  • Recently may investigations have been studied on the high-speed machining by using machine tools. A CNC machine tool makes some tool path errors caused by software acceleration/deceleration. The faster a cutting feedrate is, the bigger the tool path errors are. Some known methods reduce these kinds of errors, but they make the total cutting time increased. This paper presents a feed-forward algorithm that can be generated by distorting the original tool path, and reduces the tool path errors and the total cutting time. The algorithm to generate a new tool path is represented as following; 1)calculating each distance of software acceleration/deceleration between two adjacent blocks, 2) estimating the distorted distance which is the adjacent-ratio-constant(k1, k2) multiply the distance of software acceleration/deceleration, 3) generating a 3-degree Bezier curve approximating the distorted tool path, 4) symmetrically transforming the Bezier curve about the intersection point between two blocks, and 5) connecting the transformed Bezier curve with the original tool path. The algorithm is applied to FANUC 0M. The study is to promote the high-precision machining and to reduce the total cutting time.

  • This study is carried out to evaluate the sight distance change due to construction errors of vertical crest curves. Various design speeds and grades as well as various size of construction errors are incorporated in this study. After showing theoretical methodology numerical results are compared and analysed for the given ranges of parameters. New vertical curve change rate(m/%) is suggested to guarantee minimum sight distance under construction errors. As to the results, the reduction of sight distance are $2.8{\sim}21.3m$ at 120km/h, $2.0{\sim}15.1m$ at 100km/h, $1.4{\sim}10.6m$ at 80km/h, $1.0{\sim}7.5m$ at 60km/h $0.5{\sim}3.9m$ at 40km/h. Vortical curve change rates need to be increased about $6{\sim}25%$ to provide minimum stopping sight distance according to design speed.

  • Purpose: To investigate the proper distance from patient to target when measuring refractive error using open view target type auto-refractor(OVTAR), it was compared refractive errors between by OVTAR using N-vision-K5001 auto-refractor and internal fixation target type auto-refractor(IFTAR) using Canon auto-refractor. Methods: 21 subjects(42 eyes) aged 22.2(${\pm}$3.4) years old who had over 1.0 of corrected visual acuity and no ocular disease were participated for this study. Noncycloplegic measurements of refractive error were performed using a IFTAR(RK-F1, Canon, Japan) and an OVTAR(N-vision-K5001, Shin-nippon, Japan). The distances from subjects to targets in using the open the view target type auto-refractor were 1 m, 3 m, 4 m and 6 m. The refractive errors were compared between by IFTAR and by 1 m, 3 m, 4 m and 6 m target distances respectively using OVTAR. Results: At 1 m fixation distance the mean of refractive errors for total subjects was not significantly different between by OVTAR(-2.75${\pm}$1.84 D) and by IFTAR(-2.95${\pm}$2.04 D)(p=0.06). However at 3, 4 and 6 m fixation distance refractive errors by OVTAR were significantly lower myopic refractive errors than by IFTAR(p<0.05). Conclusions: The distance from subject to fixation target is needed over 3 m for the measurement of refractive error using OVTAR even not to 5~6 m distance.

  • The brightest stars in galaxies have been used as distance indicators since Hubble. However, the accuracy of the brightest stars for distance estimates has been controversial. Recently, Rozanski & Rowan-Robinson [1994 : MNRAS, 271, 530] argued large errors of this method for the distance determination : 0.58 mag and 0.90 mag, respectively, for the brightest red stars and the brightest blue stars, while Karachentsev & Tikhonov [1994 : A&A, 286, 718] suggested much smaller errors in the distance determination than the former: 0.37 mag for the brightest red stars and 0.46 mag for the brightest blue stars. The reasons for these conflicting results are not yet known. In this study we have investigated the accuracy of this method using a sample of 17 galaxies for which Cepheid distances are known and reliable photometry of the brightest stars are available. We have obtained the calibrations of the relations between the mean luminosities of the three blue and red brightest supergiants (BSGs and RSGs, respectively) and the total luminosities of the parent galaxies: $= 0.21M_B^T- 3.84, \sigma(M_v) = 0.37 mag,\;and\;\delta_{\mu0}=0.47$ mag for the brightest red supergiants, and $= 0.30M_B^T -3.02, \sigma(M_B)\;=\;0.55 mag,\;and\; \delta_{\mu0}=0.79mag$ for the brightest blue supergiants. Also it is found that the errors in the distance determination are reduced by a factor of two, as the observing wavelengths increase from B-band to K-band. In conclusion, the brightest red supergiants are considered to be useful for determining the distances to resolved late-type galaxies.

