We present an efficient and robust technique to estimate the velocity of moving targets from a single SAR image. In SAR images, azimuth image shift is a well known phenomenon, which is observed in moving targets having slant-range velocity. Most methods estimated the velocity of moving targets from the distance difference between the road and moving targets or between ship and the ship wake. However, the methods could not be always applied to moving targets because it is difficult to find the road and the ship wake. We adopted a method estimating the velocity of moving targets from azimuth differentials of range-compressed image. This method is based on an assumption that Doppler center frequency shift of moving target causes a phase difference in azimuth differential values. The phase difference is linearly distorted by Doppler rate due to the geometry of SAR image. The linear distortion is eliminated from phase removal procedure, and the constant phase difference is estimated. Finally, range velocity estimates for moving targets are retrieved. This technique is tested using an ENVISAT ASAR image in which several unknown ships are presented. The theoretical accuracy of this technique is discussed by SAR simulation. The advantages and disadvantages of this method over the conventional method are also discussed.

A mesh generation algorithm adapted to the mesh density map using the Delaunay mesh generation technique is developed. In the finite element analyses of the forging processes, the numerical error increases as the process goes on because of discrete property of the finite elements or severe distortion of elements. Especially, in the region where stresses and strains are concentrated, the numerical discretization error will be highly increased. However, it is too time consuming to use a uniformly fine mesh in the whole domain to reduce the expected numerical error. Therefore, it is necessary to construct locally refined mesh at the region where the error is concentrated such as at the die corner. In this study, the point insertion algorithm is used and the mesh size is controlled by moving nodes to optimized positions according to a mesh density map constructed with a posteriori error estimation. An optimization technique is adopted to obtain a good position of nodes. And optimized smoothing techniques are also adopted to have smooth distribution of the mesh and improve the mesh element quality.

An image reconstruction algorithm is proposed to estimate transmitted original images from images displayed on a video terminal. The proposed algorithm acquires images that are displayed on video terminal screens by using a camera. The transmitted images are then estimated with the acquired images. However, camera-acquired images exhibit geometric and color distortions caused by characteristics of the camera and display devices. We make use of a geometric distortion correction algorithm that exploits homography and color distortions using a weighted-linear model. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm yields promising estimation performance with respect to the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). PSNR values of the estimated images with respect to the corresponding original images range from 28-29 dB.
This paper presents a power-efficient hardware realization for a motion estimation technique that is based on the full-search block matching algorithm (FSBMA). The considered input is the quarter common intermediate format of digital video. The mean of absolute difference (MAD) is the distortion criteria employed for the block matching process. The conventional architecture considered for the hardware realization of FSBMA is that of the shift register-based 2-D systolic array. For this architecture, a conservative approximation technique is adapted to eliminate unnecessary MAD computations involved in the block matching process. Upon introducing the technique to the conventional architecture, the power and complexity of its implantation is reduced, while the accuracy of the motion vector extracted from the block matching process is preserved. The proposed architecture is verified for its functional specifications. A performance evaluation of the proposed architecture is carried out using parameters such as power, area, operating frequency, and efficiency.

Dark channel prior means that, for undistorted outdoor images, at least one color channel of a pixel or its neighbors have values close to 0, and thus the prior can be used to estimate the amount of distortion for given distorted images. In other words, if an image is distorted by blur, its dark channel values are averaged with neighbor pixel values and thus increase. This paper proposes a method that estimates blur strengths by analyzing the variation of dark channel values caused by blur. Through experiments with images distorted by Gaussian and horizontal motion blur with given strengths, the usefulness of the proposed method is verified.
This paper describes an unscented Kalman filter approach to estimate the bias in magnetic field measurements. A microelectromechanical systems attitude heading reference system (MEMS AHRS) was used to measure the magnetic field, together with the acceleration and angular rate. A magnetic field is usually used for yaw detection, while the acceleration serves to detect the roll and pitch. Magnetic field measurements are vulnerable to distortion due to hard-iron effect and soft-iron effect. The bias in the measurement accounts for the hard-iron effect, and this paper focuses on an approach to estimate this bias. The proposed method is compared with other methods through experiments that implement the navigation of an underwater robot using an AHRS and Doppler velocity log. The results verify that the compensation of the bias by the proposed method improves the navigation performance more than or comparable to the compensation by other methods.
Wi-Fi Round-trip timing (RTT) based location estimation technology estimates the distance between the user and the AP based on the transmission and reception time of the signal. This is because reception instability and signal distortion are greater than that of a Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) based fingerprint in an indoor NLOS environment, resulting in a large position error due to multipath fading. To solve this problem, in this paper, we propose an end-to-end based WiFi Trilateration Net (WTN) that combines neural network-based RTT correction and trilateral positioning network, respectively. The proposed WTN is composed of an RNN-based correction network to improve the RTT distance accuracy and a neural network-based trilateral positioning network for real-time positioning implemented in an end-to-end structure. The proposed network improves learning efficiency by changing the trilateral positioning algorithm, which cannot be learned through differentiation due to mathematical operations, to a neural network. In addition, in order to increase the stability of the TOA based RTT, a correction network is applied in the scanning step to collect reliable distance estimation values from each RTT AP.

