To evaluate the impact of effluents from land-based fish farms on the coastal ocean of Wando, Korea, we analyzed inorganic nutrients, particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the effluent and influent of land-based fish farms during the summer (July) of 2021. The average concentrations of nutrients (Dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicate; DIN, DIP, and DSi, respectively) in the effluents of this study area were 17±3.7 μM, 1.4±0.7 μM, and 14±1.6 μM, respectively. The average concentrations of POC and DOC were 37±22 μM and 81±13 μM, respectively, with POC accounting for about 30% for total organic carbon in effluents. The Reduced Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen/Total Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen ratio (0.7), potential short-period index, indicates that the discharge of nutrients excreted by the fish and unconsumed feed into coastal water results in such nutrients being deposited and accumulated in the sediment. Subsequently, this continuous accumulation triggers the release of ammonium ions during organic matter decomposition, and the ammonium-enriched waters that encroach on fish farms as influent seem to be due to the diffusion of high concentrations of ammonium from bottom sediment. Furthermore, we used fluorescence indices to examine the characteristics of organic matter sources, obtaining mean values of 1.54±0.19, 1.06±0.06, and 1.56±0.06 for the humification index, biological index, and fluorescence index, respectively, in the effluent. These results indicate that the organic matters had an autochthonous origin that resulted from microbial decomposition, and such organic matters were rapidly generated and removed by biological activity, likely supplied from the sediment. Our results suggest that the effluent from land-based fish farms could be a potential source of deoxygenation occurrence in coastal areas.
In the coarse grain HAZ adjacent to the fusion line, most of the TiN particles in conventional Ti added steel are dissolved and austenite grain growth is easily occurred during welding process. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particle is improved by increasing the nitrogen content in steel. In this study, the effect of hlgh nitrogen TiN particle on preventing austenite grain growth in HAZ was investigated. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing the austenite grain growth by pinning effect. High nitrogen TiN particle in simulated HAZ were not dissolved even at high temperature such as 1400'E and prevented the austenite grain growth in simulated HAZ. Owing to small austenite grain size in HAZ the width of coarse grain HAZ in high nitrogen TiN steel was decreased to 1/10 of conventional TiN steel. Even high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grain HAZ consisted of fine polygonal ferrite and pearlite and toughness of coarse grain HAZ was significantly improved.

The objectives of this research are to remove dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds by using aerated submerged bio-film(ASBF) reactors in batch systems and improve understanding of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds removal rates with dynamic relationships between heterotrophic and autotrophic bacteria in the fixed-film reactor. This research explores the possibility of enhancing the performance of shallow wastewater treatment lagoons through the addition of specially designed structures. These structures are designed to encourage the growth of a nitrifying bacterial bio-film on a submerged surface. Specially, the effects of cold temperatures on the dissolved organic matter and ammonia nitrogen performance of the ASBF pilot plant was investigated for the batch system. It is anticipated thai the ASBF would be used for a design of biological treatment for removing of dissolved organic matter and nitrogen compounds in new wastewater treatment plants as well as existing wastewater treatment plants.

Sediment, aquifer materials, surface water, and groundwater from brackish Songji lake affected by salinity of seawater, were collected and a pilot scale column experiment was conducted to simulate the nitrogen transport through the hyporheic zone. Upstream experiments of groundwater displayed that groundwater containing a small amount of salt percolated into aquifers and sediments, maintaining low dissolved oxygen concentrations. In addition, partial denitrification occurred in the aquifer due to salinity and low dissolved oxygen, resulting in the accumulation of NO2-. In sediments, nitrogenous compounds were reduced due to adsorption by long residence times or microbial-mediated oxidation/reduction reactions. Downstream experiments of surface water displayed that surface water from the brackish lake, containing high concentrations of dissolved oxygen and salts, infiltrated into the sediments and aquifer, supplying high dissolved oxygen concentrations. This resulted in biological nitrification in the sediments and aquifer, which reduced nitrogen-based pollutants despite the high salt concentration in the surface water. Whereas partial denitrification at low dissolved oxygen concentrations in the upwelling mixing zone was observed by salinity and accumulated NO2-, nitrification at high dissolved oxygen concentrations in the downwelling mixing zone was not significantly affected by salinity. These results confirm that salinity in the brackish water lake has some influence on the nitrogen behavior of the hyporheic mixing zone, although nitrogen behavior is a complex combination of factors such as DO, pH, substrate concentration, and organic matter concentration.

