In this paper, we propose a multiresolution stereo matching method based on genetic algorithm using edge information. The proposed approach considers the matching environment as an optimization problem and finds the solution by using a genetic algorithm. A cost function composes of certain constraints which are commonly used in stereo matching. We defines the structure of chromosomes using edge pixel information of reference image of stereo pair. To increase the efficiency of process, we apply image pyramid method to stereo matching and calculate the initial disparity map at the coarsest resolution. Then initial disparity map is propagated to the next finer resolution, interpolated and performed disparity refinement. We valid our approach not only reduce the search time for correspondence but alse ensure the validity of matching.

In the Markov network which models disparity map with the Markov Random Fields(MRF), the belief propagation algorithm is operated by message passing between nodes corresponding to each pixel. The initial message value is converged by iterations of the algorithm and the algorithm requires many iterations to get converged messages. In this paper, we simplify the algorithm by regarding the objects in the disparity map as combinations of lines with same message valued nodes to reduce iterations of the algorithm.
In this paper we define the probability models for determining the disparity map given stereo images and derive the methods for solving the problem, which is proven to be equivalent to an energy-based stereo matching. Under the assumptions the difference between the pixel on the left image and the corresponding pixel on the right image and the difference between the disparities of the neighboring pixels are exponentially distributed, a recursive approach for estimating the MRF regularizing parameter is proposed. The proposed method alternates between estimating the parameters with the intermediate disparity map and estimating the disparity map with the estimated parameters, after computing it with random initial parameters. Our algorithm is applied to the stereo matching algorithms based on the dynamic programming and belief propagation to verify its operation and measure its performance.
This paper is related to the object-based stereo matching algorithm which makes it possible to estimate inner-region disparities for each segmented region. First, several sample points are selected for effectively representing the segmented region, Next, stereo matching is applied to the small area within segmented region which existed in the neighborhood or each sample point. Finally, inner-region disparities are interpolated using a plane equation with disparity of each selected sample. According to the proposed method, the problem of feature-based method that the depth estimation is possible only in the feature points can be solved through the propagation of the disparity in the sample point into the inside of the region. Also, as selecting sample points in contour of segmented region we can effectively suppress obscurity which is occurred in the depth estimation of the monotone region in area-based methods.
In this paper, the matching error rates of modified area-based, energy-based algorithms, and learning-based structures were compared for stereo image matching. Census transform (CT) based on region and life propagation (BP) algorithm based on energy were selected, respectively.Existing algorithms have been improved and implemented in an embedded processor environment so that they can be used for stereo image matching in mobile systems. Even in the case of the learning base to be compared, a neural network structure that utilizes small-scale parameters was adopted. To compare the error rates of the three matching methods, Middlebury's Tsukuba was selected as a test image and subdivided into non-occlusion, discontinuous, and disparity error rates for accurate comparison. As a result of the experiment, the error rate of modified CT matching improved by about 11% when compared with the existing algorithm. BP matching was about 87% better than conventional CT in the error rate. Compared to the learning base using neural networks, BP matching was about 31% superior.

