This is a presentation of the paper published as Kimm et al. 2016, ApJ, 823, 52. We investigate the formation of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) at the center of two dark matter halos with $Mhalo{\sim}4{\times}107Msun$ at z>10 using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that very compact (${\leq}1$ pc) and massive (${\sim}6{\times}105Msun$) clusters form rapidly when pristine gas collapses isothermally with the aid of efficient $Ly{\alpha}$ emission during the transition from molecular-cooling halos to atomic-cooling halos. Because the local free-fall time of dense star-forming gas is very short (${\ll}1Myr$), a large fraction of the collapsed gas is turned into stars before stellar feedback processes blow out the gas and shut down star formation. Although the early stage of star formation is limited to a small region of the central star-forming disk, we find that the disk quickly fragments due to metal enrichment from supernovae. Sub-clusters formed in the fragmented clouds eventually merge with the main cluster at the center. The simulated clusters closely resemble the local GCs in mass and size but show a metallicity spread that is much wider than found in the local GCs. We discuss a role of pre-enrichment by Pop III and II stars as a potential solution to the latter issue. Although not without shortcomings, it is encouraging that a naive blind (not tuned) cosmological simulation presents a possible channel for the formation of at least some massive GCs.

In hot forming process, the dies in which excessive worn or crack occurs is reused after repair. Generally hot forming dies are recycled through a welding repair method. Welding repair methods are highly dependent on the skills of engineer. It causes process defects such as dimensional defects and structural defects. Recently, the metal 3D printing method has been applied to the repair of used dies. The aim of this study is to evaluate the wear characteristics of AISI H13 tool steel repaired by 3D printing method. Three kinds of wear specimens were fabricated by using 3D printing, welding, and initial material. A pin-on-disk wear test was carried out to evaluate the wear characteristics. From the result of wear test, the wear characteristics of 3D printing method was superior to that of the welded material, and was similar to that of the initial material.
We investigate the velocity distribution of dark matter in the disk of a galaxy like the Milky Way at the solar radius. Using N-body simulations with the total mass and z-component of angular momentum conserved, we calculate the response of a dissipationless dark matter galactic halo during the dissipational collapse of the baryonic matter in spiral galaxy formation. The initial distribution of dark matter and baryonic particles is assumed to be a homogeneous mixture based on a King model. The baryonic matter is assumed to contract, forming the final luminous components of the galaxy, namely the disk and, in some cases, a bulge and central point. Both slow and fast growth of the luminous components are considered. We find that the velocity distribution of dark matter particles in a reference frame rotating slowly about the galaxy center in the plane of the disk is similar to a Maxwellian, but it is somewhat boxier, being flatter at the peak and truncated in the tails of the distribution. We tabulate parameters for the best-fitting Maxwellian and modified-Maxwellian distributions. There is no significant difference between slow collapse and fast collapse for all these results. We were unable to detect any effect of disk formation on the z-dependence of the dark matter density distribution.
NGC 4522 is a spiral galaxy located in the Virgo cluster which appears to be undergoing active ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM). What makes this galaxy special is the extraplanar CO gas, some of which coincides with the extraplanar $H{\alpha}$ patches. As one of the few cases where the interstellar molecular gas is thought to have been pushed out from the stellar disk by the ICM, this galaxy provides an opportunity to study the impact of ICM pressure on the dense/star forming gas and its fate in the extraplanar space after stripping. In order to probe detailed molecular gas properties inside and outside the stellar disk and the associated star formation activities, we have observed NGC 4522 in 12CO (1-0) and 13CO (1-0) using the ALMA. We have targeted two regions, one around the center of the galaxy and one centered on the peak of the extraplanar CO, detecting both lines in both regions. Particularly, this is the first case where 13CO gas has been detected outside the stellar disk in a galaxy undergoing ram pressure stripping. In this work, we present preliminary results from the ALMA observations and discuss the evolution of molecular gas properties and star formation activities inside and outside the stellar disk.

