  • Modal properties of guided waves along circular dispersive double negative (DNG) index metamaterial rod waveguides are numerically investigated. Identical forms of dispersive dielectric and magnetic material constants are used for simplicity. For degenerated azimuthally symmetric mode, a multimode region, a single mode region, a band gap region and a forbidden region are found which cannot be observed in the case of the conventional dielectric rod waveguide. As the normalized frequency goes down, discrete guided modes are continuously generated, which is a reverse property of conventional dielectric rod waveguide. Also, there are high-frequency cutoffs, which have been generally examined in dispersive circular geometries such as a plasma column or a plasma Goubau line. In the single mode region, both the low- and high-frequency cutoffs are existed where the propagation constants are continued between the guided oscillating and surface modes.

  • The effects of high frequency noises on a perturbational inversion technique for a stratified dispersive medium are investigated in this paper. It is shown that the perturbational solution becomes unstable under high frequency noises. The physical origin of this instability is described. In order to enhance the robustness of the perturbational inverse scattering solution, a parametric inversion technique is introduced. The examples for the 2-pole and the 3-pole reflection coefficients are compared and contrasted, and improvement of the robustness of the solutions is shown.

  • The plate waves propagating in thin plates have dispersive nature showing the dependence of velocities on the frequency. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function can be used to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves propagating in the plate. Plate waves in the aluminum plate of 3 mm thickness were identified and generated by pencil lead breaks and the lowest order symmetric ($S_o$) and antisymmetric ($A_o$) modes were analyzed by the WT method. The measured group velocities agreed very well with theoretical predictions in the frequency range of 50-400 kHz. The pencil breaks were also used to simulate acoustic emission sources in the plate, and the source location algorithm using the wavelet transform of dispersive plate waves was found to give accurate results.

  • A time-frequency analysis method was developed to analyze the dispersive waves caused by impact loads in structural members such as beams and plates. Stress waves generated by ball drop and pencil lead break were recorded by ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission (AE) sensors. Wavelet transform (WT) using Gabor function was employed to analyze the dispersive waves in the time-frequency domain, and then to find the arrival time of the waves as a function of frequency. The measured group velocities in the beam and the plate were compared with the predictions based on the Timoshenko beam theory and Rayleigh-Lamb frequency equations, respectively. The agreements were found to be very good.

  • In this paper, the higher order FDTD(Finite-Difference Time-Domain) method is used to obtain the frequency response characteristics of the cylindrical metamaterial slab. FDTD method is one of strongest electromagnetic numerical method which is widely used to analyze the metamaterial structure because of its simplicity and the dispersive FDTD equation which has the dispersive effective dielectric constant and permeability are derived to analyze the metamaterials. This derived dispersive FDTD equation has no errors in analyzing the dielectric materials but there are some time and frequency errors in case of analyzing the metamaterials. We used the higher order FDTD method to obtain the accurate frequency response of the metamaterials. Comparisons between the dispersive FDTD method and the higher order FDTD method are performed in this paper also. From the results, we concluded that more accurate frequency response for various metamaterials applications can be obtained using the proposed method in this paper.

  • Time reversal (TR) of nondispersive body waves has been used in many applications including ultrasonic NDE. However, the study of the TR method for Lamb waves on thin structures is not well established. In this paper, the full reconstruction of the input signal is investigated for dispersive Lamb waves by introducing a time reversal operator based on the Mindlin plate theory. A broadband and a narrowband input waveform are employed to reconstruct the $A_0$ mode of Lamb wave propagations. Due to the frequency dependence of the TR process of Lamb waves, different frequency components of the broadband excitation are scaled differently during the time reversal process and the original input signal cannot be fully restored. This is the primary reason for using a narrowband excitation to enhance the flaw detectability.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) transmits high-speed data by splitting the transmission bandwidth into a number of subcarriers. The bandwidth of each subcarrier is ensured to be smaller than the coherence bandwidth. This paper presents an OFDM system incorporated with the Carrier Interferometry (CI) codes to improve the performance by enhancing frequency diversity effect. The performances of CI-OFDM with multilevel modulations are investigated in highly dispersive fading channels. For the investigation of performance improvement of CI-OFDM, a simulator has been developed using a well-known SPW simulation platform. The simulation results show that the CI-OFDM provides both performance improvement and robustness against dispersive fading channel behavior. The performance of CI-OFBM with multilevel modulations demonstrates that CI-OFDM outperforms a traditional OFDM system, particularly in highly dispersive channels. With a relatively large delay spread of 151㎱ compared to the guard interval of 800㎱, CI-OFDM provides a BER of 10$^{-3}$ if sufficient signal power is present.

  • Doppler-free circular polarization spectroscopy in 87Rb Dz line has been carried out by using a diode laser whose linewidth was narrowed by an external cavity, and experimental results were compared with an optical pumping polarization spectroscopy theory. A dispersive spectrum obtained in a weak pump beam was completely fitted to a single cycle optical pumping theory. The laser frequency was locked to a Rb atomic hyperfine transition line without any frequency modulation by using the dispersive curve as an error signal. ignal.

  • The multi-band receiving feed which is one of the unique characteristics of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) system compare to the other VLBI network enables to study precise astrometry with a source frequency phase referencing (SFPR) techniques. SFPR almost perfectly compensates the dominant non-dispersive tropospheric fluctuations by observing sources with multi-frequency simultaneously, and it also corrects the dispersive ionospheric fluctuations by adding a slow source-switching observation. In this talk, I will present the results from the KVN astrometric observations with SFPR and the achievable astrometric accuracy in KVN will be discussed.

  • In this paper, we review a trellis-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplex (TC-OFDM) system, which combines OFDM with trellis-coded modulation, for overcoming the frequency selective and multipath fading of time dispersive channels. We simulate and analyse the BER performance of rate 2/3 trellis coded 8DPSK-OFDM over time dispersive channels. Design of the trellis codes at different carrier numbers of OFDM is discussed. Results show that TC-OFDM system can provide 6 dB coding gain at a BER of 10$^{-3}$ compared with OFDM system without coding.