This paper addresses a novel approach to performance enhancement of the naval gun fire control system(FCS) by using the projectile tracking filter without any distortion of radar measurements. Under the assumption that the maneuvering between the projectile and the ship equipped with the radar is not quite large, this method is based on the concept of polar-coordinate target tracking, which separates the range estimation filter and the direction cosine estimation filter. Note that using polar-coordinates allows tracking to be performed in the same coordinate system from which the radar line-of-sight(LOS) measurements are obtained, unlike the conventional tracking process in Cartesian. Also, it is easy to implement in real-time and guarantees consistent estimates due to its linear filter structure. With the help of the above method, therefore, the proposed filter is able to improve the overall performance of FCS which requires stability of projectile estimates within a short engagement time. The effectiveness of the presented scheme is validated through computer simulations.

The virtual reality (VR) technology has been used as the application of architectural presentation or simulation tool in the field of industry. The high immersion and intuitive visual information are the great merits of design evaluation or environmental simulation when we are using the virtual environments. But the distortion of distance perception in VR is still a big problem when the accuracy of distance presentation is strictly required. For example, distance estimation is especially important when the virtual environments are applied to the presentational tool for evaluation the space design or planning in the field of architecture. If there are some perception error between the built space in real and represented space in virtual, the accurate design evaluation or modification of design is hard to be carried out during the design development stage. In this paper, we have carried out some experiments about distance estimation in the immersive virtual environments to verify the factors and their influence. We made a hypothesis that the lack of the information for the user in VR causes the different distance estimation from the real world because users are usually comfortable with moving fast and long distance in VR environments compared with moving slow and short distance in real space. So, we carried out basic experiment to prove our hypothesis that the lack of information makes subjects estimate the distance of walking in VR shorter compared with the same distance in real. Also, among the factors that probably affect the distance estimation in VR, we have verified the influence of the image resolution. The influence of resolution degradation of image on the distance estimation was verified with the condition of static and dynamic images. The results showed that the resolution has deep relation with the distance estimation. For example, the subject underestimated the distance at the lower resolution condition. We also found the methods of the making the lower resolution image could affect on the visual perception of subjects.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve portion size estimation aids (PSEAs) used in the nutrition survey of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and validate the accuracy and precision of the newly developed aids. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted intensive interviews with survey experts in KNHANES and consulted with experts to collect opinions about improvement of PSEAs. Based on the results of the interviews, 5 types of PSEAs (rice bowl, earthen pots, mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks) were newly developed using 3-dimensional (3D) modeling or modification of color or shape. Validation tests were conducted with 96 adults 20 years old or older. For the rice bowl and earthen pots, the participants were asked to select the more similar PSEA in size after being shown the real dishes. For the mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks, the participants were presented with actual plates of food and asked to estimate the given portion sizes using the given PSEAs. RESULTS: The improved 2-dimensional (2D) picture aid for the rice bowl reflecting the size distortion by angle of view using 3D modeling was perceived more closely to the actual size than the current 2D picture (P < 0.001). The change of the color of 2D pictures and 3D models, the change of shape of the measuring spoons, and the 3-dimensionalization of the 2D mounds had no significant improvement in the subjects' perception. CONCLUSIONS: The currently used 2D PSEAs need to be fully redesigned using 3D modeling to improve subjects' perception. However, change of color or shape will not be necessary. For amorphous foods, it is suggested that more evaluation be performed before reaching a final conclusion in the use of PSEAs, or alternative ways to improve accuracy of estimation need to be explored.
