Diffusion and dispersion of injected $CO_2$gas into the $N_2$ gas flow are complex. In the packed column with porous particles the axial dispersion and the extra-particle mass transport as well as the intra-particle mass transport are involved. The pulse spreads by stationary diffusion during the period of arrested flow. Hence, the effect of axial dispersion, and of entrance and exit, as well as that of intraparticle convection should be eliminated during the period. The effective diffusivity was determined experimentally by using the gas chromatography, which is to arrest the gas flow during the period after injecting the pulse. This experiment method hasn't been used often in the field. Effective diffusivities are raised with temperature increasing, and it is quite satisfied com-pared to literature values. In this study, the calculated data of gaseous chemical for extinguish fires could be helpful to appreciate several physical phenomenons. Also, it could be expected that, the calculated data of this study might be very useful for development of excellent gaseous chemical for extinguish fires and improvement of its efficiency.
It has been reported that vasopressin disperse the melanophore granule of frog skin. The author used hypophysectomized and adrenergic receptor blockaded animals in order to define the mechanism of vasopressin on the melanopore pigment of frog skin. The Rana niglomaculata which could be found in the Seoul area were used on this experiment. The amount of the following drugs were injected into the lymphatic sac of the frog; vaospressin $(0.05\;{\mu}g/g\;B.W.)$, dibenzylin $(0.05\;{\mu}g/g\;B.W.)$, and propranolol $(0.01\;{\mu}g/g\;B.W.)$. The following results were observed; 1. Vasopressin dispersed the melanin granules of melanocyte of frog skin. 2. The melanin granule dispersion activity of vasopressin was observed on the hypophysectomized frog. 3. The melanin granule dispersion was observed on the adrenergic receptor blockaded frog with dibenzylin or propranolol respectively, especially the later one was found to be more obvious. 4. The melanin granule dispersion was observed on the frog which was injected with vasopressin after alpha-receptor or beta-receptor blockade and the later one was found to be more obvious. 5. The melanin granule dispersion was more effective with the blockade of beta-receptor after the treatment with vasopressin on hypophysectomized frog.
An experimental study has been carried out using a rotating water channel in order to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the vertical dispersion of plume within boundary layer. Dispersion measurements of tracers released from two sources with different height at neutral conditions over various rough terrain ranging from rural to urban have been performed. Various values of roughness length were simulated by combining of 4 stream velocities and 3 roughness element conditions. Dispersion measurements have also been made for rough terrain where high buildings are locally concentrated. Values of $\sigma$z increase with roughness and this tendency appears to apply both cases of with and without locally concentrated high buildings. The comparisons of the Bowne's nomogram on $\sigma$2 vs x relationship and the measurements of $\sigma$2 with roughness show good accordance in $\sigma$2 distribution at stability D class over rural, suburban and urban terrain. For constant roughness length the $\sigma$2 values of plumes from lower source height are smaller than those of plumes from higher source at short downwind distance, but this relationship becomes reverse as distance increases. Crossing appears to be made before about 2km. The value of constant I in McMullen's equation $\sigma$2=exp [I+J(In x) + K(In x)2] appears to increase with roughness length, however, the relationships between other constants and roughness have been confirmed. The values of $\sigma$2 for various downwind distances, estimated by using an equation which is employed in ISC (Industrial Source Complex) dispersion model for areas where high buildings are locally assembled, are in accordance with measurements from water channel experiments.
Lots of orders of special vessels and offshore plants for developing the resources in deepwater have been increased in recent. Because the most of accidents on those structures are caused by fire and explosion, many researchers have been investigated quantitatively to predict the cause and effect of fire and explosion based on both experiments and numerical simulations. The first step of the evaluation procedures leading to fire and explosion is to predict the dispersion of flammable or toxic material, in which the released material mixes with surrounding air and be diluted. In particular turbulent mixing, but density differences due to molecular weight or temperature as well as diffusion will contribute to the mixing. In the present paper, the numerical simulation of hydrogen dispersion inside a simple-shaped offshore structure was performed using a commercial CFD program, ANSYS-CFX. The simulated results for concentration of released hydrogen are compared to those of experiment and other simulation in Jordan et al.(2007). As a result, it is seen that the present simulation results are closer to the experiments than other simulation ones. Also it seems that the hydrogen dispersion is closely related to turbulent mixing and the selection of the turbulence model properly is significantly of importance to the reproduction of dispersion phenomena.
