A new biological nutrient removal system combining $A^2/O$ process with fixed film was developed in this work and the characteristics of denitrification were especially investigated in the combined fixed film reactor(CFFR). Media was added in the anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic reactors, respectively. Tests were made to establish the effluent level of $NO_x-N$, COD, DO and nitrite effects on $NO_x-N$ removal in the CFFR by decreasing hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 10.0 to 3.5 hours and by increasing internal recycle ratio form 0% to 200%. The influent was synthesized to levels similar to the average influent of municipal wastewater treatment plants in Korea. SARAN media with a porosity of 96.3% was packed 40% / 130% / 25% based on its reactor volume, respectively. It was found that COD rarely limited dentrification in the anoxic reactor because of high $C/NO_x/-N$ ratio in the anoxic reactor, while DO concentration in the anoxic reactor and $NO_2-N/NO_x/-N$ from the aerobic effluent inhibited denitrification in the anoxic reactor. It was proved that the critical points of DO concentration in the anoxic reactor and $NO_2-N/NO_x/-N$ from the aerobic effluent were 0.15mg/L and 10%, respectively. As the internal recycle ratio increased, DO concentration in the anoxic reactor and $NO_2-N/NO_x/-N$ from the aerobic effluent increased. Especially, at the condition of internal recycle ratio, 200%, DO concentration in the anoxic reactor and $NO_2-N/NO_x/-N$ from the aerobic effluent exceeded the critical points of 0.15mg/L and 10%, respectively. Then, denitrification efficiency considerably decreased. Consequently, it was represented that the control of DO concentration in the anoxic reactor and $NO_2-N/NO_x/-N$ from the aerobic effluent can assure effective denitrification.

This study investigates the behavioral characteristics and forms of phosphorus in the sediment according to the oxygen condition (aerobic/anaerobic). In the behavioral characteristics analysis, Al-P and Fe-P concentrations were the highest among the forms of inorganic phosphorus, and therefore had the strongest impact on sorption and release corresponding to environmental condition changes. In the experimental investigation of the inorganic forms of phosphorus in the sediment according to the oxygen condition, we determined that the forms of inorganic phosphorus did not greatly affect the sorption or release reaction because the distribution ratios of the inorganic forms remained constant corresponding to changes of dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions. In contrast, the forms of organic phosphorus in the sediments affected both sorption and release. Furthermore, labile-P and moderately labile-P forms were the major mechanisms of sorption in sediment. Moderately labile-P was the greatest contributor to phosphorus release action in sediment. As environmental changes are important for the behavioral characteristics of phosphorus in sediment, the forms of phosphorus should be considered to have a greater effect, especially in the organic phosphorus case. Therefore, based on the present study results, sediment evaluation aimed at controlling internal pollutants in reservoirs should include an examination of the forms of phosphorus present, as well as the release characteristics of environmental changes, which are influential factors of phosphorus control. Further research in this field is required.

