The aim of this paper is to present a new algorithm for the load flow problem using modified Newton-Raphson (NR) iteration method and a approach to derive a simple formula to compensate the reactive power at some heavy load bus. The reactive power source used in this research is the DG which is adjacent to the heavy load. Phenomena of low voltages may cause the load flow calculation process to diverge. In modified NR method, low voltages will be detected and corrected before the next iteration. Therefore, the results of load flow calculation process satisfy the voltage constraint i.e. higher than the lower voltage limit or higher than the critical voltage in case the conventional load flow diverges. Linearizing the power network using PTDFs is a simple method with accepted errors. A new value of voltage at the DG terminal is computed in terms of the voltage deviation of load buses. In this approach, solving the entire system is unnecessary.

Recently, DC systems are considered as efficient electric power systems for renewable energy based clean power generators. This discloses several critical issues that are required to be considered before the installation of the DC systems. First of all, voltage/current switching stress, which is aggravated by large fault current, might damage DC circuit breakers. This problem can be simply solved by applying a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) as proposed in this study. It allows a simple use of insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) as a DC circuit breaker. To evaluate the proposed resistive type SFCL application to the DC circuit breaker, a DC distribution system is composed of the practical line impedances from the real distribution system in Do-gok area, Korea. Also, to reflect the distributed generation (DG) effects, several DC-to-DC converters are applied. The locations and sizes of the DGs are optimally selected according to the results of previous studies on DG optimization. The performance of the resistive type SFCL applied DC circuit breaker is verified by a time-domain simulation based case study using the power systems computer aided design/electromagnetic transients including DC (PSCAD/ EMTDC(R)).

This paper presents an advanced modeling and simulation technique applied to DC/DC power electronic converters fed through renewable energy power sources. The distributed generation (DG) system at the Illinois Institute of Technology, which employs a phase-l system consisting of a photovoltaic-based power system and a phase-2 system consisting of a fuel cell based primary power source, is studied. The modeling and simulation of the DG system is done using the generalized state space averaging (GSSA) method. Furthermore, the paper compares the results achieved upon simulation of the specific GSSA models with those of popular computer aided design software simulations performed on the same system. Finally, the GSSA and CAD software simulation results are accompanied with test results achieved via experimentation on both, the PV-based phase-l system and the fuel cell based phase-2 power system.

To address the inaccurate load demand sharing problems among parallel inverter-interfaced voltage-controlled distributed generation (DG) units in islanded microgrids (MGs) with different DG power ratings and mismatched feeder impedances, an enhanced voltage control scheme based on the active compensation of circulating voltage drops is proposed in this paper. Using the proposed strategy, reactive power and harmonic currents are shared accurately and proportionally without knowledge of the feeder impedances. Since the proposed local controller consists of two well-separated fundamental and harmonic voltage control branches, the reactive power and harmonic currents can be independently shared without having a remarkable effect on the amplitude or quality of the DGs voltage, even if nonlinear (harmonic) loads are directly connected at the output terminals of the units. In addition, accurate load sharing can also be attained when the plug-and-play performance of DGs and various loading conditions are applied to MGs. The effects of communication failures and latency on the performance of the proposed strategy are also explored. The design process of the proposed control system is presented in detail and comprehensive simulation studies on a three-phase MG are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

With the diversification of distribution facilities, existing distributed generation can be subdivided into Microgrids, which are smaller units for application. These Microgrids, subdivided as such and connected to distribution systems, should operate under driving plans that will ensure their economic efficiency and, accordingly, the configuration of those distribution systems that include Microgrids should also be changed. The perception of the necessity to secure the economic efficiency of distribution systems is gradually increasing and studies intended to assess the economic efficiency of Microgrids and Smartgrids are ongoing. In this paper, the power generation capacity of an economically operative Microgrid was calculated using the MonteCarlo simulation, which is a method based on the probability theory considering the power generation cost of Microgrids linked with power supply systems and reverse sales costs, etc., and an optimum distribution systems was configured based on the results of these calculation.

A safe and reliable protection system in distribution networks, specifically, those hosting distribution generation units, needs a robust over-current protection scheme. To avoid unintentional DG disconnection during fault conditions, a protection system should operate quickly and selectively. Therefore, to achieve this aim, satisfying coordination constraints are important for any protection scheme in distribution networks; these pose a challenging task in interconnected and large-scale networks. In this paper, a new coordination strategy, based on the same non-standard time-current curve for all relays, in order to find optimal coordination of directional over-current relays, is proposed. The main aim is to reduce violations, especially miscoordination between pair relays. Besides this, the overall time of operation of relays during primary and backup operations should be minimized concurrently. This work is being tackled based on genetic algorithms and motivated by the heuristic algorithm. For the numerical analysis, to show the superiority of this coordination strategy, the IEEE 30-bus test system, with a mesh structure and supplemented with distributed generation, is put under extensive simulations, and the obtained results are discussed in depth.

Recently, with the increasement of the interest about global warming, pollutions, and so on, a number of distributed generations(DGs) such as photovoltaic(PV) and wind power(WP), are interconnected with distribution systems. However, installing of DGs makes power flow changes such as directions, one-direction to bi-direction, and increasing/decreasing of fault current. Therefore, it may cause the critical problems. This paper proposes an evaluation algorithm for bi-directional protection coordination and presents an evaluation system for protection coordination based on this algorithm. Additionally, the result shows that the existing method may cause critical problems, and also the effectiveness of proposed method is verified.

Introducing distributed generators(DGs) to utility distribution system can cause malfunction of relay on the grid when ground faults or severe load unbalances are occurred on the system. Because DGs interconnected to the grid can contribute fault currents and make bidirectional power flows on the system, fault currents from DGs can cause an interference of relay operation. A directional over current relay(DOCR) can determine the direction of power flow whether a fault occurs at the source side or load side through detecting the phases of voltage and current simultaneously. However, it is identified in this paper that the contributed fault current(Ifdg) from the ground source when was occurred to contribute single-line-to-ground(SLG) fault current, has various phases according to the distances from the ground source. It means that the directionality of Ifdg may not be determined by simply detecting the phases of voltage and current in some fault conditions. The magnitude of Ifdg can be estimated approximately as high as 3 times of a phase current and its maximum is up to 2,000 A depending on the capacity of generation facilities. In order to prevent malfunction of relay and damage of DG facilities from the contribution of ground fault currents, Ifdg should be limited within a proper range. Installation of neutral ground reactor (NGR) at a primary neutral of interconnection transformer was suggested in the paper. Capacity of the proposed NGR can be adjusted easily by controlling taps of the NGR. An algorithm for unidirectional relay was also proposed to prevent the malfunction of relay due to the fault current, Ifdg. By the algorithm, it is possible to determine the directionality of fault from measuring only the magnitude of fault current. It also implies that the directionality of fault can be detected by unidirectional relay without replacement of relay with the bidirectional relay.
Stabilization of the DC bus voltage is an important task in DC-AC microgrid system with renewable energy source such as solar system. A battery energy storage system (BESS) has become a general solution to stabilize the DC-bus voltage in DC-AC microgrid. This paper develops the analog BESS controller which requires neither computation nor dc-bus voltage measurement, so that the system can be implemented simply and easily. Even though others methods can stabilize and control the DC-bus voltage, it has complicated structure in control and low adaptive capability. The proposed topology is simple but is able to compensate the solar source variation and stabilize the DC-bus voltage under any loads and distributed generation (DG) conditions. In addition, the design of analog controller is presented to obtain a robust system. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, simulation is carried out by using PSIM software.
