  • This study was conducted to improve the membrane characteristics and performance by increasing hydrophilicity by adding additives to the ultrafiltration polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membrane. The mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by dispersing 15 nm of fumed silica (FS) in the spinning solution at 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 wt%. SEM analysis was carried out to confirm the cross-section and surface condition. It was confirmed that mean pore radius of the hollow fiber increased by 4 nm as FS was added. In addition, contact angle measurement was carried out for the hydrophilicity analysis of hollow fiber membranes, and it was confirmed that the hydrophilicity of MMMs were increased by adding of FS. In the case of water permeability, the membrane including FS showed 91~96 LMH and showed 5~11% more increase than PSf membrane. In the antifouling performance test, relative flux reduction ratios of FS mixed hollow fiber membranes were lower than that of PSf membranes, and it was confirmed that increase of hydrophilicity hinders adsorption of hydrophobic BSA on the membrane surface.

  • In this study, PEBAX/GO-PEI and PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membranes were prepared by varying the contents of GO and ZIF-8@GO in PEBAX, and also the gas permeation characteristics of N2 and CO2 was studied. Overall, the N2 and CO2 permeability of the PEBAX/GO-PEI composite membrane decreased as the GO content increased, and the CO2/N2 selectivity slightly increased. In the case of PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membrane, the permeability of N2 decreased, but CO2 increased to 1 wt% of ZIF-8@GO and then decreased in the content thereafter. The CO2/N2 selectivity at 1 wt% of ZIF-8@GO was 92.3, showing the highest selectivity. This is thought to be due to the greatest effect of GO and ZIF-8 with good affinity for CO2 alongside the effect of porosity ZIF-8 while improving compatibility with PEBAX and dispersing evenly. In addition, PEBAX/ZIF-8@GO-PEI composite membrane improved both CO2 permeability and CO2/N2 selectivity than those of the PEBAX-PEI and PEBAX/GO-PEI membranes, except for ZIF-8@GO 5 wt%. The result was close to the Robeson upper bound.

  • Carbon nanotube has excellent mechanical strength and functionality, so it has been utilized in various applications. In recent years, utilization of carbon nanotube in construction material has started to get interests from researchers in the area of construction materials. However, there is limited amount of work with respect to the rheological properties of cement paste using carbon nanotube. In this work, solution made of multi-walled carbon nanotube with dispersing agent of polyvinyl pyrrolidone was used to prepare cement paste specimens, and rheological properties and 28 day compressive strengths of cement paste using multi-walled carbon nanotube were measured. According to the experimental results, as the amounnt of multi-walled carbon nanotube increased, plastic viscosity and yield stress of cement paste specimens also increased. It was also found that such effect was higher with lower w/c cement paste specimens. With respect to the compressive strength, it was maximized at carbon nanotube content of 0.1wt.% for w/c 0.30 cement paste, whereas the maximum strength of w/c 0.40 cement paste was observed with carbon nanotube content of 0.2wt%.

  • Composite lap joints have been extensively used due to their excellent properties and the demand for light structures. However, due to the weak mechanical properties in the thickness direction, the lap joint is easily fractured. various reinforcement methods that delay fracture by dispersing stress concentration have been applied to overcome this problem, such as z-pinning and conventional stitching. The Z-pinning is reinforcement method by inserting metal or carbon pin in the thickness direction of prepreg, and the conventional stitching process is a method of reinforcing the mechanical properties in the thickness direction by intersecting the upper and lower fibers on the preform. I-fiber stitching method is a promising technology that combines the advantages of both z-pinning and the conventional stitching. In this paper, the static and fatigue strengths of the single-lap joints reinforced by the I-fiber stitching process were evaluated. The single-lap joints were fabricated by a co-curing method using an autoclave vacuum bag process and I-fiber reinforcing effects were evaluated according to adherend thickness and stitching angle. From the experiments, the thinner the composite joint specimen, the higher the I-fiber reinforcement effect, and Ifiber stitched single lap joints showed a 52% improvement in failure strength and 118% improvement in fatigue strength.

