  • Recently, more power facilities are needed to cope with the increasing electric demand. However, the additional construction of generators, transmission and distribution installations is not easy because of environmental problems and citizen's complaints. Under this circumstance, a microgrid system with distributed renewable resources emerges as an alternative of the traditional power systems. Moreover, the configuration of power system changes with more DC loads and more DC installations. This paper is written to introduce an idea of a genetic algorithm-based solution to determine the optimal capacity of the distributed generators depending on the types of system configuration: AC-link, DC-link and Hybrid-link types. In this paper, photovoltaic, wind turbine, energy storage system and diesel generator are considered as distributed generators and the feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the calculated capacity of each distributed resource with HOMER simulation results for 3 types of system configuration.

  • In recent years, the power demand has been increasing steadily and the occurrence of maximum power demand has been moving from the summer season to the winter season in Korea. And since the control of electric power supply and demand is more important under those situations, a micro-grid system began to emerge as a keyword for the sTable operation of electric power system. A micro-gird power system is composed of various kinds of distributed generators(DG) such as small diesel generator, wind turbine, photo-voltaic generator and energy storage system(ESS). This paper introduces a method to determine the optimal capacities of the distributed generators which are installed in a stand-alone type of microgrid power system based on the fundamental proportion of diesel generator. At first, the fundamental proportion of diesel generator will be determined by changing from 0 to 50 percent. And then we will optimize the capacities of renewable energy resources and ESS according to load patterns. Lastly, after recalculating the capacity of ESS with consideration for SOC constraints, the optimal capacities of distributed generators will be decided.

  • We envisage that grid computing environments allow us to implement distributed data mining services, that is, those applications which analyze large sets of geographically distributed databases and information using the computational power and resources of a grid environment. This paper describes an experimental framework towards such a distributed data mining approach, including design considerations and a prototype implementation. Based on the "Knowledge Grid" architecture suggested by Cannataro et al., we identify four major components - user node, broker node, data node, and computation node - and define their individual roles. For implementing the prototype, we have investigated methods for utilizing distributed resources within a grid computing environment, e.g., communication and coordination among the various resources available.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to develop a static equivalent model of an inverter-based distributed energy resource (DER), where the model is used for a steady-state fault analysis of a power grid. First, we introduce the characteristics of an inverter-based DER as well as its general configuration. Then, we derive the equivalent model of the DER on the basis of the characteristics. Last, the performance of the proposed method is proven by the results of computer simulations.

  • In order to probe such mineral resources, AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) have been used instead of ROVs (Remotely-Operated Vehicles) that are not suitable to probe submarine resources distributed over a wide area. However, the power consumption of AUVs needs to be reduced as they are operated by batteries. In controlling the power of underwater vehicles, the efficiency of batteries and their capacity have been heightened. This study aimed at developing a power control system suitable to the prober for submarine mineral resources. As a result, power was reduced as compared to the non-control system and the prober could explore the seabed longer than usual.

  • The introduction of new renewable energy is going on increase with the second plan of the Korean Government "Technology Development, Utilization and Popularization of New Renewable Energy". In general, it is connected to the power system due to the nature of it's source characteristics but it's interconnection operation impacts on the power system planning and operation. The operation schemes of the existing power distribution system are based on the unidirectional power flow, but unidirectional power flow changes to bidirectional power flow due to the interconnection operation of new renewable energy. It degrade the existing protection coordination system and power quality of the power distribution system. Thus, the technical evaluation process of the interconnection of new renewable energy are necessary. In this paper, the characteristics of the existing automatic recloser and sectionalizer are reviewed and interconnection capacity evaluation method of the DR(distributed resources) in the existing automatic recloser-sectionalizer protective coordination system are proposed.

  • Purpose The recent concern over environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emission and fine dust contributes increasing interest in renewable energies. However the intrinsic characteristics of renewable energies, intermittent and stochastic generation, might cause serious problems to the stability and controllability of power grid. Therefore countermeasures such as virtual power plant (VPP) must be prepared in advance of the spread of uncontrollable distributed renewable energy resources to be one of major energy sources. Design/methodology/approach This study deals with the design concept of the VPP platform. we proposed as a technology solution for achieving the stability of power grid by guaranteeing a single power profile combining multiple distributed power sources with ICT. The core characteristics of VPP should be able to participate in the grid operation by responding to operation instructions from the system operator, KPX, as well as the wholesale electricity market. Findings Therefore this study includes energy storage device(ESS) as a controllable component as well as renewable energy resources such as photovoltaic and wind power generation. Based on this configuration, we discussed core element technologies of VPP and protype design of VPP solution platform according to system requirements. In the proposed solution platform, UX design for the integrated control center and brokerage system were included as well as ancillary service function to respond to KPX's operation instruction with utilizing the capability of ESS. In addition, a simulator was suggested to verify the VPP operations.

  • Nowadays a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) represents an aggregation of distributed energy resource such as Distributed Generation (DG), Combined Heat and Power generation (CHP), Energy Storage Systems (ESS) and load in order to operate as a single power plant by using Information and Communication Technologies, ICT. The VPP has been developed and verified based on a single virtual plant platform which is connected with a number of various distributed energy resources. As the VPP's distributed energy resources increase, so does the number of data from distributed energy. Moreover, it is obviously inefficient in the aspects of technique and cost that a virtual plant platform operates in a centralized manner over widespread region. In this paper the concept of the large-scale VPP which can reduce a error probability of system's load and increase the robustness of data exchange among distributed energy resources will be proposed. In addition, it can directly control and supervise energy resource by making small size's virtual platform which can make a optimal resource scheduling to consider of variable and sensitive load in the large-scale VPP. It makes certain the result is verified by simulation.