This study focused on determining the specific causes and prevention methods of mass fish deaths occurred in five reservoirs (Gagugi, Neupgokgi, Danggokgi, Sagokji, and Hangokji) in Andong-si. For this purpose, a survey of agricultural land and livestock in the upper part of the reservoirs and analysis of water quality in the reservoir irrespective of whether it rains or not were conducted. We attempted to examine the changes in dissolved oxygen (DO) in the surface and bottom layers of reservoirs and changes in DO depending on the amount of livestock compost and time. Based on the above investigations, treatment plans were established to efficiently control the inflow of contaminated water into reservoirs. The rainfall and farmland areas in the upper part of the reservoir were investigated using Google and aviation data provided by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. The current status of livestock farms distributed around the reservoirs was also examined because compost from these farms can flow into the reservoir when it rains. Various water quality parameters, such as phosphate phosphorus (PO4-P) and ammonium nitrogen (NH3-N), were analyzed and compared for each reservoir during the rainy season. Changes in the DO concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) were also observed at the inlet of the reservoir during raining using an automated instrument. In addition, DO was measured until the concentration reached 0 ppm in 10 min by adding livestock compost at various concentrations (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by wt.), where the concentration of the livestock compost represents the relative weight of rainwater. The DO concentration in the surface layer of reservoirs was 3.7 to 5.3 ppm, which is sufficient for fish survival. However, the fish could not survive at the bottom layer with DO concentration of 0.0-2.1 ppm. When the livestock compost was 0.3%, DO required 10-19 h to reach 0 ppm. Considering these results, it was confirmed that the DO in the bottom layer of the reservoir could easily change to an anaerobic state within 24 h when the livestock compost in the rainwater exceeds 0.3%. The results show that the direct cause of fish mortality is the inflow of excessive livestock compost into reservoirs during the first rainfall in spring. All the surveyed reservoirs had relatively good topographical features for the inflow of compost generated from livestock farms. This keeps the bottom layer of the reservoir free of oxygen. Therefore, to prevent fish death due to insufficient DO in the reservoir, measures should be undertaken to limit the amount of livestock compost flowing into the reservoir within 0.3%, which has been experimentally determined. As a basic countermeasure, minerals such as limestone, dolomite, and magnesia containing calcium and magnesium should be added to the compost of livestock farms around the reservoir. These minerals have excellent pollutant removal capabilities when sprayed onto the compost. In addition, measures should be taken to prevent fish death according to the characteristics of each reservoir.

Activated sludge processes are widely used in biological wastewater treatment processes. The main motivation of this research is to develop an intelligent control strategy for activated sludge process (ASP). ASP is a complex and nonlinear dynamic system because of the characteristic of wastewater, the change in influent rate, weather conditions, and so on. The mathematical model of ASP also includes uncertainties which are ignored or not considered by process engineer or controller designer. The ASP model based on Matlab/Simulink is designed in this paper. The performance of the model is tested by IWA (International Water Association) and COST (European Cooperation in the filed of Scientific and Technical Research) data that include steady-state results during 14 days. In this paper, fuzzy logic control approach is applied to control the DO (dissolved oxygen) concentration. The fuzzy logic controller that includes two inputs and one output can adjust air flowrate. Also, this paper introduces the remote monitoring and control system that is applied for the CSTR (Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor) wastewater treatment system. The CSTR plant has a local control and the remote monitoring system which is contained communication parts which consist of LAN (Local Area Network) network and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) wireless module. Remote control and monitoring systems are constructed in the laboratory.

This paper describes computational efforts on the various energy and environmental problems using Patankar's SIMPLE method. The specific problems included in this study are : pollutant and flammable material dispersions in open and confined areas, aerator-induced flow in a lake for DO(dissolved oxygen) concentration, primary clarifier for water and waste water treatment, hood ventilation in workplace, cyclone and LNG combustors and Dow chlorination reactor. A control-volume based finite-difference method is employed together with the power-law scheme. The pressure-velocity coupling is resolved by the use of the revised version of SIMPLE, says SIMPLER and SIMPLEC. The Reynolds stresses are closed using the standard or the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ models. Turbulent reaction is modeled using two fast chemistry methods such as eddy breakup and conserved scalar models. Further, a nonequilibrium model is developed for the application of the chlorination process in the Dow reactor. Other important empirical models and physical insights appeared in this study are presented and discussed in a brief note. The computational method developed in this study is considered, in general, as a viable tool for the design and determination of the optimal condition of various engineering system of interest.
Submerged plants whose most of vegetative mass are below the water surface can have great effects on wetland biogeochemistry and water purification through their photosynthesis and nutrient uptake processes. In this study, change of dissolved oxygen concentration and pH as well as nutrient removal capacity of the submerged plant dominant wetland were investigated using wetland mesocosm experiments. Obvious periodic DO and pH fluctuation was observed due to photosynthetic activities of the submerged plants. It implies that the submerged plants can provide periodic or sequential changes of oxic and anoxic conditions that affect nitrification and denitrification processes and contribute permanent nitrogen removal in the wetland system. The pH changes in the wetland mesocosm suggested that submerged plant could also play an important role as a temporary $CO_2$ storage. Higher nutrient removal efficiency was observed in the submerged plant dominant wetland mesocosm. The removal efficiencies under experimental conditions were 38.89, 84.70, 91.21, 70.76, 75.30% of TN, DIN, $NH_4-N$, TP, $PO_4-P$ in the wetland mesocosm, while those were 26.11, 57.34, 63.87, 28.19, 55.15% in the control treatment, respectively.