  • Objectives : The mechanism of Gegenjieji-tang from the Han chapter of Donguibogam was studied. Focus was on the wind medicinals which constituted a large part of the formula. Methods : Medical texts from which Gegenjieji-tang originated were searched in the Zhongyifangjidacidian with which application, composition, and treatment mechanism of the Gegenjieji-tang as written in medical texts such as the Donguibogam were compared. Based on related research and medical texts, it could be determined that many ingredients of the formula were wind medicinals as suggested by Li Dongyuan. The meaning of such composition was analyzed through texts such as the Piweilun, after which mechanism of the Gegenjieji-tang was examined. Results : Based on the Zhongyifangjidacidian, Gegenjieji-tang of the Donguibogam seems to have originated from the Chaigejiejitang of the Shanghanliushu, as medicinal composition and medical application written in texts such as the Donguibogam and Shanghanliushu, along with treatment mechanism, are found to be similar to each other. Gegenjieji-tang is applied to relieve the flesh and the Stomach Channel of pathogenic Qi. The formula includes gegen, chaihu, qianghu, and shengma, which are wind medicinals according to Li Dongyuan. Wind medicinals generally have the property of uplifting and dispersing Qi. The four aforementioned herbs relieve fire stagnation and relieve heat in the flesh and muscles. Conclusions : Based on the composition of the formula which includes the four herbs that uplifts and disperses Qi, and relieves fire stagnation, it could be understood that the Gegenjieji-tang has the effect of easing the flesh through loosening Qi stagnation. Gegenjieji-tang is not simply used to purge pathogenic Qi, but to communicate the bodily Qi ultimately easing the flesh.

  • Polymer electrolyte fuel cells and water electrolysis are attracting attention in terms of high energy density and high purity hydrogen production. The catalyst layer for the polymer electrolyte fuel cell and water electrolysis is a porous electrode composed of a precious metal-based electrocatalyst and an ionomer binder. Among them, the ionomer binder plays an important role in the formation of a three-dimensional network for ion conduction in the catalyst layer and the formation of pores for the movement of materials required or generated for the electrode reaction. In terms of the use of commercial perfluorinated ionomers, the content of the ionomer, the physical properties of the ionomer, and the type of the dispersing solvent system greatly determine the performance and durability of the catalyst layer. Until now, many studies have been reported on the method of using an ionomer for the catalyst layer for polymer electrolyte fuel cells. This review summarizes the research results on the use of ionomer binders in the fuel cell aspect reported so far, and aims to provide useful information for the research on the ionomer binder for the catalyst layer, which is one of the key elements of polymer electrolyte water electrolysis to accelerate the hydrogen economy era.

  • The carbon-coated silicon monoxide (c-SiOx), which is a negative electrode active material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), has a limited cycle performance due to severe volume changes during cycles, despite its high specific capacity. In particular, the significant volume change of the active material can deform the electrode structure and easily damage the electron transfer pathway. To improve performance and mitigate electrode damage caused by volume changes, we replaced parts of the carbon black conducting agent with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) having a linear shape. The content of the entire conductive material in the electrode was fixed at 10% by mass, and the relative content of CNTs ranged from 0% to 25% by mass to prepare electrodes and evaluate electrochemical performance. As the CNT content in the electrode increased, both cycle life and rate capability improved. Even a small amount of CNT can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of a c-SiOx negative electrode with large volume changes. Furthermore, dispersing CNTs effectively can lead to achieving the equivalent performance with a reduced quantity of CNTs.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to find out kinematic and kinetic differences the lower extremity joint according to the landing type during vertical jump movement after jump landing, and to present an efficient landing method to reduce the incidence of injury in youth players. Method: Total of 24 Youth players under Korean Sport and Olympic Committee, who used either heel contact landing (HCG) or toe contact landing (TCG) participated in this study (HCG (12): CG height: 168.7 ± 9.7 cm, weight: 60.9 ± 11.6 kg, age: 14.1 ± 0.9 yrs., career: 4.3 ± 2.9 yrs., TCG height: 174.8 ± 4.9 cm, weight: 66.9 ± 9.9 kg, age 13.9 ± 0.8 yrs., career: 4.7 ± 2.0 yrs.). Participants were asked to perform jump landing consecutively followed by vertical jump. A 3-dimensional motion analysis with 19 infrared cameras and 2 force plates was performed in this study. To find out the significance between two landing styles independent t-test was performed and significance level was set at .05. Results: HCG showed a significantly higher dorsi flexion, extension and flexion angle at ankle, knee and hip joints, respectively compared with those of TCG (p<.05). Also, HCG revealed reduced RoM at ankle joint while it showed increased RoM at knee joint compared to TCG (p<.05). In addition, HGC showed greater peak force, a loading rate, and impulse than those of TCG (p<.05). Finally, greater planta flexion moment was revealed in TCG compared to HCG at ankle joint. For the knee joint HCG showed extension and flexion moment in E1 and E2, respectively, while TCG showed opposite results. Conclusion: Compared to toe contact landing, the heel contact landing is not expected to have an advantage in terms of absorbing and dispersing the impact of contact with the ground to the joint. If these movements continuously used, performance may deteriorate, including injuries, so it is believed that education on safe landing methods is needed for young athletes whose musculoskeletal growth is not fully mature.

