{\times}20\;m$) plots in five sites of the Oncheon River which is located in Busan, Korea. Total 95 taxa (85 species, 9 varieties, and one form) were identified and measured in edge sides of this river. These were a total of present in the five sites. Overall across the fragments, mean number of species per plot differed significantly among the five sites (F=7.75, p<0.01). Shannon-Wiener functions differed significantly among plots (F=4.12, p<0.05), with the St. 1 having significantly higher value (2.380) than the others (2.206 for St. 2, 2.116 for St. 3, 2.069 for St. 4, and 0.637 for St. 5). The richness indices, R1 decreased from the upper stream of the Oncheon River to the lower stream. We used a novel way of representing community structure to show that abundance within closely related pairs of co-occurring species in the Oncheon River. The differences between the distributions for of congeners and pairs of non-congeners showed at the largest difference of the cumulative fractions of the data sets (x=0.85).

  • To examine the fluctuations of aerosol number concentration with different size in the boundary layer of marine area during summer season, aerosol particles were assayed in the Ieodo Ocean Research Station, which is located 419 km southwest of Marado, the southernmost island of Korea, from 24 June to 4 July, 2008. The Laser Particle Counter (LPC) was used to measure the size of aerosol particles and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and sounding data were used to analyze the synoptic condition. The distribution of aerosol number concentration had a large variation from bigger particles more than 3 ${\mu}m$ in diameter to smaller particles more than 1 ${\mu}m$ in diameter with wind direction during precipitation. The aerosol number concentration decreased with increasing temperature. An increase (decrease) of small size of aerosol (0.3${\sim}$0.5 ${\mu}m$ in diameter) number concentration was induced by convergence (divergence) of the wind fields. The aerosol number concentration of bigger size more than 3 ${\mu}m$ in diameter after precipitation was removed as much as 89${\sim}$94% compared with aerosol number concentration before precipitation. It is considered that the larger aerosol particles would be more efficient for scavenging at marine boundary layer. In addition, the aerosol number concentration with divergence and convergence could be related with the occurrence and mechanism of aerosol in marine boundary layer.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking on the pharmacokinetics of theophylline in Koreans, doses of 4.5 to 5.0 mg/kg of theophylline, as injectable aminophylline, were administered to 12 normal young volunteers (male, 22 to 35 yrs;mean, 26 yrs) through intravenous infusion over 30 minutes, and pharmacokinetics of theophylline were tested. Among subjects, six were nonsmokers and the other were smokers (range 1 to 2 packs/day). Also the correlations between plasma and saliva theophylline concentrations were investigated by determining the concentrations of theophylline in saliva simultaneously at each plasma sampling time. The total body clearances of theophylline in smokers (Mean${\pm}$SD, 0.0578${\pm}$0.0092 L/hr/kg)were appreciably higher than thoxe of nonsmokers (Mean${\pm}$SD, 0.0359${\pm}$0.0063 L/hr/kg), and the half-lives of theophylline in smokers averaged 5.36${\pm}$1.22hr, and significantly shorter than those of nonsmokers which averaged 9.14${\pm}$1.73hrs(p<0.005). But the apparent volumes of distribution of theophylline did not show any significant difference between smokers (Mean${\pm}$SD,0.44 ${\pm}$0.05L/kg) and nonsmokers (Mean${\pm}$SD, 0.46${\pm}$0.05L/kg). The average concentration ratios in saliva and plasma were 0.61 in smokers and 0.56 in nonsmokers after 2 hrs following drug administrations, and the smoker group had a slightly higher value of ratio(S/P) than the nonsmoker group (p<0.05). The correlations between saliva and plasma theophylline concentration in smokers were r=0.852(p<0.0005) within 2 hr and r=0.985(p<0.0005) after 2 hrs and also those of nonsmokers were r=0.729(p<0.0005) within 2 hrs and r=0.957(p<0.0005) after 2 hrs starting the infusion. From the results, it was found that smoking cigarettes had significantly increased the clearance of theophylline and that the relationships between saliva and plasma theophylline concentrations in all subjects were better after 2 hrs than within 2 hrs starting the infusion of aminophlline.

  • To evaluate disposition characteristics of procainamide and its active metabolite, N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA), cross-over study for procainamide and NAPA was performed in 5 male adult dogs. After single administration of 10 mg/kg procainamide over 15 minutes, the range of measured plasma NAPA concentrations during experimental period were 0.03 to 0.124 ug/ml and early 'dip' phenomenon was distinct on NAPA concentration to time curve in all 5 dogs. Volume of distribution (Vss) and central compartment volume (Vc) of procainamide were $1.20{\pm}0.27\;L/kg$ of body weight and $0.36{\pm}0.08\;L/kg$, respectively. Vss and Vc of NAPA were $1.21{\pm}0.21\;L/kg$ and $0.26{\pm}0.07\;L/kg$, respectively. Intercompartmental clearance (Clint) of procainamide was 3.44 L/kg/hr and that of NAPA was 1.62 L/kg/hr. Total body clearance (Cl) of procainamide and NAPA were $0.47{\pm}0.08$ and $0.35{\pm}0.08\;L/kg/hr$. The half-life $(t_{1/2{\beta}})$ of procainamide and NAPA were 2.85 hrs and 2.77 hrs, respectively. Metabolic clearance (Clm)of procainamide by N-acetylation was $18.24{\pm}6.22\;ml/kg/hr$, which corresponded to 3.9% of total procainamide clearance.

