We have focused on the development of a fiber optic BOTDA (Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis) sensor system in order to measure temperature distributed on large structures. Also, we present a feasibility study of the fiber optic sensor to monitor the distributed temperature on a building construction. A fiber optic BOTDA sensor system, which has a capability of measuring the temperature distribution, attempted over several kilometers of long fiber paths. This simple fiber optic sensor system employs a laser diode and two electro-optic modulators. The optical fiber of the length of 1400 m was installed on the surfaces of the building. The change of the distributed temperature on the building construction was well measured by this fiber optic sensor. The temperature changed normally up to 4℃ through one day.

Railway tracks are the direct supporting structures of the trains, which are vulnerable to produce large deformation under the temperature stress or subgrade settlement. The health status of track is critical, and the track should be routinely monitored to improve safety, lower the risk of excess deformation and provide reliable maintenance strategy. In this paper, the distributed optical fiber sensor was proposed to monitor the continuous deformation of the track. In order to validate the feasibility of the monitoring method, two deformation monitoring tests on one steel rail model in laboratory and on one real railway tack in outdoor were conducted respectively. In the model test, the working conditions of simply supported beam and continuous beam in the rail model under several concentrated loads were set to simulate different stress conditions of the real rail, respectively. In order to evaluate the monitoring accuracy, one distributed optical fiber sensor and one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor were installed on the lower surface of the rail model, the strain measured by FBG sensor and the strain calculated from FEA were taken as measurement references. The model test results show that the strain measured by distributed optical fiber sensor has a good agreement with those measured by FBG sensor and FEA. In the outdoor test, the real track suffered from displacement and temperature loads. The distributed optical fiber sensor installed on the rail can monitor the corresponding strain and temperature with a good accuracy.

In this study, a V-grooved single-mode fiber along with optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) as a quasi-distributed temperature sensor was investigated. The external medium used to fill the V-groove affects the optical mode. The V-groove was filled with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) because its transmittance was sensitive to temperature. The experimental results showed that the optical loss of the sensor varies with temperature, and the sensitivity depends on the depth of the V-groove.

We examined the relationship between the 50m temperature estimated by remote sensing sea surface temperature (SST) and fishing ground (squid fishing ground) detected by nighttime visible channel defense meteorological satellite program (DMSP) I operational linescan system (OLS) images in the East/Japan Sea during 1993-2000. The results are as follows: The numbers of nighttime fishing boat were distributed the highest in October, and the lowest in April during this study. A nighttime fishing grounds have concentrated in the East Korea Warm Current region, coastal regions of Honshu Island, and Polar front region. Fishing grounds have distributed $11-18^{\circ}C$ of estimated 50m temperature from the satellite data. Relationship between estimated 50m temperature and the distributed fisheries boats showed that the north boundaries of fishing grounds have distributed the temperature of below $12^{\circ}C$ from 1996 to 2000 and that of $13-15^{\circ}C$ during 1993-1995 and 1997-1999. Stable fishing grounds appeared near the Korea/Tsushima Strait from January to March. The center of fishing grounds in spring (April-Jun) have moved to the northward than that in winter, and variations appeared largely in winter. In summer (July-September), center of fishing grounds have formed near the Uleung Island in the south east coast of Korea, and in autumn maximum fishing ground appeared in October, the fishing ground southward from November.

Brillouin time-domain analysis in optical fibres is a novel technique making possible a distributed measurement of temperature and strain over long distance and will deeply modify our view about monitoring large structures, such as dams, bridges, tunnels and pipelines, Optical fibre sensing will certainly be a decisive tool for securing dangerous installations and detecting environmental and industrial threats.

We present measurements of the Brillouin frequency shift in an optical fiber using a 1550 nm distributed feedback laser diode(DFB-LD) as a light source. By modulating the probe light with an electro-optic modulator, we confirm the stimulated Brillouin gain spectrum(BGS) and spontaneous BGS using the coherent detection method. We also confirm the applicability of the technique to distributed temperature sensors that measure the change in Brillouin frequency shift due to temperature variations.

A distributed optical fiber temperature sensor can continually monitor the measurand at every point along of its fiber length. It is based on OTDR technics which used extreamlly weak backward scattered light called Raman scattering. When the Pulsed high intensity laser light injected into the optical fiber there are several kind of backscattered light such as Rayleigh, Stokes, and anti-Stokes, etc. caused by impurities molecular vibrations. The temperature distribution is derived form the intensity ratio Raman scatted light-Stokes versus anti-Stokes-and the time function between light injection and signal detection. It is shown that the priniciple of distributed sensing, the system desing, and the result of experiments.

Continuous contraction and expansion of disk brake can be due to friction and temperature difference at repeated sudden braking. As serious vibration at disk is produced, the braking force will be changed ununiformly and braking system can not be stabilized. Temperature and heat flux at disk brake are investigated by structural and thermal analysis in this study. The maximum equivalent stress and displacement are shown respectively at the ventilated hole and the lower part of disk plate. At thermal analysis of initial state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95.9^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The maximum heat flux of $0.0168W/mm^2$ is shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. At thermal analysis of transient state, temperature on disk plate is distributed from $95^{\circ}C$ to $96.5^{\circ}C$ after 100 second. The maximum heat flux of $0.0024W/mm^2$ is also shown at the inner friction part between disk plate and pad. By comparing with initial state, the temperature on disk plate is more uniformly distributed and heat flux is more decreased by 7 times at transient state.

This paper presents a distributed temperature sensor which uses a multimode optical fiber. The temperature distribution is derived from the intensity of the Raman back scattering light. Testing the sensors on measurement length of 2km of this system shows good temperature characteristics of the heated/cooled section. These performance will useful to design such as monitoring abnormal temperature rise of electric facilities.

In this article, we studied the effect of two-temperature in a two-dimensional orthotropic thermoelastic media with fractional order heat transfer in generalized thermoelasticity with three-phase-lags due to thermomechanical sources. The boundary of the surface is subjected to linearly distributed and concentrated loads (mechanical and thermal source). The solution of the problem is obtained with the help of Laplace and Fourier transform techniques. The expressions for displacement components, stress components and conductive temperature are derived in transformed domain. Numerical inversion technique is used to obtain the results in physical domain. The effect of two-temperature on all the physical quantities has been depicted with the help graphs. Some special cases are also discussed in the present investigation.
