Safety-related messages are propagated in form of broadcasting among vehicles in vehicle safety communication. There is the broadcast storm problem in high density vehicle environments. To solve this problem, a distance-based broadcast scheme has been proposed. It causes a serious problem such as retransmission delay in low density vehicle environments since it requires additional defer time to rebroadcast messages. This paper proposes a distance and random-based broadcast scheme. The proposed scheme selects a random time from zero to the defer time that estimated depending on the distance between sending and receiving vehicles. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme requires shorter defer time and less rebroadcasting message than existing schemes.
Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET), a kind of mobile ad-hoc network (MANET), is a key technology for building intelligent transportation system (ITS). VANET is automatically and temporarily established through vehicle-to-vehicle communication without network infrastructure. It has the characteristics that frequent changes of network topology and node density are occurred and messages are disseminated through several relay nodes in the network. Due to frequent change of network topology and node density, however, VANET requires an effective relay node selection scheme to disseminate messages through the multi-hop broadcast. In this paper, we propose a contention window based multi-hop broadcast scheme for VANET. Each node has an optimized contention window and competes with each other for a relay node. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has a better performance than the distance-based deterministic broadcast scheme in terms of message propagation delay and network traffic.

Most Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) applications rely heavily on broadcast transmission of traffic related information to all reachable nodes within a certain geographical area. Among various broadcast approaches, flooding is the first broadcasting technique. Each node rebroadcasts the received message exactly once, which results in broadcast storm problems. Some mechanisms have been proposed to improve flooding in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET), but they are not effective for VANET and only a few studies have addressed this issue. We propose two distance-based and timer-based broadcast suppression techniques: 15P(15percent) and slotted 15P. In the first (distance based) scheme, node's transmission range is divided into three ranges (80%,15%and5%). Only nodes within 15% range will rebroadcast received packet. Specific packet retransmission range (15%) is introduced to reduce the number of messages reforwarding nodes that will mitigate the broadcaststorm. In the second (timer-based) scheme, waiting time allocation for nodes within 15% range isused to significantly reduce the broadcaststorm. The proposed schemes are distributed and reliedon GPS information and do not requireany other prior knowledge about network topology. To analyze the performance of proposed schemes, statistics such as link load and the number of retransmitted nodes are presented. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes can significantly reduce link load at high node densities up to 90 percent compared to a simple broadcast flooding technique.

