The Lake Sihwa watershed includes industrial, urban, and rural areas simultaneously. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in spatial-temporal runoff patterns at representative sites having different land use in the watershed of Lake Sihwa. The result of synchronous and 3D-EEMs(3-Dimensional Excitation Emission Matrix Spectroscopy) analysis in 4TG (industrial area), fluorescence distribution and variation clearly appeared in the Fulvic-like fluorescence (FLF) and Humic-like fluorescence (HLF) regions along with the Protein-like fluorescence (PLF) region. A characteristic that Peak A (HLF) region fluorescence intensity did not decrease and the HLF region of fluorescence intensity and spatial-temporal changes clearly appeared during rainfall in AS (urban area). The results of fluorescence analysis in MS did not show great changes in PLF and FLF while showing that fluorescence intensity changes over time in the Terrestrial-like fluorescence (THLF) region increased greatly. In conclusion, our results showed significant differences in the runoff characteristics of DOM particularly in industrial, urban and rural area, and these differences should be considered for the efficient controlling of DOM in the watershed.

This study examined the effects of environmental conditions and the presence of refractory organic matter on oxidation rates of total organic carbon (TOC) measurements based on high temperature combustion and ultraviolet-sulfate methods. Spectroscopic indices for prediction of oxidation rates were also explored using the UV spectra and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of humic acids. Furthermore, optimum TOC instrument conditions were suggested by comparing oxidation rates of a standard TOC material under various conditions. Environmental conditions included salts, reduced ions, and suspended solids. Salts had the greatest influence on oxidation rates in the UV-sulfate method. However, no effect was detected in the high temperature combustion method. The UV-sulfate method showed lower humic substance oxidation rates, refractory natural organic matter, compared to the other methods. TOC oxidation rates for the UV-sulfate method were negatively correlated with higher specific-UV absorbance, humification index, and humic-like EEM peak intensities, suggesting that these spectroscopic indices could be used to predict TOC oxidation rates. TOC signals from instruments using the UV-sulfate method increased with increasing chamber temperature and increasing UV exposure durations. Signals were more sensitive to the former condition, suggesting that chamber temperature is important for improving the TOC oxidation rates of refractory organic matter.

Microbial changes in the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the subsequent effects on the conditional stability constants of copper were investigated using 14 day-incubations of Pony Lake fulvic acid (PLFA), Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA) and the mixtures of the humic substances and glucose. After incubation, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were diminished, and specific UV absorbance values and DOC-normalized fluorescence intensities increased. The microbial changes were minimal for the samples contaning humic substances only whereas they were much pronounced for the mixtures with glucose. The extent of the changes increased with a higher content of glucose in the mixtures. The same trend was observed even for glucose solution. Our results suggest that labile organic moieties may be transformed into more chromophoric and humidified components by biodegradation. For the mixture samples, the copper binding stability constants did not change or even decreased after incubation. Therefore, microbially induced enrichment of the fulvic- and humic-like carbon structures in DOM appears to result in little change or the decrease of the copper binding coefficients.
We developed a CASE-II water model that will enable the simulation of remote sensing reflectance($R_{rs}$) at the coastal waters for the retrieval of suspended sediments (SS) concentrations from satellite imagery. The model has six components which are: water, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter (DOM), non-chlorophyllous particles (NC), heterotrophic microorganisms and an unknown component, possibly represented by bubbles or other particulates unrelated to the five first components. We measured $R_{rs}$, concentration of SS and chlorophyll, and absorption of DOM during our field campaigns in Korea. In addition, we generated $R_{rs}$ from different concentrations of SS and chlorophyll, and various absorptions of DOM by random number functions to create a large database to test the model. We assimilated both the computer generated parameters as well as the in-situ measurements in order to reconstruct the reflectance spectra. We validated the model by comparing model-reconstructed spectra with observed spectra. The estimated $R_{rs}$ spectra were used to (1) evaluate the performance of four wavelengths and wavelengths ratios for accurate retrieval of SS. 2) identify the optimum band for SS retrieval, and 3) assess the influence of the SS on the chlorophyll algorithm. The results indicate that single bands at longer wavelengths in visible better results than commonly used channel ratios. The wavelength of 625nm is suggested as a new and optimal wavelength for SS retrieval. Because this wavelength is not available from SeaWiFS, 555nm is offered as an alternative. The presence of SS in coastal areas can lead to overestimation chlorophyll concentrations greater than 20-500%.
There are diverse sea areas within the coverage of GOCI which is observed around the Korea at one-hour intervals. It includes not only very clear ocean of East Sea, but also extremely turbid waters of the Yangtze River estuary. In this study, we analyzed the different optical characteristics of various sea areas using absorption coefficients of phytoplankton, Suspended Particulate Matter(SPM), Dissolved Organic Matter(DOM). Totally 959 sets of bio-optical and marine environmental data were obtained from 2009 to 2014 around the sea area of Korea. The East Sea, South Sea, East China Sea and offshore part of Yellow Sea showed similar pattern having high levels of contribution of phytoplankton and DOM. On the other hands, the coastal part of Mokpo and Gyeonggi Bay showed opposite pattern having high levels of contribution of SPM and DOM. As a result of the algorithm performance for chlorophyll-a(Chl-a) and SPM, Chl-a is mostly overestimated and SPM is mainly tended to be underestimated. Large amount of errors are induced by the SPM rather than the chl-a and DOM. These errors are primarily founded in the coastal waters having relatively high levels of $a_{SPM}$ contribution of more than 60%.
The effects of pH, saturated oxygen, and back-flushing media were investigated in hybrid process of tubular ceramic microfiltration and $TiO_2$ photocatalyst-loaded PES (polyethersulfone) beads for advanced drinking water treatment, and compared results of water, nitrogen, or oxygen back-flushing in the viewpoints of membrane fouling resistance ($R_f$), permeate flux (J) and total treated water ($V_T$). $R_f$ decreased, and J and $V_T$ increased as decreasing pH. Turbidity treatment efficiencies were similar at water or nitrogen back-flushing independent of pH, but DOM (dissolved organic matter) treatment efficiency did not have a trend at water back-flushing. $R_f$ at NBF (no back-flushing) with SO (saturated oxygen) was the lower than that at NBF without SO. Also, the DOM treatment efficiency at NBF with SO was the lower than that at NBF without SO. It happened because OH radicals produced by reaction of SO and photocatalyst could dilute with water inside the module. The DOM treatment efficiency of gas back-flushing showed the larger than that of water back-flushing at back-flushig period 10 min. It proved that the adsorption or photo-oxidation of PES beads could be activated by the more effective bead-cleaning of gas back-flushing than water back-flushing.