  • This paper presents position error for the robot localization system using the ultrasonic wave. The distance between the receiver and a beacon can be computed by using the difference between times of flight. The distance information measured by ultrasonic wave has errors. The position is calculated by distances, and this error is caused by distance errors. The position error is different from receiver¡s position. And the position is also calculated by beacon location. This paper calculates worst case position error within measuring area, and finds beacons location to reduce the position error.

  • A distance relay has been widely used for transmission line protection. The distance relay detects a fault based on the calculated impedance i.e. the ratio of the voltage to the current measured from a current transformer (CT) and a coupling capacitor voltage transformer (CCVT), respectively. When a fault occurs and a CT saturates due to the magnitude of fault current, dc component, primary time constant, and the remanent flux of the iron core, the secondary current of a CT is distorted On the other hand, non-fundamental components generated during a fault can increase the error of a CCVT, particularly when a fault distance is short. The distortion of the current and voltage can cause mal-operation or the operating time delay of a distance relay. This paper describes the response of a distance relay considering the errors of a CT and a CCVT. The results indicate that the severe distortion of a CT and a CCVT have noticeable effect to a distance relay.

  • This paper proposed ultrasonic distance measurement module development for correct distance detection with collision escaping or obstacle of mobile robot is traveling self-regulation. Representative ultrasonic module applied in existing was Polaroid company's 6500 series and Devantech company's SRF04/SRF08 series. This ultrasonic sensors are corrupted by systematic errors due mainly to the dependency of sound speed upon surrounding conditions and random errors of uncertain origin. Therefore Ultrasonic distance detecting means of error compensation method and high definition, narrow beam angle, board area distance detecting means to apply to ultrasonic mobile robot control urgently need. In this paper use internal type temperature compensation method to improve problem of ultrasonic distance measurement method instead of that volume that have shortcoming of used correct temperature compensation methods applied big addition device. Compensate error by environment change of temperature. Humidity density etc. and is applicable to mobile robot offering various interface and real-time processing developed possible distance measurement module.

  • Lee weight is more appropriate for some practical situations than Hamming weight as it takes into account magnitude of each digit of the word. In this paper, we obtain a sufficient condition over the number of parity check digits for codes correcting random errors and simultaneously detecting burst errors with Lee weight consideration.

  • We have proposed an efficient method of word separation in a handwritten legal amount on bank check based on the spatial gaps between the connected components. The previous gap measures all suffer from the inherent problem of underestimation or overestimation that causes a deterioration in separation performance. In order to alleviate such burden, we have developed a modified version of each distance measure. Also, 4 class clustering based method of integrating three different types of distance measures has been proposed to compensate effectively the errors in each measure, whereby further improvement in performance of word separation is expected. Through a series of word separation experiments, we found that the modified distance measures show a better performance with over 2 - 3% of the word separation rate than their corresponding original distance measures. In addition, the proposed combining method based on 4-class clustering achieved further improvement by effectively reducing the errors common to two of three distance measures as well as the individual errors.

  • Binocular-pair images obtained from two cameras can be used to calculate the three-dimensional (3D) world coordinate of a feature point. However, to apply this method, measurement accuracy of binocular vision depends on some structure factors. This paper presents an experimental study of measurement distance, baseline distance, and baseline direction. Their effects on camera reconstruction accuracy are investigated. The testing set for the binocular model consists of a series of feature points in stereo-pair images and corresponding 3D world coordinates. This paper discusses a method to increase the baseline distance of two cameras for enhancing the accuracy of a binocular vision system. Moreover, there is an inflexion point of the value and distribution of measurement errors when the baseline distance is increased. The accuracy benefit from increasing the baseline distance is not obvious, since the baseline distance exceeds 1000 mm in this experiment. Furthermore, it is observed that the direction errors deduced from the set-up are lower when the main measurement direction is similar to the baseline direction.
