Optimal operation of a combined sewer network with distributed storage facilities aims to use the whole retention capacity of all reservoirs efficiently before overflows take place somewhere in the considered network system. An efficient real-time network control (RTNC) strategy has been emerging as an attractive approach for reducing substantially the overflows from a sewer network compared to the conventional fixed or manually adjusted gate setting method, but the related concrete framework for RTC development has not been throughly introduced so far. The main goal of this study is to give a detailed description of the RTNC systems via reviewing several guidelines published abroad, and finally to suggest methods for the proper application of RTNC on distributed storage facilities. Especially, this study is focused on emphasizing the importance of hierarchical structure of RTNC system that consists of three control layers (management, global control and local control). Further, with regard to the global control layer which is responsible for the central overall network control, the wide-ranging details of two components (adaption and optimization layers) are also presented. This study can provide the valuable basis for the RTNC implementation in the particular sewer network with distributed multiple storage facilities.

Most grid-based distributed hydrologic models are complex in terms of data requirements, parameter estimation and computational demand. To address these issues, a simple grid-based hydrologic model is developed in a geographic information system (GIS) environment using storage-release concept. The model is named GIS Storage Release Model (GIS-StoRM). The storage-release concept uses the travel time within each cell to compute howmuch water is stored or released to the watershed outlet at each time step. The travel time within each cell is computed by combining the kinematic wave equation with Manning's equation. The input to GIS-StoRM includes geospatial datasets such as radar rainfall data (NEXRAD), land use and digital elevation model (DEM). The structural framework for GIS-StoRM is developed by exploiting geographic features in GIS as hydrologic modeling objects, which store and process geospatial and temporal information for hydrologic modeling. Hydrologic modeling objects developed in this study handle time series, raster and vector data within GIS to: (i) exchange input-output between modeling objects, (ii) extract parameters from GIS data; and (iii) simulate hydrologic processes. Conceptual and structural framework of GIS StoRM including its application to Pleasant Creek watershed in Indiana will be presented.
According to the report of hydrologic modeling study, from a quantitative point of view, a lumped model is more efficient than a distributed model. A distributed model has to simplify geospatial characteristics for the shake of restricted application on computer calculation and field observation. In this reason, a distributed model can not help having some errors of water quantity modelling. However, considering a distribution of rainfall-runoff reflected spatial characteristics, a distributed model is more efficient to simulate a flow of surface water, The purpose of this study is modeling of spatial rainfall-runoff of surface water using grid based distributed model, which is consisted of storage function model and essential basin-channel parameters( slope, flow direction & accumulation), and that procedure is able to be executed at a personal computer. The prototype of this model is developed in Heongseong Multipunose Dam basin and adapted in Hapchon Multipurpose Dam basin, which is larger than the former about five times. The efficiency coefficients in result of two dam basin simulations are more than about 0.9, but ones at the upstream water level gauge station meet with bad result owing to overestimated rating curves in high water level. As a result of this study, it is easily implemented that spatially distributed rainfall-runoff model using GIS, and geophysical characteristics of the catchment, hereafter it is anticipated that this model is easily able to apply rainfall data by real time.

A hydrological drought index, MSWSI (Modified Surface Water Supply Index) was suggested based on SWSI (Surface Water Supply Index). With the available data of spatially distributed observation station of precipitation, dam storage, stream water level and natural groundwater level, South Korea was divided into 32 regions. This was conducted to represent the calculated index as a spatially distributed information. Monthly MSWSI was evaluated for the period of 1974 and 2001. It is necessary to compare this result with PDSI (Palmer Drought Severity Index) and SPI (Standard Precipitation Index), and check the applicability of the suggested index in our hydrological drought situation.

