  • By the increasing amount of vehicles, the increase of car accident served as a major momentum for remind the importance of braking system. The adequate design of a passenger car braking system, which is directly related to the safety of a car, is very important since the safety is an essential design parameter of a car to keep men and car from the damage. The thermal behaviors of the ventilated disk has been investigated based on the air cooling effects during repeat braking operations. In this study, the temperature and velocity fields of 3-D unsteady simulated model are obtained using a software package "FLUENT". The numerical results show that there exits a temperature nonuniformity between the disk faces contacting with pads.

  • We have performed a set of high-resolution simulations of nuclear star-forming ring that results in an inward gas migration from the galactic disk. Our simulations consider gas heating/cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. The galactic potential was obtained from a snapshot of a 6.3 million particle simulation of a galactic disk at 1 Gyr, which manifests spiral arms and pseudo-bulge. The potential was modeled with a combination of 3-dimensional spherical (for the pseudo-bulge) and 2-dimensional cylindrical (for the disk) multipole expansion technique. With such a potential model, one can easily set up various realistic 3-dimensional potential models by slightly changing the expansion coefficients. We have performed a set of simulations with a few million gas particles covering the central ~6 kpc of the disk for different pseudo-bulge sizes and non-axisymmetry, and we report the dependence of the gas inflow rate, size of the star-forming ring, and star-formation rate in the ring on the size and strength of the non-axisymmetry in the bulge.

  • In automotive brake systems, the frictional heat generated can cause high temperature at the interface of rotor and pad which may deteriorate the material properties of the sliding parts and can result in brake fade. Conventionally, a pie-shaped 3-dimentional model is adopted to calculate temperature of ventilated disk using finite element method. To overcome the difficulties in preparing 3D finite element model and reduce the computational time required, the ventilated rotor is to be analyzed, in this study, as an axisymmetric finite element model in which, taking into considerations the effects of cooling passages, a homogenization technique is used to obtain the equivalent thermal properties and boundary conditions for the elements placed at the vent holes. Numerical tests show the proposed procedure can be successfully applied in practice, replacing 3-dimensional thermal analysis of ventilated disk.

  • Symbiotic stars are wide binary systems of a white dwarf and a mass losing giant, exhibiting various activities mainly attributed to accretion of a fraction of slow stellar wind emanating from the giant. We perform 3 dimensional hydrodynamical simulations using the FLASH code to investigate the formation and physical structures of an accretion disk in symbiotic stars with binary separation in the range of 2-4 au. Radiative cooling is introduced in the flow in order to avoid acute pressure increase in the vicinity of the accretor that may prevent stable disk formation. By setting the same density condition in front of the bow shock generated in two different velocity fields, the role of ram pressure balancing between the disk and the wind is examined. We find that three main streams (direct stream from the giant, stream following the accretion wake, and stream passing through the bow shock front) all feed the disk, and their individual contributions on the mass accretion onto the white dwarf are explored.

  • Previous numerical simulations on planet-disk interactions revealed a lot of interesting phenomena including the planetary migration and the formation of many sub-structures inside the disks. However, these simulations were limited to an isothermal or adiabatic equation of state which does not account for various heating and cooling processes in the disks. Recent studies showed that the behavior of the planet-disk interaction can be significantly influenced by the disk thermodynamics. We develop a radiative diffusion module based on the two-temperature flux-limited diffusion approximation accounting for viscous heating and the accretion feedback. In this presentation, we describe our radiative diffusion solver, present some test results, and discuss potential applications of the module to planet-disk interactions,

  • Gravitational instability (GI) can produce massive gas giants on wide orbits by fragmentation of protoplanetary disks (PPDs). While most previous works focus on PPDs around solar mass stars, gas giants have been observed in systems with a wide range of stellar masses including M dwarfs. We use the GIZMO code to perform global three-dimensional simulations of self-gravitating disks around low-mass stars. Our models consider heating by turbulent viscosity and stellar irradiation and the β cooling occurring over the dynamical time. We run various models with differing disk-to-star mass ratio q and disk temperature. We find that strongly gravitating disks either produce spirals or undergo fragmentation. The minimum q value for fragmentation is 0.2-0.7, with a smaller value corresponding to a more massive star and/or a smaller disk. The critical q value depends somewhat sensitively on the disk temperature, suggesting that the stellar irradiation is an important factor in determining GI. We discuss our results in comparison with previous work as well as recent ALMA observations.