In this study, we evaluated the production and photoreactivity of CDOM of two polar phytoplanktons - Phaeocystis antarctica and Phaeocystis pouchetii, in order to find out UV effects on phytoplanktons. In visible region, CDOM in media of both phytoplanktons under UV-R decreased during 48hrs incubation period. However, in UV region CDOM decreased 30 % in the media of P. antarctica, but increased 10% in media of P. pouchetii, compared to CDOM concentrations of control after 48 hr incubation. This result indicates that biota in polar environment would not well protected from UV-R harmful effect when P. antarctica is dominant because of loss of CDOM, but when P. pouchetii is dominant species, production of UV absorbing organic matter could play more efficiently for UV screening for marine biota. Also we confirmed that FDOM of humic substance (C-peak) produced by these phtoplanktons under UV-R stress were well matched with fluorescence characteristics of the UV-protecting compound, MAAs. This finding shows that Phaeocystis pouchetti with low photoreactivity would contribute to DOM pool of polar marine environment under stratification by global warming.

In Korea, many drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) have introduced and are going to introduce biological activated carbon (BAC) process to treated dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water which are difficult to control by conventional water treatment processes. Even though more decade have passed since introduced BAC in Korea, most of BAC operating method was followed to the modified sand filter operating manuals. In case of BAC backwashing, many DWTPs set the periods of backwashing about 3~5 days. In this study, we have collected data to set the proper BAC backwashing periods from both pilot-plant and real DWTPs. We had measured heterotrophic plate count (HPC), turbidity, water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and headloss from just after backwashing to the next backwashing time for two years. Considering water quality factors, the BAC run time from backwashing to the next backwashing could extend more 30 days without water quality deterioration if the head loss do not reach the limited level which depends on each BAC facilities' condition. It means the BAC treated water could be saved in the proportion of extended the backwashing period to the existing backwashing period.
Effects of different molecular size fractions (100,000 nMW-0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$m, 10,000 nMW-100,000 nMW and 1,000 nMW-'L0,000 nMW) of dissolved organic matter on the bacterial numbers and $\beta$-glucosidase activities in Lake Soyang were investigated. Even though the concentrations and characteristics of each fractions were different, bacterial growth curves of each fractioii were Lypical and similar. Each growth curve had highest peak of $1.1{\times}10^{7}$ cells $ml^{-1}$. But, the $\beta$-lucosidase activitics of each fraction were quite different. In high molecular weight fraction (HMW: 100,000 nMW-0.1 $\mu\textrm{m}$m), Vmax of Pglucosidase activity ranged from 550 to 1,160 nmol $1^{-1}$.$hi^{-1}$, but in low molecular weight f~action (1,000 nMW-10,000 nMW), that ranged from 1 to 14 om01 1$^[-1}$${-1}$
For estimation of three inherent optical properties (IOPs), the absorption coefficients for phytoplankton ($a_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($a_{ss}$) and dissolved organic matter ($a_{dom}$), from ocean reflectance, we used inversion of remote sensing reflectance model (Ahn et al., 2001) at this study. The IOP inversion model assumes that (1) the relationship between remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) and absorption (a) and backscattering ($b_{b}$) is well known, (2) the optical coefficients for pure water ($a_{w}$, $b_{bw}$) are known, (3) the spectral shapes of the specific absorption coefficients for phytoplankton ($a^*_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($a^*_{ss}$) and the specific backscattering coefficients for phytoplankton ($b_b^*_{ph}$) and suspended solid particle ($b_b^*_{ss}$) are known. The input data of IOP inversion model is used in-situ ocean optical data at the seawater around the Korea Peninsula for 5 years (2001-2005). We compared the output data of the IOP inversion model and the in-situ observation for seawater around the Korea Peninsula.