We present the radial variations of the scale heights and the vertical velocity dispersions in a sample of nearby edge-on galaxies using BIMA/CARMA $^{12}CO$ ($J=1{\rightarrow}0$), VLA/EVLA HI, and Spitzer $3.6{\mu}m$ data. Both the disk thicknesses and the velocity dispersions of gas and stars vary with radius, contrary to assumptions of previous studies. We investigate how the interstellar gas pressure and the gravitational instability parameter differ from values derived assuming constant velocity dispersions and scale heights. Using the measurement of the disk thicknesses and the derived radial profiles of gas and stars, we estimate the corresponding volume densities. The gravitational instability parameter Q follows a fairly uniform profile with radius and is ${\geq}1$ across the star-forming disk. The star formation law has a slope that is significantly different from those found in more face-on galaxy studies. The midplane gas pressure appears to roughly hold a power-law correlation with the midplane volume density ratio (${\rho}_{H2}/{\rho}_{HI}$).
We investigate the impact of ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) on star-forming disk galaxies with a multiphase interstellar medium maintained by strong stellar feedback. We carry out radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated disk galaxy embedded in a 1011 M⦿ dark matter halo with various ICM winds mimicking the cluster outskirts (moderate) and the central environment (strong). We find that both star formation quenching and triggering occur in ram pressure-stripped galaxies, depending on the strength of the winds. HI and H2 in the outer galactic disk are significantly stripped in the presence of moderate winds, whereas turbulent pressure provides support against ram pressure in the central region, where star formation is active. Moderate ICM winds facilitate gas collapse, increasing the total star formation rates by ~40% when the wind is oriented face-on or by ~80% when it is edge-on. In contrast, strong winds rapidly blow away neutral and molecular hydrogen gas from the galaxy, suppressing star formation by a factor of 2 within ~200 Myr. Dense gas clumps with nH≳10 M⦿ pc-2 are easily identified in extraplanar regions, but no significant young stellar populations are found in such clumps. In our attempts to enhance radiative cooling by adopting a colder ICM of T=106K only a few additional stars are formed in the tail region, even if the amount of newly cooled gas increases by an order of magnitude.
We will present a discovery of an elliptical jellyfish galaxy in Abell 2670 (Sheen et al. 2017, ApJL, 840, L7). Our MUSE IFU spectra revealed a rotating gas disk in the center of the galaxy and long ionised gas tails emanating from the disk. Its one-sided tails and a tadpole-like morphology of star-forming blobs around the galaxy suggested that the galaxy is experiencing strong ram-pressure stripping in the cluster environment. Stellar kinematics with stellar absorption lines in the MUSE spectra demonstrated that the galaxy is an elliptical galaxy without any hint of a stellar disk. Then, the primary question would be the origin of the rich gas component in the elliptical galaxy. A plausible scenario is a wet merger with a gas-rich companion. In order to investigate star formation history of the system (the galaxy and star-forming blobs), we derived star-formation rate and metallicity from the MUSE spectra. Photometric UV-Optica-IR SED fitting was also performed using GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS and WISE data, to estimate dust and gas masses in the system. For a better understanding of star formation history and environmental effect of this galaxy, FIR/sub-mm follow-up observations are proposed.
A biosensor with PZT piezoelectric ceramic crystal was developed for the detection of formaldehyde gas. Poled PZT piezoelectric ceramic disk was made from ZrO2, TiO2 and Nb2O5, together with the addition of PbO and polyvinyl alcohol, through various processes of mixing, calcination drying, crushing, forming, sintering, polishing, ion coating and poling. Oscillator circuit of sensor was made of operational amplifier(AD811AN). Formaldehyde dehydrogenase was immobilized onto a piezoelectic ceramic crystal, together with the cofactors, reduced glutathione and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. The effect of flow rate on the sensitivity was determined by varing the flow rate of carrier gas from 24.7mL/min to 111.7mL/min through detector cell. The results indicated that as the flow rate was increased, the recovery rate was increased. And a significant increase in the sensitivity was observed in enhanced flow rate of carrier gas. Frequency difference(ΔF) of immobilized PZT piezoelectic disk increased proportionally to the concentration gas and reproduced to repeated exposures of formaldehyde gas(28ppm, Δ68Hz).

A design methodology is applied for manufacturing a disk-brake piston component and a washing machine container. The design criteria are the limit drawing ratio and the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic FEM have been applied to simulate both of the conventional manufacturing processes, respectively, which include deep drawing and forging process. Simulations of one stage process from a selected stock to the final product shape are performed for generating information on additional requirements for metal flow. The best manufacturing processes are selected, which is using a hemispherical punch in the deep drawing process for both disk-brake piston component and washing machine container.
Disk galaxies abound with intermediate-scale structures such as OB star complexes, giant clouds, and dust spurs in a close geometrical association with spiral arms. Various mechanisms have been proposed as candidates for their origin, but a comprehensive theory should encompass fundamental physical agents such as self-gravity, magnetic fields, galactic differential rotation, and spiral arms, all of which are known to exist in disk galaxies. Recent numerical simulations incorporating all these physical processes show that magneto-Jeans instability (MJI), in which magnetic tension resists the stabilizing Coriolis force of galaxy rotation, is much more powerful than swing-amplification or the Parker instability in forming self-gravitating intermediate-scale structures. The MJI occurring in shearing and expanding flows off spiral arms rapidly forms structures elongated along the direction perpendicular to the arms, remarkably similar to dust spurs seen in HST images of spiral galaxies. In highly nonlinear stages, these spurs fragment to form bound clumps, possibly evolving into bright arm and interarm H II regions, suggesting that all these intermediate-scale structures in spiral galaxies probably share a common dynamical origin.