  • Recently, the application range of plastic gears is widely expanding by the development of engineering plastics with good mechanical properties. Plastic gears have excellent performances such as light weight, water resistance and vibration absorbing ability for metallic gears. In this study, the optimization of injection molding process was done for the large disk type plastic gears of auto phoropter. Design Of Experiment (Taguchi method) was adopted to find a tendency of molding conditions that influence the flatness of disk type gear. Four main factors for molding conditions were selected based on injection temperature, filling time, packing pressure and mold temperature. Also, Filling, packing and cooling analyses were carried out to evaluate Z directional deflection of large disk type gear by using the simulation software (Moldflow) based on the DOE. From the results, it was found that the injection temperature and packing pressure are the most sensitive parameters for the Z directional deflection of large disk type gears.

  • It is suggested that a flying-by star in a hot accretion disk may cool the hot accretion disk by the Comptonization of the stellar emission. Such a stellar cooling can be observed in the radio frequency regime since synchrotron luminosity depends strongly on the electron temperature of the accretion flow. If a bright star orbiting around the supermassive black hole cools the hot disk, one should expect a quasi-periodic modulation in radio, or even possible an anti-correlation of luminosities in radio and X-rays. Recently, the unprecedentedly accurate infrared imaging of the Sagittarius A$\ast$ for about ten years enables us to resolve stars around it and thus determine orbital parameters of the currently closest star S2. We explore the possibility of using such kind of observation to distinguish two quite different physical models for the central engine of the Sagittarius A$\ast$, that is, a hot accretion disk model and a jet model. We have attempted to estimate the observables using the observed parameters of the star S2. The relative difference in the electron temperature is a few parts of a thousand at the epoch when the star S2 is near at the pericenter. The relative radio luminosity difference with and without the stellar cooling is also small of order $10^{-4}$, particularly even when the star S2 is near at the pericenter. On the basis of our findings we tentatively conclude that even the currently closest pass of the star S2 is insufficiently close enough to meaningfully constrain the nature of the Sagittarius A$\ast$ and distinguish two competing models. This implies that even though Bower et al. (2002)have found no periodic radio flux variations in their data set from 1981 to 1998, which is naturally expected from the presence of a hot disk, a hot disk model cannot be conclusively ruled out. This is simply because the energy bands they have studied are too high to observe the effect of the star S2 even if it indeed interacts with the hot disk. In other words, even if there is a hot accretion disk the star like S2 has imprints in the frequency range at v $\le$ 100 MHz.

  • Cause and the elimination method for the chattering phenomena were investigated the check valve attached exit of the auxiliary cooling water pump at a korean nuclear powerplant. From the site experiment and numerical calculation the incident angle of the disk was so small that it was not able to produce the lifting force to overcome the component of disk weight. Moreover, it turned out that the installed position was not symmetric for the secondary vortical flow generated inside the elbow, so that the flow structure had strongly unstable flow characteristics. From this technical support, the tapping noise and the chattering phenomena were eliminated exactly by changing the incidence angle of the valve disk and installed position of the check valve.

  • A computer code was developed to simulate all three stages of the injection molding process ? filling, packing and cooling by finite element method. The constitutive equation used here was compressible Leonov model. The PVT relationship was assumed to follow the Tait equation. The flow-induced birefringence was related to the calculated flow stresses through the linear stress-optical law. Based on the simulation, the Taguchi method was used to investigate the influences of injection molding conditions on the birefringence of a center gate disk. In addition, the optimal processing conditions were selected to minimize the birefringence and the birefringence difference along the positions of the disk.