To investigate the quality changes during frozen storage, top shell, Omphalius pfeifferi capenteri, was stored at -18$^{\circ}C$, -$25^{\circ}C$ and -3$0^{\circ}C$ immediately after shelling and water holding capacity, protein composition and histological features were examined with the lapsed period of the storage. During the storage period, amount of free drip was increased with higher frozen temperature and longer frozen period, but with the longer storage period, the lower water holding capacity was observed. The extractability and composition of muscle protein, sarcoplasmic protein and stroma protein were rather stable regardless of frozen temperature and frozen storage period. However, the extractability of myofibrillar protein was decreased with higher frozen temperature and longer frozen storage period. On the changes of muscle tissue structure, following points were observed. 1) In the muscle tissue structure of fresh sample, fine muscle fiber was closely distributed all over the tissue regardless of cross and longitudinal section. 2) In tissue structure under frozen state, it was observed that ice crystals apparently grew with the higher storage temperature. Empty spaces between muscle bundles which wee formed by aggregations of muscle fiber were observed after 3 months storage at -18$^{\circ}C$ . 3) Tissue structure in thawed state was restored satisfactorily after 1 month storage regardless of storage temperature. After 3 months storage at -3$0^{\circ}C$, muscle tissue was well restored, but at -18$^{\circ}C$, empty spaces were apparent due to incomplete restoration.
For reliable water quality simulation by semi distributed model, accurate daily runoff simulation should have preceded. In this study, newly developed channel routing method which is nonlinear storage method is combination of Muskingum routing method and variable storage routing method and temporally weighted average curve number method were applied for effect analysis of water quality simulation. Developed modules, which are added in SWAT models and simulation, were conducted for the Chungju dam watershed. The simulation result by each module applied effect. As a result of analysis contribute water quality modeling, nonlinear storage method is more effective than temporally weighted average curve number method. Nutrient loading discharge was affected by development of runoff delaying from improvement of channel routing, because of characteristics of nonpoint source pollution.
The heat transfer characteristics of ice storage system of falling film type using sprial coil is investigated. The experimental facilities consisted of a water tank, spiral coils located above the tank, an upper water distributor, and a circulating water pump. Water is distributed uniformally over the spiral coils and it forms falling thin films. In the process of freezing, ice is formed on outside of the spiral coils through recirculation of tank water. In the process of melting, ice is melted with return water from the heat load, while the water is chilled again and drops into the tank. The results of falling film type of ice thermal storage system are as follows. The highly efficient shower flowrates for icing is near $3{\ell}/min$. Icing rates on spiral coils is rosed while brine flowrates is increased. Lower brine temperature is not only increased freezing rates but. also become higher total icing weight and overall heat transfer coefficient. Smaller shower flowrates is obtained lower water temperature on outlet for a long time. The amounts of quantity can be detected more accurately by measuring storage tank weight.
The optimal rechlorination in water distribution systems was investigated by incorporating optimization techniques into a numerical water quality model. For a hypothetical system that consists of 10 junctions including a storage tank and 12 links, the bulk ($k_b$) and pipe-wall ($k_w$) decay-rate constants of chlorine residual are assumed to be 2.0 1/day and 1.5 m/day, respectively. It was also assumed that the lower and upper limits of chlorine residual in the network are 0.2 mg/L and 0.6 mg/L. When the chlorine source is only the storage tank (without rechlorination), the high levels of chlorine residual appear near the storage tank to maintain the chlorine residuals above the lower limit over the junctions. On the other hand, the chlorine residuals in the network are distribute within the desirable range (0.2 - 0.6 mg/L) after the optimal rechlorination through five injection sites including the storage tank. In case of a real water distribution system that comprises 28 junctions including a clear well and 27 links, the bulk and pipe-wall decay-rate constants are 0.3 1/day and 0.2 m/day, respectively. Before rechlorination, the required chlorine residual at the clearwell is 5.1 mg/L to keep the chlorine residuals above the minimum level (0.6 mg/L) over the junctions. By the optimal rechlorination at five injection sites, the chlorine residuals are distributed within a desirable range of 0.6 mg/L through 2.0 mg/L, which can avoid the excess of chlorine residuals near the clear well. Consequently, total chlirine doses are decreased by 81% in the hypothetical distribution network and 69 % in the real distribution network for satisfying the minimum chlorine residuals.
With the availability of multi-scale hydrologic data in public domain depending on DEM size, there is a need for a modeling framework that is capable of using these data to simulate hydrologic processes at multiple scales for different topographic and climate conditions for distributed hydrologic model. To address this need, an object-oriented approach, called Geographic and Hydrologic Information System Modeling Objects (GHISMO), is developed. Main hydrologic approaches in GHISMO are storage-release for direct runoff and SCS curve number method for infiltration part. This paper presents conceptual and structural framework of storage-release concept including its application to two watersheds will be presented.
Climate Change affects the hydrological cycle in agricultural watersheds through rising air temperature and changing rainfall patterns. Agricultural watersheds in Korea are characterized by extensive paddy fields and intensive water use, a resource that is under stress from the changing climate. This study analyzed the effects of climate change on river flows for Geum Cheon and Eun-San Choen watershed using STREAM, a semi-distributed watershed model. In order to evaluate the performance and improve the reliability of the model, calibration and validation of the model was done for one flow observation point and three reservoir water storage ratio points. Climate change scenarios were based on RCP data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and bias corrections were done using the Quantile Mapping method to minimize the uncertainties in the results produced by the climate model to the local scale. Because of water mass-balance, evapotranspiration tended to increase steadily with an increase in air temperature, while the increase in RCP 8.5 scenario resulted in higher RCP 4.5 scenario. The increase in evapotranspiration led to a decrease in the river flow, particularly the decrease in the surface runoff. In the paddy agricultural watershed, irrigation water demand is expected to increase despite an increase in rainfall owing to the high evapotranspiration rates occasioned by climate change.
