Ion exchange resin was used to remove silica ion at ultralow concentration. The effects of temperature, type of ion exchange resin and single/mixed-resin systems on removal efficiency were estimated. As temperature increased, the slope of concentration profile became stiff, and the equilibrium concentration was higher. In the single resin system, the removal of silica was continued up to 400 min, but the silica concentration was recovered to initial concentration after 400 min due to the effect of dissolved $CO_2$. In the mixed-resin system it took about 600 min to reach equilibrium. Because of faster cation exchange reaction than anion exchange reaction, the effect of $CO_2$ could be removed. Based on the experimental results carried out in the mixed-resin system, the selectivity coefficients of silica ion for each ion exchange resin were calculated at some specific temperatures. The temperature dependency of the selectivity coefficient was expressed by the equation of Kraus-Raridon type.
Zinc confers high corrosion resistance by acting as a sacrificial anode, and a zinc coating improves the appearance of steel. Chromate conversion coating (CCC) films are still one of the most efficient surface treatments for steel. Although such films can self-repair via the dissolution of Cr(VI), dissolved Cr(VI) have adverse effects on humans, and the environment. Therefore, we examined the corrosion protection property and morphology of colloidal silica conversion films as an alternative to CCC films. The corrosion behavior was investigated in 3% NaCl solution using electrochemical techniques, including electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, open circuit potential, and the salt spray test(SST). Corrosion was implied by the appearance of red rust on the specimen surface. In corrosion resistance at 3% NaCl solution, red rust appeared at 15-20, 55-70, and 83-98 days on Zn-electroplated steel, colloidal silica conversion-coated specimens, and CCC-coated specimens, respectively. In the salt spray test, the colloidal silica film provided better corrosion protection than CCC films, i.e., red rust appeared at 96 hours on the Zn-electroplated steel sheet, at 432 hours with the CCC films, and at 888 hours with silica conversion coating.
CuCl nanocrystallites dispersed nonlinear optical silica and borosilicate glasses were fabricated by sol-gel process. CuCl powder was dissolved in TEOS(Si(OC2H5)4) and TMB((CH3O)3B), precursors of silica and borosilicate glasses, with ethanol, water and HCl, and precipitated through the heat treatment in the matrix glass. The optical properties of CuCl doped glasses were measured using the spectrophotometer at room temperature and low temperature(77K); Z1, 2 and Z3 exciton peaks from the absorption spectra, were observed at about 370 nm and 380 nm, respectively. The average radius of nanocrystallites, calculated from the blue shift of Z3 excitons, was measured according to annealing temperature and time. The precipitation temperature of CuCl nanocrystallites was decreased when boron was added to silica glass. Increase of annealing temperature and time made average radius of nanocrystallites saturated about 2 nm.
The objectives of this study were to investigate the change of silicon, cations and anions dissolved in water before and after thawing, and analyzed what the white-colored precipitate (WP) farmed after thawing was composed of. The silicon concentration that has been changed might have been compared with the weight of WP under water-free state. The major component of WP has been approved to be a silicon, while calsium was only a little contained. As the weight of WP has been nearly equal to the reduced silicon concentration, the weight of its could be changeable calculated by silica (SiO$_2$) molecular weight. Therefore, WP could have been presumed to be a silica. The more silicon concentration was increased, the more weight of silicon was increased. Except for the sample "C", the amounts of cations and anions could be found to be unchangeable nearly. As a result of that, WP has been apparent to be silica itself while most of ions (excluded with Si) of any others were not changed.
In this study, we addressed a novel nanosized curdlan-silica complex, which is curdlan bound to silica, for the development of a sustain-releasing micro element fertilizer formulation. The complex was obtained as follow steps; First, Curdlan polymer, sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) and isopropyl alcohol were dissolved in DDW. Next the resultant solution was irradiated by $^{60}Co$ gamma-irradiator (150 TBq of capacity; ACEL, Canada). Then $MgSO_4$ was treated with the resultant solution. The obtained colloidal solution was dried by freeze dryer. Finally, we obtained a novel nanosized curdlan-silica formulation containing $MgSO_4$ from the colloidal solution. The morphology of the complex was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanosized curdlan-silica complex has a particle size ranging from 20 to 80 nm and high stability. Our results suggested that the nano-complex can be applicable to use in various sustain-releasing formulation for pesticide delivery system (PDS).
OMC is essentialiy necessary compound in sun goods as organic UV protecting products. But the skin-trouble problem is raising because of skin penetration of OMC. In this study, non-capsulated pure OMC was compared with Organic-Inorganic-Nano-hybrid OMC for skin penetration force and SPF degree. Organic- Inorganic Nano-Hybrid OMC is OMC trapped in the pore of the mesoporous silica synthesized by the sol-gel method after OMC is nanoemulsified in the system of the hydrogenated Lecithin/ Ethanol/caprylic/capric triglyceride/OMC/water. OMC- nano- emulsion was obtained by a microfluidizing process at 1000bar and then micelle size in the nanoemulsion solution is 100-200nm range. Mesoporous silica nano-hybrid OMC was prepared by the process; surfactant was added in dissolved OMC-Nanoemulsion, then the rod Micelle was formed. OMC-nanoemulsion was capsulated in this rod Micelle and then silica precursor was added in the OMC-nanoemulsion solution. Through the hydrolysis reaction of the silica precursor, mesoporous silica concluding OMC-Nanocapsulation was obtained. The nano-hybrid surface of this OMC-Nanoemulsion-Inorganic system was treated with polyalkyl-silane compound. OMC-Mesoporous silica Nano-hybrids coated with polyalkyl-silane compound show the higher sun protecting factor (SPF Analyzer: INDEX 10-15) than pure OMC and could reduce a skin penetration of OMC. The physico-chemical properties of these nano-hybrids measured on the SPF index, partical size, strcture, specific surface area, pore size, morphology, UV absorption, rate of the OMC dissolution using SPF Analyzer, Laser light scattering system, XRD, BET, SEM, chroma Meter, HPLC, Image analyzer, microfluidizer, UV/VIS. spectrometer.
