  • An analytical solution for deflection-load characteristics of a conical disk spring used especially in the automotive manual transmission clutch applications is proposed in order to take into account the effects of friction and large deformation. The conical disk spring, or the diaphragm spring, has a hinge support, an application point of release load at the tip of the fingers and an application point of clamp load near but inside the outer perimeter of the conical disk spring. The friction coefficient is assumed to be a constant regardless of the speed of deflection and the magnitude of loads. Comparison with experimental shows a good agreement with the analytical prediction. Also, the sensitivity of the clamp load due to variations in the geometrical parameters of the conical disk spring is calculated and discussed.

  • The damping of a shock absorption device composed of nonlinear disk spring stacks and rubber rings was investigated. Friction forces of rubber rings and hysteresis of disk springs were obtained experimentally. The hysteresis curves of several types of disk spring stacks were approximated, from which the energy dissipated was estimated. Based upon the friction force and the energy dissipated, 4 damping models were presented and shock responses of the damping models were investigated. The hysteresis of disk spring is more meaningful than the friction of the rubber ring for the damping. For practical use, equivalent viscous damping model for total energy dissipated per cycle was suggested.

  • In this paper the instability of the system which has a disk and a mass-spring-damper system interacting through a medium having stiffness and damping is analyzed. To solve the equations of motion of this systme, it is assumed that the solution consists of the eigenfunctions which are the products of the Bessel functions and sine or cosine functions. The former represents the radial characteristics of the disk and the latter represents the circumferential characteristics. Using this assumed solution and the orthogonality of the eigenfunctions, the equations of motion can be transformed into a set of equations of motion with variables dependent only on the time. After this set is changed to the state equation, the eigenvalue problem can be made. Once the eigenvalues are calculated according to the angular velocity of the disk, the dynamic characteristics ofthis system is obtained. Because the thickness of the disk and the element characteristics of the mass-spring-damper system have important effects on the stability of the system, it will be understood how these factors affect the system and then a method to ameliorate the stability of the system with a disk will be presented.

  • This study pertains to damping device to reduce vibrational responses and shocks in multi-directions. To enhance the capability of disk spring damper which works for vertical vibration and shock, a multi-directional damper is proposed, which contains wedge system as well as disk spring stack. Wedge system converts horizontal load into vertical load. A mathematical model is proposed and investigated for the nonlinear behaviors of the disc spring damper containing wedge system. The results accord with the experimental results. Equivalent viscous damping in vertical and horizontal directions are found based upon energy dissipated.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates striction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. In this paper, a single spring inertia latch is introduced for a small form optical disk drive, which uses a rotary actuator for moving an optical pick-up. A new small inertia latch with sin91e spring is designed to ensure both feasible and small size. The shock performance of the new inertia latch is experimentally verified.

  • An analytical and experimental investigation is performed into the mechanical behavior of carbon-fiber/epoxy woven coned annular disk springs. An analytical approach is presented for predicting the deformation behavior of disk springs of specially orthotropic laminates with arbitrary geometric parameters. In addition, an analytical methodology is proposed for obtaining the deformation behavior of a stack of disk springs. The methodology is capable of accounting for parallel and series arrangements for uniform and irregular stacks. Element and assembly experimental results are used to validate the proposed method showing how to achieve flexible spring rates at various deflections ranges. This manuscript also provides guidelines for design and validation of disk spring assemblies.

  • Dynamic Load/unload (L/UL) mechanism is an alternative to the contact start stop (CSS) technology which eliminates stiction and wear failure modes associated with CSS. Other benefits of L/UL include increased areal density due to smooth disk surfaces, thinner overcoats, and lower head flying height Improved shock resistance due to elimination of head slap, and reduced power consumption. Inertia latch mechanism becomes important for mobile disk drives because of non operating shock performance. Various types of latch designs have been introduced in hard disk drives to limit a rotary actuator from sudden uncontrolled motion. • In this paper, the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics of a polyurethane spring restoring disk bearing are analysed to predict the dynamic behavior of the bearing. The prediction results and the test results are compared. The Young's modulus of the polyurethane spring, which varies according to strain of spring and the friction coefficient, of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), which varies according to the velocity and pressure of PTFE, are considered as the factors influencing the dynamic characteristics. W-PTFE virgin products are used and polyurethane springs are produced for the tests. The equation related to changing the friction coefficient and the modulus of elasticity are obtained through an inverse estimation of the test results. The estimation results, considering the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics, simulate the test results more appropriately than the estimation without the consideration of those factors.

  • This paper presents a case study on the tribological failure analysis of a clutch system for a manual transmission car. The clutch systems are composed of clutch disk, clutch pressure plate, flywheel rubbing surface, coil and diaphragm springs, release bearing and lever, clutch spline and shaft. The purpose of a clutch system is to transmit and disconnect the driving power of engines by frictional farce from a rubbing surface of a flywheel to a clutch disk and clutch pressure plate with a minimum power loss. In this study, many tribological failure cases based on the wear phenomena and thermal distortions have been presented, which are collected from the car repair shop and maintenance center. The triboiogicai failures are mostly come from the driving conditions, overloading of a car, and especially driving style and personal habit of a car driver.