  • This study was focused on the distribution of different facial types of the Class II division I malocclusion groups and skeletal characteristics of the each group and those that anteropsterior relationship of the maxilla and mandible calculated from the analysis of ANB angle and Wits appraisal was quite different from each other, as well. Cephalometric headplates of 140 persons of Class II division 1 malocclusion whose mean age was 11.2 years and 69 persons of normal occlusion whose mean age was 12.2 years were utilize as materials. Measurements were recorded, tabulated and statistically analyzed employing the tracings of the lateral cephalograms, then Class II division 1 malocclusion group was divided into 9 Types according to the angle of SNA and SNB for the anteroposterior relationship of the maxilla and mandible, another 9 Types according to the FH-NPog and SN-MP for the horisontal and vertical relationship, and the other 9 Types according to the ANB and Wits appraisal for intermaxillary relationship as well, with which was based on $Mean{\pm}$ 1SD of those of normal occlusion. The result allowed the following conclusion: 1. $37.1\%$ of population demonstrated maxilla within nounal range and retrognathic mandible to the cranial base, $30\%$ for both maxilla and mandible within normal range, $20\%$ for retrognathic maxilla and mandible and $12.9\%$ of the rest were ananged in Class II division 1 maloccusion groups. 2. Retrognathic mandible and hyperdivergent face accounted for $30.7\%$, mesognathic mandible and neutrodivergent face for $29.3\%$, mesognathic mandible and hyperdivergent face for $16.4\%$, retrognathic mandible and neutrodivergent face for $13.6\%$, mesognathic mandible and hypodivergent face for $10\%$ of population were computed in Class II division 1 malocclusion groups. 3. It was suggested that skeletal Class II malocclusion might be due to anomaly in size and shape of cranial base, underdevelopment of mandible, retropositioning of mandible, underdevelopment of posterior face against anterior face, or any combination of these factors. 4. Population with underdevelopment and / or retropositioning of the mandible showed hyperdivergent tendency of facia profile. 5. The ANB angle and Wits appraisal did not coincide the severity of anteroposterior dysplasia in $35.7\%$ of Class II division 1 malocclusion group each other, and this inconsistency was suggested to be related with mandibular rotation, inclination of cranial base, and anteroposterior position of the maxilla.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a chart that can easily estimate the seismic failure probability of small and medium sized earthfill dams with little geotechnical information. By considering the existing method and procedure for estimating the seismic failure probability of a dam, the zero seismic failure probability curve, on which the seismic probability is zero regardless of the geotechnical properties of the dam, was determined in the form of hyperbola in the dam height and freeboard ratio plane. It was confirmed that the dam height-freeboard ratio distribution pattern of the Korean small and medium sized dams was shaped like a hyperbola like the zero seismic failure probability curve. Therefore, a estimation chart was constructed in which a number of seismic failure probability contours are represented by a number of hyperbolas at regular intervals in the dam height-freeboard ratio plane. The proposed chart was applied to the calculation of the seismic failure probability of two small and midium sized dams with relatively well-managed geotechnical properties and the validity of the chart was confirmed by comparison with the results obtained by the existing procedures and methods. In the future, the proposed chart is expected to be useful in considering investment priorities for maintenance and reinforcement of small and medium sized dams in preparation for earthquakes.

  • Large metropolitan areas in the US are distinguished by highly fragmented fiscally independent suburban municipalities and special districts. The suburban fragmentation implies the congregation of similar socio-economic groups escaped from central cities and the disparity of geographical resources among local government jurisdictions. This study examines St.Louis County suburbs as a case study for the implictions of suburban governmental fragmentation and the fiscal disparities across local governmental boundaries by analyzing their relationship with public service provision using police and public school services as examples. The distribution of fiscal resources across political boundaries, the processes which created them, and public service inequalities reproduced from the disparity of fiscal resources reveal the causes and consequences of suburban governmental fragmentation. The central part of suburban fragmentation is the segregation of public goods consumption reproduced from the disparity of local fiscal resources, and it acts as a basic geographical segregating force in the suburban spatial organization.

  • This study shows possibility of active fault, throughout analyzing distributional features of tectonic and fluvial geomorphology and mineral composition of fault fracture clay, at Jinbu fault-line system in Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon Province. Fault-line valley was formed remarkably in the upper reaches of Odae River and upper reaches of Yeongok River according along Jinbu fault-line. Landforms show rectilineal distribution at right shore slopes of Odae River in Ganpyeong-ri, southern zone of Jinbu fault-line system, related to the tectonic processes, such as triangular facet, kernbut, kerncol and alluvial fan. Fault fracture clay zones were developed at 5 outcrops($jbf1{\sim}5$), located in kerncol. Particularly, jbf1 fault outcrop, developed at granite saprolite, has obvious fault plane and fault clay composed of illite and laumontite. The Jinbu Fault-line along jbf4-2-3-5 may be formed by regional compressive stress, and jbf1 fault may be suggested a tributary fault of the Jinbu fault-line formed before the late Pleistocene. The vertical displacement of the east and west blocks of the Jinbu Fault-line is estimated in $0.024{\sim}0.027m/ka$.
