  • The process equipment and remote handling for the deep geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste(HLW) should be checked prior to the operation in view of reliability and operability. In this study, the concept of virtual environment workcell is implemented to analyze and define the feasible disposal process instead of real mock-up, which is very expensive and time consuming. To do this, the parts of process equipment for the disposal and maintenance will be modeled in 3-D graphics, assembled, and kinematics will be assigned. Also, the virtual workcell for the encapsulation and disposal process of spent fuel will be implemented in the graphical environment, which is the same as the real environment. This virtual workcell will have the several functions for verification such as analyses for the equipment's work space, the collision detection, the path planning and graphic simulation of the processes etc. This graphic virtual workcell of the HLW disposal process can be effectively used in designing of the processes for the hot cell equipment and enhance the reliability of the spent fuel management.

  • Spent nuclear fuels are regarded as a high level radioactive waste and they will be disposed in a deep geological repository. To maintain the safety of the repository for hundreds of thousands of years, the spent fuels are encapsulated in a disposal canister and the canister containing spent fuels should have the structural integrity and the corrosion resistance below the several hundreds meters from the ground surface. In this study, the concept of the spent fuel encapsulation process and the process equipment fur deep geological disposal were established. To do this, the design requirements, such as the functions and the spent fuel accumulations, were reviewed. Also, the design principles and the bases were established. Based on the requirements and the bases, the encapsulation process and the equipment from spent fuel receiving process to transferring canister into the underground repository including hot cell processes was established. The established concept of the spent fuel encapsulation process and the process equipment will be improved continuously with the future studies. And this concept can be effectively used in implementing the reference repository system of our own case.

  • The dryer (ten per unit) are operating to remove tritium in PHWR(Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor). There are coming out heavy water adsorbent from operating the dryer (95 drums for ten year per unit) The amount of radioactivity of heavy water adsorbent almost exceed ninety times more than disposal limit-in-itself showed by The Ministry of Science and Technology. It has to be disposed whole radioactive waste products, however there are problems of increase at the expense of their permanent disposal. In this research, We have studied how to remove kinds of nuclear materials and amount of tritium with in heavy water adsorbent. As the result we could develop disposal equipment and apply it. D20 adsorbent have to contain below Gamma nuclide O.3Bq/g and tritium 100Bq/g "The Regulation for disposal of the radioactivity wastes" showed by The Ministry of Science and Technology. There fore. So as to remove amount of tritium and kinds of nuclear materials (DTO) we needed a equipment. Also we have studied how to remove effectively radioactivity with in Adsorbent. As cleaning heavy water adsorbent and drying on each condition (temperature for drying and hours for cleaning). Because there is something to return heavy water adsorbent by removing impurities within adsorbent when it is dried o high temperature. After operating, we have been applying this research to the way to dispose heavy water adsorbent. Through this we could reduce solid waste products and the expense of permanent disposal of radioactive waste products and also we could contribute nuclear power plant run safely. According to the result we could keep the best condition of radiation safety super vision and we could help people believe in safety with Radioactivity wastes control for harmony with Environment.

  • The permeability characterization on the natural barrier for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste is very critical to evaluate total safety and performance assessment of disposal site. However, the confidence level in using previous hydraulic testing equipments consist of simple components to estimate rock mass permeability is not high enough to reflect in situ condition. The purpose of this research is to establish an advanced hydraulic testing equipment, which is applicable to deep borehole (up to 1,000 m), through the improvement of technical problems of previous packer systems. Especially, the straddle packer hydraulic testing equipment was designed to adopt both the hydraulic downhole shut-in valve(H-DHSIV) to minimize the wellbore storage effect and the real time data acquisition system to measure the pressure changes of test interval including its upper and lower parts. The results from this research lead to not only improve current technical level in the field of hydraulic testing but also provide important information to radioactive waste disposal technology development and site characterization project.