Broadcasting in multi-hop wireless sensor networks is a basic operation that supports many applications such as route search, setting up addresses and sending messages from the sink to sensor nodes. The broadcasting using flooding causes problems that can be mentioned as a broadcasting storm such as redundancy, contention and collision. A variety of broadcasting schemes using wireless sensor networks have been proposed to achieve superior performance rather than simple flooding scheme. Broadcasting algorithms in wireless sensor networks can be classified into six subcategories: flooding scheme, probabilistic scheme, counter-based scheme, distance-based scheme, location-based schemes, and neighbor knowledge-based scheme. This study analyzes a simple flooding scheme, probabilistic scheme, counter-based scheme, distance-based scheme, and neighbor knowledge-based scheme, and compares the performance and efficiency of each scheme through network simulation.
Vehicular ad-hoc networks is temporarily established through inter-vehicle communication without any additional infrastructure aids. It requires a immediate message propagation because it mainly deals with critical traffic information such as traffic accidents. The distance-based broadcast scheme is one of the representative broadcast schemes for vehicular ad-hoc network. In this scheme, a node to disseminate messages is selected based on a distance from a source node. However, a message propagation delay will be increased if the relay nodes are not placed at the border of transmission range of the source node. In particular, when the node density is low, the message propagation delay is getting longer. In this paper, we propose a time-window reservation based relay node selection scheme. A node receiving the alert message from the source node has its time-window and randomly selects its waiting time within the given time-window range. A proportional time period of the given time-window is reserved in order to reduce the message propagation delay. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has shorter message propagation delay than the distance-based broadcast scheme irrespective of node density in VANET. In particular, when the node density is low, the proposed scheme shows about 26% shorter delay and about 46% better performance in terms of compound metric, which is a function of propagation latency and network traffic.
The results of location-dependent queries(LDQ) generally depend on the current locations of query issuers. Many mechanisms, e.g. broadcast scheme, hoarding, or racking policy, have been developed to improve the system peformance and provide better services, which are specialized for LDQs. Considering geographical adjacency of data and characteristics oi target area, caching policy and broadcast scheme affect the overall performance in LDQ. For this reason, we propose both the caching policy and broadcast scheme, which these features are reflected in. Based on the adjacency of data in LDQ, our broadcast scheme use Hilbert curve to cluster data. Moreover, in order to develop the caching policy suitable for LDQ on urban area, we apply the moving distance of a MH(Mobile Host) to our caching policy We evaluate the performance of the caching policy measuring the workload of MHs and the correctness of LDQ results and the performance of the broadcast scheme measuring the average setup-time of MHs in our experiments. Finally, we expect that our caching policy Provides more correct answers when executing LDQ in focal cache and leads significant improvement of the performance of MHs. It also seems quite probable that our broadcast scheme leads improvement of battery life of the MH.
This paper proposes a novel method to detect unauthorized copies of digital images. This copy detection scheme can be used as either an alternative approach or a complementary approach to watermarking. A test image is reduced to 8$\times$8 sub-image by intensity averaging, and the AC coefficients of its discrete cosine transform (DCT) are used to compute distance from those generated from the query image, of which a user wants to find copies. Copies may be Processed to avoid copy detection or enhance image quality. We show ordinal measure of DCT coefficients, which is based on relative ordering of AC magnitude values and using distance metrics between two rank permutations, are robust to various modifications of the original image. The optimal threshold selection scheme using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion is also addressed.

In this paper, we propose an efficient counter-based broadcast scheme for high reachability and energy efficiency. To achieve this, we propose a method to calculate additional coverage when a node receives the same broadcast message from both nodes, in order to rebroadcast by a node who can cover an large area. We also propose a formula to determine random access delay (RAD) considering addition coverage, distance, density, and remaining battery information, and a formula to determine count threshold ($C_{th}$) considering density and remaining battery information. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the proposed broadcast scheme compared with the existing counter-based broadcast schemes through simulation.
Broadcasting is fundamental and effective data dissemination mechanism for route discovery, address resolution, and many other network services in mobile ad hoc networks. Although many approaches for broadcasting have been proposed to minimize the number of retransmissions, none of them guarantee the best-suited bounds of retransmissions. Appropriate use of probabilistic method can lower the chance of contention and collision among neighboring nodes, so that it reduces the number of rebroadcasts. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic approach that dynamically adjusts the rebroadcasting probability according to the distance between the sender and the receiver. While the rebroadcast probabilities of a mobile node close to sender will be set lower, the rebroadcast probabilities of a mobile node far away from sender wi1l be set to higher, The rebroadcast probability of a node wi1l be set according to the distance from sender. We evaluate the performance of proposed approach by comparing it with flooding as well as a fixed probabilistic broadcast approach. Simulation results showed that the performance of proposed scheme outperforms by about $70\%$ than flooding scheme and outperforms by about $20\%$ than fixed probabilistic scheme.
In this paper, we propose a method to improve the accuracy of positioning by adding angle and distance validation to the existing Bluetooth-based positioning method using the angle of arrival. In the existing positioning method, an error occurs in the positioning value due to a multipath phenomenon induced in a non-visible distance environment. The proposed method derives the maximum and minimum angles of arrival that can be measured in consideration of the moving speed of the positioned device, and then examines whether the measured angle of arrival exceeds the range of the maximum and minimum angles of arrival. The accuracy of positioning is improved by conducting a distance validation check to see if the location of the device to be positioned and the distance to the positioning device exceed the effective distance. A simulation was conducted to analyze the positioning performance between the proposed method and the existing method, and it was confirmed that the positioning performance was improved through angle and distance validation compared to the existing method in a situation where the positioning error increased through the simulation results.
