  • During the past decade, interest in and knowledge of eating disorders have increased in the medical, social science, and popular literature. Despite this advance in this field, eating disorders in males have received relatively little attention in the literature. However, in recent years, there has been increased awareness that eating disorders occurs in males, as well as females, although research and theoretical discussions concerning this subgroup still remain scare. In this review, the author highlights the clinical characteristics that distinguish male patients with eating disorders from their female counterparts. The identification of such characteristics will improve diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders in males and may increase our understanding of processes that are specific to eating disorders in both sexes.

  • The purposes of the present study were: (1) to investigate aeromedical dissorders prevalent among ROK air force pilots and (2) to evaluate their detrimental effects on flight performance. The study examined the eight flight-induced disorders primarily responsible for permanent grounding and flying restrictions. According to the survey of 600 randomly selected pilots, 80.2% of the respondents have experienced low back pain, which was 20% higher than the lifetime prevalence in Swedish male workers. Bradyacusia ranked second (56.0%) resulting from continuous exposure to high aircraft noise. The cardiovascular disorders, the most common cause for permanent grounding of Canadian forces pilots, were found in 16.0% of the Korean pilots. Due to the high prevalence of the disorders, in 1993 the Korean pilots received medical treatments 10 times as many as factory workdes. Compared to the flight performance of Israeli and British pilots in wars, the flight performance of the Korean pilots was found to be inferior. Such poor performance can be attributable to the high incidence rates of disorders. Statistical analyses revealed that the aeromedical disorders were related to personal variables such as age, flight career- related factors, and fatigue. Cigarette smoking and drinking habit contributed to worsening back pain, barotitis media, and pulmonary disorders. More comprehensive research was recommended to identify health hazards, combined with intervention to minimize disorders that could lead to early termination of flight careers or excessive loss of flight time. This study further suggests that aeromedical institutions in Korean air force should be fostered more professionally and financially.

  • In this study, five cases of post-stroke vision disorders are presented. The patients had no distinctive change in vision disorders before Korean medical treatment, which included herbal medicine, acupuncture, and electroacupuncture. After 11 to 28 days of Korean medical treatment, the patients experienced the first improvement of vision disorders after stroke. Also, patients who received Korean medical treatment after 30 days from onset, the duration in which the most improvement of post-stroke vision disorders occurs, progressed their vision disorders by the start of Korean medical treatment. Korean medical treatment might be effective in treating vision disorders after stroke.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatment of mesoglycan. This study was conducted between September 2003 and May 2004. A total of 292 patients with vascular disorders including cerebral infarction were enrolled. The patients were administered with 50-100mg of mesoglycan by an oral route everyday for eight weeks. Subjective physicians' assessments of efficacy had ratings of 'improvement', 'invariability', 'exacerbation' and 'not being able to assess'. An improvement was observed in 241 patients out of 274; 18 patients were rules out. The efficacy rate was influenced statistically significantly by the duration of therapy (p=0.0392) and daily mean drug dose (p<0.0001). The adverse events were reported in 8 patients (9 cases) out of 292 patients: skin/appendages disorders (0.7%), liver/biliary system disorders (0.7%), cardiovascular system disorders (0.7%), neurologic disorders (0.3%). respiratory disorders (0.3%) and gastrointestinal system disorders (0.3%). There showed no serious adverse events. These results indicate that mesoglycan was well tolerated and effective for the prevention of vascular disorders.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to explore and describe the disease experience of Korean women with eating disorders within psychological and sociocultural context. Methods: The participants were 12 young adult women suffering with eating disorders or have recovered from the diseases. Data were collected via in-depth interviews and analyzed according to the grounded theory methodology by Strauss and Corbin. Results: The core category of the disease experience was 'becoming the master of life through desperate efforts'. The disease experience was categorized into five different phases including 'falling under the influence of others', 'collapsing the self: life swallowed by loosening weight', 'facing the wrecked self', 'struggling between the self and others', 'truly facing the self'. The intervening conditions were various supporting systems such as 'support from family', 'economic support' and 'support from trustworthy health professionals'. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that it is necessary to develop nursing interventions to support women with eating disorders and alleviate their suffering from eating disorders. Also specialized educational programs are warranted to prevent the eating disorders, and to reduce social stigma of eating disorders.

  • Various disorders cause hyperammonemia during childhood. Amongthem are those caused by inherited defects in urea synthesis and related metabolic pathways. These disorders can be grouped into two types: disorders of the enzymes that comprise the urea cycle, and disorders of the transporters or metabolites of theamino acids related to the urea cycle. Principal clinical features of these disorders are caused by elevated levels of blood ammonium. Additional disease-specific symptoms are related to the particular metabolic defect. These specific clinical manifestations are often due to an excess or lack of specific amino acids. Treatment of urea cycle disorders and related metabolic diseases consists of nutritional restriction of proteins, administration of specific amino acids, and use of alternative pathways for discarding excess nitrogen. Although combinations of these treatments are extensively employed, the prognosis of severe cases remains unsatisfactory. Liver transplantation is one alternative for which a better prognosis is reported.