We investigated the interspecific competition between the harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides and diatom Skeletonema sp. based on the utilization and uptake of dissolved organic nutrients. C. polykrikoides and S. costatum were able to grow using dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). This result indicates that the utilization of dissolved organic nutrients may play a role in surviving strategy in the DIN or DIP-limited environments. The half-saturation constants (Ks) of urea and glycerophosphate (glycero-P) calculated from uptake kinetics experiment of C. polykrikoides was lower than those of Skeletonema sp. This result indicates that Skeletonema sp. have higher affinity for dissolved organic nutrients, such as urea and glycero-P, than C. polykrikoides. Although Skeletonema sp. have higher affinity of dissolved organic nutrients, C. polykrikoides could effectively uptake for urea and glycero-P at sub-saturating nutrient concentrations (${\alpha}$ (${\rho}_{max}/Ks$) of C. polykrikoides was higher than Skeletonema sp.. Therefore, C. polykrikoides by utilization and effectively uptake of dissolved organic nutrients under monoculture may have an advantageous position in the interspecific competition with Skeletonema sp. in the low nutrient environments.
Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), dissolved organic phosphate (DOP), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) were measured in the coastal sea off inland aqua farms in northeastern Jeju Island in summer 2015. The highest concentrations of DOC, DON, and DOP were revealed in the surface water off Hado-ri where the lowest salinity conditions prevailed (31.6). The concentrations of DOC, DON, and DOP in the surface water were lower in the inner stations (SH1-1, 1-2, and 1-3) near the aqua farms of the Haengwon-ri than in the outer stations. The concentrations of DOC, DON, and DOP negatively correlated with salinity. These results indicate that the contribution of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the aqua farms seems to be not significant. On the other hand, the higher concentrations of DON and DOP in the inner stations of Hado-ri (HD 1-1) seem to be attributed to excrement of migrating birds. The three components of CDOM (T, M, and C peaks) showed no relationship with salinity, perhaps due to various in situ productions by marine organisms and decomposition by ultraviolet radiation. The observed lower C:M ratio, an indicator of terrestrial source, and the higher biological index (BIX) of CDOM in the station off Hado-ri indicate that DOM is produced mainly by biological activity. Based on the higher humification index (HIX) of CDOM and the higher DOC:DON ratio off Haengwon-ri, refractory DOM in the inland aqua farms is likely transported to the coastal sea.

Changes in concentrations of dissolved oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, pH, Fe and Mn were monitored from the laboratory incubation of an benthic chamber. The extent of sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen decomposition was quantified by applying the concentration data to the chemical reaction equations of early diagenesis. The patterns of the concentration changes, observed during the 237 hr long incubation experiment, made it possible to divide the entire experiment period into four characteristic sub-periods (0-9 hr, 9-45 hr, 45-141hr, 141-237 hr). C/N ratio, estimated for each sub-period, was 6.63, 1.49, 0.81 and 0.02, respectively. This sequential decrease in C/N ratio suggests that during the incubation experiment dissolved nitrogen species diffuse more out of the sediment than dissolved carbon species. Greater diffusion of nitrogen indicates the preferential decomposition of organic nitrogen during early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter. Comparison of the concentration data (sedimentary organic carbon and nitrogen, porewater organic carbon and ammonia)between the sediment pre and post incubation also indicates the preferential decomposition of nitrogen during early diagenesis of sedimentary organic matter.

Nitrogen pollution in urban and rural groundwater is a common problem and poses a major threat to drinking water supplies based on groundwater. In this work, the kinetics of nitrification-denitrification coupled reactions are modeled and new reaction modules for the RT3D code (Clement, 1997) describing the fate and transport nitrogen species, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and biomass are developed. The proposed nitrogen transformations and transport model showed very good match with results of a conceptual model. However, the model simulation results for the major reactive species should be tested for validation using experimental and field data.

The bioavailability of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) by dominant species Chaetoceros debilis and Leptocylindrus danicus under dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN)-limited condition in the southwestern East Sea was conducted to assess the quantitative evaluation using growth kinetic experiment. Nitrogen sources were nitrate and ammonium as DIN, glycine and urea, which is portion component of DON in East Sea. Maximum specific growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) and half-saturation constant ($K_s$) of C. debilis calculated from Monod equations were estimated to be $1.50day^{-1}$ and $1.62{\mu}M$ in nitrate, $1.13day^{-1}$ and $6.97{\mu}M$ in ammonium, $1.46day^{-1}$ and $3.36{\mu}M$ in glycine, $0.93day^{-1}$ and $0.55{\mu}M$ in urea, respectively. Also, L. danics was estimated to be $1.55day^{-1}$ and $5.21{\mu}M$ in nitrate, $1.57day^{-1}$ and $4.57{\mu}M$ in ammonium, $1.47day^{-1}$ and $3.80{\mu}M$ in glycine, $1.42day^{-1}$ and $1.94{\mu}M$ in urea, respectively. Both C. debilis and L. dancius have higher affinity of urea than DIN. The high affinity of urea was indicated that the dominant species were able to growth using urea under DIN-limited conditions. Thus, DON utilization of phytoplankton may be one of the important dominant strategy under DIN-limited environments such as southwestern East Sea.
As a case hardening process for stainless steels, nitriding is more preferred and widely used than carburizing which deterioates corrosion resistance severely. In order to add the nitrogen into the stainless steels, passive film on the surface must be removed effectively before nitriding. Conventional gas nitriding process is performed in the temperature range of 500 to $600^{\circ}C$ with $NH_3$ gas, which often leads to sensitization of stainless steels. In this study, we tried to activate passive film of austenitic stainless steels by heating at low pressure. ($900^{\circ}C$, $5{\times}10^{-2}$ Torr.) Nitriding was performed at the solution treatment temperature of $1100^{\circ}C$ with nitrogen molecules instead of $NH_3$ gas. An attainable nitrogen content in a case depends on the nitrogen gas pressure at constant nitriding temperature. A case depth is proportional to the square root of solution time, which suggests that inward diffusion of nitrogen follows the Fick's 2nd law. Surface nitrogen atoms are dissolved as interstitial solutes, or precipitated in the form of MN, $M_2N$ nitrides, which increase the case hardeness. Dissolved nitrogen in the case enhances the cavitation resistance of austenitic stainless steels dramatically.