  • This paper describes a newly developed pollutant transport model named ARPTM which was designed to simulate the transport and characteristics of pollutant materials after an accidental spill in upstream of river system up to a given position in the downstream. In particular, the ARPTM incorporated ADCP data to compute longitudinal dispersion coefficient and advection velocity which are necessary to apply one-dimensional advection-dispersion equation. ARPTM was built on top of the geographic information system platforms to take advantage of the technology's capabilities to track geo-referenced processes and visualize the simulated results in conjunction with associated geographic layers such as digital maps. The ARPTM computes travel distance, time, and concentration of the pollutant cloud in the given flow path from the river network, after quickly finding path between the spill of the pollutant material and any concerned points in the downstream. ARPTM is closely connected with a recently developed GIS-based Arc River database that stores inputs and outputs of ARPTM. ARPTM thereby assembles measurements, modeling, and cyberinfrastructure components to create a useful cyber-tool for determining and visualizing the dynamics of the clouds of pollutants while dispersing in space and time. ARPTM is expected to be potentially used for building warning system for the transport of pollutant materials in a large basin.

  • There are several novel uses for dispersing many nanoparticles into a conventional fluid, including dynamic sealing, damping, heat dissipation, microfluidics, and more. Therefore, melting heat and mass transfer characteristics of a 3-D MHD Hybrid Nanofluid flow over a rotating disc with presenting dufour and soret effects are assessed numerically in this study. In this instance, we investigated both ferric sulfate and molybdenum disulfide as nanoparticles suspended within base fluid water. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into linked higher-order non-linear ordinary differential equations by the local similarity transformation. The collection of these deduced equations is then resolved using a Chebyshev spectral collocation-based algorithm built into the Mathematica software. To demonstrate how different instances of hybrid/ nanofluid are impacted by changes in temperature, velocity, and the distribution of nanoparticle concentration, examples of graphical and numerical data are given. For many values of the material parameters, the computational findings are shown. Simulations conducted for different physical parameters in the model show that adding hybrid nanoparticle to the fluid mixture increases heat transfer in comparison to simple nanofluids. It has been identified that hybrid nanoparticles, as opposed to single-type nanoparticles, need to be taken into consideration to create an effective thermal system. Furthermore, porosity lowers the velocities of simple and hybrid nanofluids in both cases. Additionally, results show that the drag force from skin friction causes the nanoparticle fluid to travel more slowly than the hybrid nanoparticle fluid. The findings also demonstrate that suction factors like magnetic and porosity parameters, as well as nanoparticles, raise the skin friction coefficient. Furthermore, It indicates that the outcomes from different flow scenarios correlate and are in strong agreement with the findings from the published literature. Bar chart depictions are altered by changes in flow rates. Moreover, the results confirm doctors' views to prescribe hybrid nanoparticle and particle nanoparticle contents for achalasia patients and also those who suffer from esophageal stricture and tumors. The results of this study can also be applied to the energy generated by the melting disc surface, which has a variety of industrial uses. These include, but are not limited to, the preparation of semiconductor materials, the solidification of magma, the melting of permafrost, and the refreezing of frozen land.
