We study the characteristics of airflow and sound noise induced by disk rotation in optical disk drives. The characteristics of airflow around a rotating disk surrounded by various tray structures are numerically investigated using a commercial CFD program and then compared with experimental results. Sound pressure and intensity caused by the fluid-structure interactions in the CD/DVD-ROM drive are measured, and the effect of the ariflow on the sound noise and disk vibration is discussed. In order to reduce airflow-induced noise and vibration around the rotating disk, tray geometry is modified. Both numerical and experimental studies implemented with different tray models show that the improved tray model alters the characteristics of the disk-induced airflow, causing the reduction of the airflow-induced sound level.
As the rotational speed and the track density are increased, the vibration of disk/spindle system becomes critical issue. In this work, we propose a simple inclined air bearing(20mm${\times}$20mm) system which is positioned very near to the rotating disk especially compact disc(CD) as a flexible disk, and we investigate suppressing effect about disk mode (0,0) both experimentally and numerically. We find dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of bearing and apply to the disk vibration. The results show about 10 percent errors comparing to the experimental results. Also we investigate experimentally the reduction of disk vibration and power consumption with two different kinds of inclined bearing for normal disk drive system, which has tray and cover. We find inclined air bearing can decrease about 30 percents of the original disk vibration amplitude.
In high-capacity disk drives with ever-growing track density, the allowable level of position error signal(PES) is becoming smaller and smaller. In order to achieve the high TPI(track per inch) disk drive, it is necessary to improve the writing accuracy during the servo track writing(STW) Process through the reduction of track mis-registration sources. Among the main contributors of the non-repeatable runout(NRRO) PES, the disk vibration and the head-stack assembly vibration is considered to be one of the most significant factors. Also the most contributors of repeatable runout(RRO) come from the contributors of NRRO which is written-in at the time of STW process. In this paper, the effect of NRRO on servo written-in RRO is Investigated by experimentally, and the experimental result shows that the written-in RRO can be effectively reduced through a STW process under low dense medium condition such as semi-vacuum.
As the rotational speed and the track density are increased, the vibration of disk/spindle system becomes critical issue in order to reduce the track mis-registration. In this work, we propose a simple inclined air bearing (20${\times}$20 mm) system which is located very near to the rotating poly-carbonate disk, and investigate suppressing effect for the disk vibration mode (0,0) both experimentally and numerically. We find dynamic stiffness and damping coefficients of air bearing and then apply those values to the disk vibration analysis. Numerical results show about 10 percent difference comparing to the experimental results. Also we investigate the reduction of disk vibration and power consumption with two different kinds of inclined bearing for the normal disk drive system experimentally. We find inclined air bearing can reduce about 30 percents of the transverse disk vibration.
High speed rotating airflow inside a HDD chamber causes sub-micron scale disk vibration that could generate significant TMR problems in most of current HDD products. Many publications are presented for the reduction of airflow excitation. One of the most effective methods widely adopted in high-end HDD products is SqueezeAir Bearing Plate (SABP). However, because of its tight assembly clearance between the damper and disk, this method could not be easily implemented in volume production. This article presents a disk damper design that is modified to be feasible for volume production by virtue of a new airflow modeling method.
The durability of head/disk interface is an important issue for hard disk drives. Currently, there are several means of assessing the performance and integrity of the head/disk interface. In this work Track Average Amplitude(TAA) signal was used to analyzed the head/disk interface with respect to variations in disk velocity, slider pre-load and preformed scratch on the disk. Particularly, TAA variation due to disk defect in the form of a scratch was investigated.
This paper presents a nonlinear controller design for optical disk drive systems to improve anti-shock performance. The nonlinear anti-shock controller is added parallel to the original linear servo control loop. In the previous work, a dead-zone nonlinear element is used for the nonlinear controller and a PID control method is used for the linear controller. Although this parallel structure of the controller improves anti-shock performance, it has a narrow stability bound. In this paper, the dead-zone with saturation nonlinear element is proposed for the nonlinear controller. Since this nonlinear element improves stability margin, we can use higher slope gain of dead-zone than that of nonlinear controller using dead-zone only. In the linear controller design, it is shown that the lead-lag control has an improved stability margin over PID control. Numerical simulation results and experimental results show that the proposed method can get better performance to the external shock than previously proposed methods.