In this paper, we investigate a real-time environment recognition system based on stereo vision for moving object. This system consists of stereo matching, obstacle detection and distance estimation. In stereo matching part, depth maps can be obtained real road images captured adjustable baseline stereo vision system using belief propagation(BP) algorithm. In detection part, various obstacles are detected using only depth map in case of both v-disparity and column detection method under the real road environment. Finally in estimation part, asymmetric parabola fitting with NCC method improves estimation of obstacle detection. This stereo vision system can be applied to many applications such as unmanned vehicle and robot.
Water-induced strength reduction is one of the most critical causes for rock deformation and failure. Understanding the effects of water on the strength, toughness and deformability of rocks are of a great importance in rock fracture mechanics and design of structures in rock. However, only a few studies have been conducted to understand the effects of water on fracture properties such as fracture toughness, crack propagation velocity, consumed energy, and microstructural damage. Thus, in this study, we focused on the understanding of how microscale damages induced by water saturation affect mesoscale mechanical and fracture properties compared with oven dried specimens along three notch orientations-divider, arrester, and short transverse. The mechanical properties of calcite-cemented sandstone were examined using standard uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) tests. In addition, fracture properties such as fracture toughness, consumed energy and crack propagation velocity were examined with cracked chevron notched Brazilian disk (CCNBD) tests. Digital Image Correlation (DIC), a non-contact optical measurement technique, was used for both strain and crack propagation velocity measurements along the bedding plane orientations. Finally, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) was employed to investigate the microstructural damages produced in calcite-cemented sandstone specimens before and after CCNBD tests. As results, both mechanical and fracture properties reduced significantly when specimens were saturated. The effects of water on fracture properties (fracture toughness and consumed energy) were predominant in divider specimens when compared with arrester and short transverse specimens. Whereas crack propagation velocity was faster in short transverse and slower in arrester, and intermediate in divider specimens. Based on ESEM data, water in the calcite-cemented sandstone induced microstructural damages (microcracks and voids) and increased the strength disparity between cement/matrix and rock forming mineral grains, which in turn reduced the crack propagation resistance of the rock, leading to lower both consumed energy and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$).
In this paper, we present a new camera system combining a high-quality 3-D scanner and hybrid camera system to generate a multiview video-plus-depth. In order to get the 3-D video using the hybrid camera system and 3-D scanner, we first obtain depth information for background region from the 3-D scanner. Then, we get the depth map for foreground area from the hybrid camera system. Initial depths of each view image are estimated by performing 3-D warping with the depth information. Thereafter, multiview depth estimation using the initial depths is carried out to get each view initial disparity map. We correct the initial disparity map using a belief propagation algorithm so that we can generate the high-quality multiview disparity map. Finally, we refine depths of the foreground boundary using extracted edge information. Experimental results show that the proposed depth maps generation method produces a 3-D video with more accurate multiview depths and supports more natural 3-D views than the previous works.

To acquire depth information using stereo vision, it is required to find correspondence points between stereo image pair. Conventional stereo vision systems usually use two cameras to get disparity data. Therefore, conventional stereo matching methods cannot resolve the tradeoff problem between accuracy and precision with respect to the length of baseline. Besides, belief propagation method, which is being used recently, has a problem that matching performance is dependent on the fixed weight parameter ${\lambda}$. In this paper, we propose a modified belief propagation stereo matching technique based on multi-baseline stereo vision to solve the tradeoff problem. The proposed method calculates EMAD(extended mean of absolute differences) as local evidence. And proposed method decides weight parameter ${\lambda}$ adaptively to local texture information. The proposed method shows higher initial matching performance than conventional methods and reached optimum solution in less iteration. The matching performance is increased about 4.85 dB in PSNR.

The multi-band (MB) ultra-wideband (UWB) communication system divides its available frequency spectrum in 3.1 to 10.6GHz into 16 sub-bands, which leads to inherent disparities between carrier frequencies of each sub-band. For instance, the highest carrier frequency is 2.65 times higher than the lowest one. Since the propagation loss is proportional to the square of the transmission frequency, the propagation loss on the sub-band having the highest carrier frequency is approximately 7 times larger than that on the sub-band having the lowest carrier frequency, which results in disparities between received signal powers on each sub-band. In this paper, we propose a novel correlation scheme for frequency hopping (FH) MB UWB communications, where the correlation time is adaptively adjusted relative to the sub-band, which reduces the disparity between the received signal energies on each sub-band. Such compensation for lower received powers on sub-bands having higher carrier frequency leads to an improvement on the total average bit error rate (BER) of the entire FH MB UWB communication system. We analyze the performance of the proposed correlation scheme in Nakagami fading channels, and it is shown that the performance gain provided by the proposed correlator is more significant as the Nakagami fading index n increases (i.e., better channel conditions).