The objective of this study is to investigate numerically the effect of building roof shaps on wind flow and pollutant dispersion in a street canyon with one row of trees of pore volume, $P_{vol}=96%$. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to evaluate air flow and pollutant dispersion within an urban street canyon using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM) based on k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to close the equation system. The numerical model is performed with ANSYS-CFX code. Vehicle emissions were simulated as double line sources along the street. The numerical model was validated by the wind tunnel experiment results. Having established this, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons (with six roof shapes buildings) are simulated. The numerical simulation results agree reasonably with the wind tunnel data. The results obtained in this work, indicate that the flow in 3D domain is more complicated; this complexity is increased with the presence of trees and variability of the roof shapes. The results also indicated that the largest pollutant concentration level for two walls (leeward and windward wall) is observed with the upwind wedge-shaped roof. But the smallest pollutant concentration level is observed with the dome roof-shaped.
In this study, street canyons with a higher downwind building (so called, step-up street canyons) are considered for understanding characteristics of flow and reactive pollutants' dispersion as a basic step to understand the characteristics in wider urban areas. This study used a CFD_NIMR_SNU coupled to a chemistry module just including simple $NO_X-O_3$ photochemical reactions. First, flow characteristics are analyzed in step-up street canyons with four aspect ratios (0.33, 0.47, 0.6, 0.73) defined as ratios of upwind building heights to downwind building height. The CFD_NIMR_SNU reproduced very well the main features (that is, vortices in the street canyons) which appeared in the wind-tunnel experiment. Wind speed within the street canyons became weak as the aspect ratio increased, because volume of flow incoming over the upwind building decreased. For each step-up street canyon, chemistry transport model was integrated up to 3600 s with the time step of 0.5 s. The distribution patterns of $NO_X$ and $O_3$ were largely dependent on the mean flow patterns, however, $NO_X$ and $O_3$ concentrations were partly affected by photochemical reactions. $O_3$ concentration near the upwind lower region of the street canyons was much lower than background concentration, because there was much reduction in $O_3$ concentration due to NO titration there. Total amount of $NO_X$ in the street canyons increased with the aspect ratio, resulting from the decrease of mean wind intensity.
One of the recent safety issues in the pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR) is the cracking of the feeder pipe. Because of the limited accessibility to the cracked region and a high dose of radiation exposure, it is difficult to inspect all the pipes with the conventional ultrasonic method. In order to solve this problem, a long-range guided wave technique has been developed. A computer program to calculate the dispersion curves in the pipe was developed and the dispersion curves for the feeder pipes in PHWR plants were determined. Several longitudinal and/or flexural modes were selected from the review of the dispersion curves and an actual experiment has been carried out with the specific alignment of the piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers. They were confirmed as L(0,1)) and/or flexural modes(F(m,2)) by the short time Fourier transformation(STFT) and were sensitive to the circumferential cracks, but not to the axial cracks in the pipe. An electromagnetic acoustic transducers(EMAT) was designed and fabricated for the generation and reception of the torsional guided wave. The axial cracks were detected by a torsional mode(T(0,1)) generated by the EMAT.

Computations of the mean and turbulence flows over three-dimensional hill of conical shape have implemented. Beside the standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ , two other modifications proposed by Detering & Etling and Duynkerke for atmospheric applications were also considered. These predictions were compared with the data of a wind tunnel experiment. From the comparison, it was concluded that all three models predict the mean flow velocities equally well while only the Duynkerke's model accurately predicts the turbulence data statistics. It also concluded that there are large discrepancies between model predictions and the measurements near the ground surface. The flow field, which was obtained by using the Duynkerke's modification, was used to simulate gas dispersion from an upwind source. The calculation results are verified based on the measurement data. Modifications of the turbulent Schmidt number were carried out in order to match the measured results. The code was used to investigate the influence of the recirculation zone behind a building of cubical shape on the transport and dispersion of pollutant. For a stack behind and near the obstacle, some conclusions about the effect of the stack height and stack location were derived.
Spectrally resolved interferometry (SRI) is an attractive technique to measure absolute distances without any moving components. In the spectral interferogram obtained by a spectrometer, the optical path difference (OPD) can simply be extracted from the linear slope of the spectral phase. However, SRI has a fundamental measuring range limitation due to maximum and minimum measurable distances. In addition, SRI cannot distinguish the OPD direction because the spectral interferogram is in the form of a natural sinusoidal function. In this investigation, we describe a direction determining SRI and propose the optimal conditions for determining OPD direction. Spectral phase nonlinearity, caused by a dispersive material, effects OPD direction but deteriorates spectral interferogram visibility. In the experiment, various phase nonlinearities were measured by adjusting the dispersive material (BK7) thickness. We observed the interferogram visibility and the possibility of direction determination. Based on the experimental results, the optimal dispersion conditions are provided to distinguish OPD directions of SRI.
