  • As the technical advances in portable computers and wireless communication technologies, mobile computing environment has been rapidly expanded. The mobile users on mobile host can access information via wireless communication from the distributed heterogeneous multidatabase system in which pre-existing independent local information systems are integrated into one logical system to support mobile applications. Hence, mobile transaction model should include not only the features for heterogeneous multidatabase systems but also the ones for mobile computing environment. In this paper, we proposed a mobile flex transaction model which extends the flexible transaction model that previously proposed for heterogeneous multidatabase systems is extended to support the requirements of mobile heterogeneous multidatabase systems. We also presented the execution control mechanism of the mobile flex transaction model. The proposed mobile flex transaction model allows the definition of location-dependent subtransactions, the effective support of hand-over, and the flexibility of transaction executions. Hence, the proposed mobile flex transaction model can be suit to mobile heterogeneous multidatabase systems that have low power capability, low bandwidth, and high communication failure possibility.

  • Web Service technologies make the automation of business activities that are distributed across multiple enterprises possible. Existing extended transaction protocols typically resort to compensation actions to regain atomicity and consistency. A reservation-based transaction protocol is proposed to reduce high compensation risk. However, for a serial long running transaction processing, the resource that is reserved in the early stage may be released due to resource holding time expires. Therefore, our analysis theoretically illustrates a scheduling scheme that tries to prevent the loss of resource holding as well as gain an optimized execution plan with minimum compensation cost. In order to estimate cost of different schedules, we set up a costing model and cost metric to quantize compensation risk.

  • AMobile-supported spatial database systems have been introduced with development of mobile computing technology, they offer an advantage that we can access the data wherever we are. However, the studies on database system in traditional distributed environments must be reconsidered again, because of characteristics of mobile database system such as mobility and instability of wireless network. A new transaction model should be required for considering the characteristics, since especially a mobile computing environment is location-dependent, compared with the location transparency in a distributed computing environment. In other aspect, normally mobile host may be moving not in all space, but in some limited path. That is, a host is moving along the roads or the geographical features adjacent to the roads. The transaction processing should be considered not on the spatial coordinate but on the geographical features. In this paper, the feature based transaction processing model is proposed to process location-dependent transaction efficiently.

  • To alleviate the blocking inherent in 2-phase commit protocol(2PC) that is widely used to ensure the atomicity of global transactions in distributed environments, an optimistic 2PC can be used. Under the optimistic 2PC, compensation transactions are introduced to ensure the atomicity of transactions, which may result in the violation of global serializability due to the properties of compensation, transactions. In this paper, we propose several valid management protocols for global transactions to ensure the global serializability through the analysis of transaction of state transitions. To determine the execution of one global transaction, the proposed protocols check the sates of other concurrent global transactions. According to the result, execution of the global transaction may be delayed to ensure the global serializability.

  • In designing distributed databases, DAP(Data Allocation Problem) is one of the key design issues. Because, however, most of previous researches on DAP have considered only cost aspect, they cannot increase the performance and availability and they are not proper to the system requiring high-availability or real-time processing. Therefore, we need a more formal data allocation model considering multiple aspects. In this paper, we propose the MAPN (Multiple Aspects Petri Net) modeling method for the distributed transaction modeling. The MAPN model, an extended classical petri net, is proposed for the formal modeling considering multiple aspects (cost, performance and availability) concurrently. We demonstrate that we can compose the valid DAP evaluation model considering not only cost but also performance and availability concurrently by using the MAPN structure and MAPN graph.

  • In addition t improved availability, replication of data can enhance performance of distributed real-time transaction processing system by allowing transactions initiated at multiple node to be processed concurrently. To satisfy both the consistency and real-time constraints, it is necessary to integrate concurrency control and atomic commitment protocols with time-driven scheduling methods. blocking caused by existing concurrency control protocols is incompatible with time-driven scheduling because they cannot schedule transactions to meet given deadlines. To maintain consistency of replicated data and to provide a high degree of schedulability and predictability , the proposed time-driven scheduling methods integrate optimistic concurrency control protocols that minimize the duration of blocking and produce the serialization by reflecting the priority transactions. The atomicity of transactions is maintained to ensure successful commitment in distributed environment. Specific time-driven scheduling techniqueare discussed, together with an analysis of the performance of this scheduling.