In this study, the relationship between the growth of abalone and the presence of epibionts was investigated in abalone cultured in Goheung, Jeollanam-do, where there are severe problems high water temperatures and attachment. The experiment was conducted for eight months (May-December 2020), and 40 abalone were collected every month. Water temperature was at its highest at a range of 13.5℃-26.6℃ and dissolved oxygen levels were at their lowest at a range of 4.0-10.2 ㎍/L in August. The shell height (mm) of abalone grew to 117.7% (81.8 ± 1.9 mm) in cultures where epibionts were removed (ER) and 111% (77.4 ± 3.3 mm) where they were not (non-epibionts, NER). Their total weight (TW) and body weight increased significantly and steadily with ER, whereas the TW increased sharply after August with NER. In the condition index, no significant difference was observed between ER and NER. The monthly proportion of epibionts increased significantly in July, accounting for the value of 69.9% reached in December.

As demands for efficient and echo-friendly production of marine products increase, smart aquaculture based on information and communication technology (ICT) has become a promising trend. The smart aquaculture is expected to control fundamental farm environment variables including water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels with less human intervention. A recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) is required for the smart aquaculture which utilizes a purification tank to reuse water drained from the water tank while blocking the external environment. Elaborate water treatment should be considered to properly operate RAS. However, analyzing the water treatment performance is a challenging issue because fish farm circumstance continuously changes and recursively affects water fluidity. To handle this issue, we introduce computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aided water treatment analysis including water fluidity and the solid particles removal efficiency. We adopt RAS parameters widely used in the real aquaculture field to better reflect the real situation. The simulation results provide several indicators for users to check performance metrics when planning to select appropriate RAS without actually using it which costs a lot to operate.
The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of a torrent control structure using customized tetrapods on the forest water quality, fishes, snials and streamwater ecology conservation and management. The study was conducted in the Honggye valley located in Sanchung-gun, Gyungsangnam-do, and stream water quality and streamwater ecology was compared before and during 2 years after construction of torrent control structure. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, pH of stream water didn't get out of the range of River water quality standard class I. After 2 years construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, Dissolved Oxygen concentration didn't change, and Electrical Conductivity measurements agreed well within the range of normal clean stream water quality. After construction of the torrent control structure using customized tetrapods, fishes and snials up and down stream movement didn't influence of the tetrapods dam. Stream water quality during 2 years after construction of the torrent control structure was similar to before construction. Therefore, it was find out that the torrent control structure didn't affect stream water quality and ecology.
Algal blooms have caused problems for drinking water as well as eutrophication. However it is difficult to control algal blooms by current warning manual in rainy season because the algal blooms happen in a few days. The water quality data, which have high correlations with Chlorophyll-a on Daecheongho station, were analyzed and chosen as input data of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for training pattern changes. ANN was applied to early forecasting of algal blooms, and ANN was assessed by forecasting errors. Water temperature, pH and Dissolved oxygen were important factors in the cross correlation analysis. Some water quality items like Total phosphorus and Total nitrogen showed similar pattern to the Chlorophyll-a changes with time lag. ANN model (No. 3), which was calibrated by water temperature, pH and DO data, showed lowest error. The combination of 1 day, 3 days, 7 days forecasting makes outputs more stable. When automatic monitoring data were used for algal bloom forecasting in Daecheong reservoir, ANN model must be trained by just input data which have high correlation with Chlorophyll-a concentration. Modular type model, which is combined with the output of each model, can be effectively used for stable forecasting.