  • This study is conducted about the system that reduces organism after fermenting food waste from a food waste disposal equipment, divides gas made when food waste is fermented into gas and water, and then sends gas to a reactor again, condenses water, and apply it to the MBR system with submerged MF hollow fiber membranes. A submerged MF hollow fiber membrane module was installed to a food waste disposal equipment and a water treatment system made by Bio Hitech Co,. Ltd. to process food waste generated from a staff cafeteria in a H institute for 90 days. For initial seeding of a food waste disposal equipment, 305 kg of rice bran, chaff, and sawdust as well as 1,648 kg of food were input during the operation, and 1,600 L of condensed wastewater occurred. Fermented by-product after finishing running a food waste disposal equipment was 386 kg and its reduction was shown to be 80%. The organism was processed by applying submerged MF hollow fiber membrane module to the MBR system of condensed wastewater, and the result shows reduction rates were BOD 99.9%, COD 97.5%, SS 98.6%, T-N 54.6% and T-P 34.7% and the total colon bacillus was perfectly eliminated.

  • Spent filters with a high radiation dose rate of 2 mSv·hr-1 or more are not easily managed. So far, the Korean policy for spent filter disposal is to store them temporarily at nuclear power plants until the waste filters can be easily managed. Nuclear power plant decommissioning in Korea is starting with Kori unit 1. Volume reduction of waste generated during decommissioning can reduce the cost and optimize the space usage at disposal site. Therefore, efficient volume reduction is a very important factor during the decommissioning process. A conceptual method, based on the experiences of developing 200 and 800 ton compactors at Orion EnC, has been developed considering worker exposure with the followings a crusher (upgrade of compaction efficiency), an automatic dose measuring system with a NaI(Tl) detector, a shield box, an inner drum to prepare for easy handling of drums and packaging, a 30 ton compactor, and an automatic robot system. This system achieves a volume reduction ratio of up to 85.7%; hence, the system can reduce the disposal cost and waste volume. It can be applied to other types of wastes that are not easily managed due to high dose rates and remote control operation necessity.

  • In this paper, the ventilation efficiencies of an underground sewage disposal plant were investigated for ventilating system without fan, ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans and ventilating system with sixteen cross flow fans by numerical method. It has been found that the air change effectiveness of the system without fan was predicted 0.44. It means that an additional ventilating equipment is needed to maintain good indoor air quality. For the ventilating system with sixteen cross flow fans, the air change effectiveness was predicted 0.55. The air change effectiveness of the ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans was predicted 0.51. It is known that the air change effectiveness above 0.5 is enough to eliminate pollutant and bad smell in the indoor. Therefore, it is recommended to select the ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans for the underground sewage disposal plant in an economic point of view.

  • The present problems concerning the control of generation, storage, collection, transfer and transport, processing and disposal of the municipal waste are serious. And the transportation of the municipal waste is recently a important part of solid waste treatment and disposal. The waste pneumatic transportation system is expected to be an effective method for use in solving that problems. In this study, pneumatic transportation system was applied to 2,000-5,000 households of public/group housing for economic and technical analysis on the basis of data for working and operation. The proper equipment must be selected through economic and technical analysis for generation and properties of waste because the equipment in facilities of system is various. And the efficient operation method should be studied on the basis of information on the record of oeration. As the wet food waste clogs the pipeline, it is necessary to examine under the actual condition. The maximum unit waste generation rate based on the assumption that each household is comprised of 3.20 people is determined $2,340g/household{\cdot}day$, and it is included the 50% increase of seasonal and daily change.

  • Since improper management practices of solid medical waste (SMW) could potentially result in serious health risks and environmental problems, it is very important to properly treat and dispose of the medical wastes. In this study, current practices of SMW management from storage to final disposal stage in 12 health care facilities (HCFs) of Burundi were investigated using the official government reports. The results showed that 75% and 92% of HCFs used uncovered wheelbarrows and trucks for on-site or off-site SMW transportation, respectively, indicating that most transportation equipment and waste workers are not safely protected. The results also showed that 92.8% of SMW (15,736.4 ton) from all 12 HCFs were inappropriately disposed of through uncontrolled land disposal and incineration. If pharmaceutical wastes and discarded medical plastics (29.5% of SMW) can be separated and treated properly, the treatment costs can be reduced and resource savings can be achieved. Raising awareness of healthcare workers and general public about potential health effects arising from improper SMW management, sufficient financial and human resources for the treatment facilities (especially incinerators), and effective regulations and guidelines for transportation and treatment of SWM are some of the major tasks for safe and sustainable medical waste management in Burundi.
