  • Based on continuum mechanics and the principle of virtual displacements, incremental total Lagrangian formulation (T.L.) and incremental updated Lagrangian formulation (U.L.) were presented. Both T.L. and U.L. considered the large displacement stiffness matrix, which was modified to be symmetrical matrix. According to the incremental updated Lagrangian formulation, small strain, large displacement, finite rotation of three dimensional Timoshenko fiber beam element tangent stiffness matrix was developed. Considering large displacement and finite rotation, a new type of tangent stiffness matrix of the beam element was developed. According to the basic assumption of plane section, the displacement field of an arbitrary fiber was presented in terms of nodal displacement of centroid of cross-area. In addition, shear deformation effect was taken account. Furthermore, a nonlinear finite element method program has been developed and several examples were tested to demonstrate the accuracy and generality of the three dimensional beam element.

  • A method to predict the strain responses from the measurements of displacement responses is considered. The method uses a transformation matrix which is composed of a displacement modal matrix and a strain modal matrix. The method can predict strains at points where displacements are not measured as well as at displacement measuring points. One of the drawbacks of the strain prediction method is that the displacement responses must be measured at many points on a structure simultaneously. This difficulty can be overcome by measuring the FRFs between displacements at a reference point and other point in sequence with a two channel measuring equipment This procedure is based on the assumption that the characteristics of excitation applied to the structure do not vary with time.

  • Presented is a method to predict strain responses from displacement measurements on a mechanical structure. The method consists of forming a transformation matrix, which is calculated from displacement and strain modal matrices. The modal matrices can be obtained by either finite element analysis or modal testing. One disadvantage of the method is that it requires displacements on all measuring points be measured simultaneously. The strain prediction method is applied to a simple simulated system.

  • A previously proposed finite element formulation method is refined and modified to generate a new type of elements. The method is based on selecting a set of general solution modes for element formulation. The constant strain modes and higher order modes are selected and the formulation method is designed to ensure that the element will pass the basic single element test, which in turn ensures the passage of the basic patch test. If the element is to pass the higher order patch test also, the element stiffness matrix is in general asymmetric. The element stiffness matrix depends only on a nodal displacement matrix and a nodal force matrix. A symmetric stiffness matrix can be obtained by either modifying the nodal displacement matrix or the nodal force matrix. It is shown that both modifications lead to the same new element, which is demonstrated through numerical examples to be more robust than an assumed stress hybrid element in plane stress application. The method of formulation can also be used to arrive at the conforming displacement and hybrid stress formulations. The convergence of the latter two is explained from the point of view of the proposed method.

  • A static linear programming formulation for minimum weight design of frames that is based on a matrix displacement method is presented in this paper. According to elementary theory of plasticity, minimum weight design of frames can be carried out by using only the equilibrium equations, because the system is statically determinate when at an incipient collapse state. In the present formulation, a statically determinate released frame is defined by introducing hinges into the real frame and the bending moments in yield constraints are expressed in terms of unit hinge rotations and the external loads respectively, by utilizing the matrix displacement method. Conventional Simplex algorithm with some modifications is utilized for the solution of linear programming problem. As the formulation is based on matrix displacement method, it may be easily adopted to the weight optimization of frames with displacement and deformation limitations. Four illustrative examples are also given for comparing the results to those obtained in previous studies.

  • In this paper, with use of the displacement matrix, two special matrices are constructed. By these special matrices the block decompositions of the block symmetric Hankel matrix and the inverse of the Hankel matrix are derived. Hence, the algorithms according to these decompositions are given. Furthermore, the numerical tests show that the algorithms are feasible.

  • A procedure to analyse the space frame structure fixed at base as well as resting on sliding bearing using total or absolute displacement in dynamic equation is developed. In the present method, the effect of ground acceleration is not considered as equivalent force. Instead, the ground acceleration is considered as a known value in the acceleration vector at degree of freedom corresponding to base of the structure when the structure is in non-sliding phase. When the structure is in sliding phase, only a force equal to the maximum frictional resistance is applied at base. Also, in this method, the stiffness matrix, mass matrix and the damping matrix will not change when the structure enters from one phase to another. The results obtained from the present method using absolute displacement approach are compared with the results obtained from the analysis of structure using relative displacement approach. The applicability of the analysis is also demonstrated to obtain the response of the structure resting on sliding bearing with restoring force device.

  • When the operational strains of a structure can not be directly measured in order to predict the life of the structure due to the problem of the attachment, those must be obtained indirectly. Since the displacement and the strain are interrelated, the strain can be predicted from the measured displacement and displacement-strain transformation matrix. The transformation matrix is dependent on the boundary condition, unfortunately, and it is also difficult to know exactly that of the operational system. In this study, for the structure with arbitrary boundary condition under the operation, the approximate method is proposed in order to predict the operational strains using the transformation matrix obtained by using free boundary conditions. And the method is applied to predict the strains of leads of surface mount component under the vibration of the printed circuit board.

  • For the spatially coupled free vibration analysis of composite box beams resting on elastic foundation under the axial force, the exact solutions are presented by using the power series method based on the homogeneous form of simultaneous ordinary differential equations. The general vibrational theory for the composite box beam with arbitrary lamination is developed by introducing Vlasov°Øs assumption. Next, the equations of motion and force-displacement relationships are derived from the energy principle and explicit expressions for displacement parameters are presented based on power series expansions of displacement components. Finally, the dynamic stiffness matrix is calculated using force-displacement relationships. In addition, the finite element model based on the classical Hermitian interpolation polynomial is presented. To show the performances of the proposed dynamic stiffness matrix of composite box beam, the numerical solutions are presented and compared with the finite element solutions using the Hermitian beam elements and the results from other researchers. Particularly, the effects of the fiber orientation, the axial force, the elastic foundation, and the boundary condition on the vibrational behavior of composite box beam are investigated parametrically. Also the emphasis is given in showing the phenomenon of vibration mode change.

  • Derivation procedures of exact elastic element stiffness matrix of thin-walled curved beams are rigorously presented for the static analysis. An exact elastic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of displacement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relationships. The displacement and normal stress of the section are evaluated and compared with thin-walled straight and curved beam element or results of the analysis using shell elements for the thin-walled curved beam structure in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.
