  • In this study, we discussed about the application of the single physical and chemical treatment processes and the physical-chemical complex treatment processes on the inactivation of Artemia sp. in order to satisfy the USCG Phase II (United States Coast Guard). The results showed that initial disinfection rate of ultrasonic process in single batch process is higher than that of electrolysis. However, the inactivation rate showed slower than electrolysis. The inactivation rate of Artemia sp. on the single continuous treatment process ranked in the following order: homogenizer > electrolysis > ultrasonic process. Inactivation rate of Artemia sp. in continuous homogenizer-electrolysis complex process was reached at 100% immediately. A synergistic effect of ultrasonic-electrolytic complex process was found to be a small. The order of processes in a complex process did not affect the disinfection performance.

  • There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of sewage. This has compelled scientists to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a effective disinfection process. Electrolysis has emerged as one of the more feasible alternatives to conventional disinfection process. The objectives of the present paper were to investigate the effect of chemical characteristics on oxidant formation and Escherichia coli (E. coli) disinfection in synthetic sewage effluents. The influence of parameters such as COD, SS, T-N and T-P were investigated using laboratory scale batch reactor. The results showed that the higher COD, T-N and T-P concentration, the lower N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation and E. coli disinfection was observed. The order of effect of RNO degradation and E. coli disinfection was T-P > COD > T-N > SS. When 4 parameter of water quality were worked simultaneously, oxidants formation and disinfection was decreased with increase of the concentration of sewage. To increase of the disinfection performance, the increase of disinfection time or electric power was need.

  • With the appearance of pathogenic microorganisms, which were resistant to free chlorine, the significant attention to the necessity of powerful alternative disinfection methods such as ozone, chlorine dioxide, LTV irradiation to inactivating pathogens has been increased in water treatment. Among these alternative disinfection methods, ozone is well known as strong biocidal method and the usage of ozone is also increasing in Korea. However, in Korea, there has been no report on the quantitative study of Cryptosporidium parvum with ozone and its evaluation in advanced drinking water treatments. This study reports on the methodology for predicting the ozone inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum by ozone disinfection in advanced drinking water treatment. The method is based on the fact that a specific inactivation level of microorganisms is achieved at a unique value of ozone exposures, independent of ozone dose and type of water, and quantitatively described by a delayed Chick-Watson model. The required values ${\bar{C}}T$ for 2 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum was $6.0mg/L{\cdot}min$ and $15.5mg/L{\cdot}min$ at $20^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. From this obtained Cryptosporidium parvum inactivation curves and calculated ${\bar{C}}T$ values of advanced drinking water treatment water in Korea with FIA (Flow injection alaysis), we can predict that water treatment plant can achieve a 1.1~1.8 log inactivation and 0~0.4 log inactivation at $20^{\circ}C$ and $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. This methodology will be useful for drinking water treatment plants which intend to evaluate the disinfection efficiencies of their ozonation process without full scale test and direct experiments with Cryptosporidium parvum.

  • The effect of ozone on the formation and the removal of disinfection byproducts(DBPs) of chlorination process was studied to elucidate the performance of water treatment process. The samples of raw water, prechlorination process, and preozonation process were analyzed quantitatively according to the Standard Methods for the Examination of drinking water. As a result, most of total trihalomethanes(THMs) which were formed in prechlorine treatment process was not removed in the preozonation process. Most of haloacetic acids(HAAs), haloacetonitriles(HANs), and chloral hydrate(CH) was removed in sedimentation and biological activated carbon(BAC) filtration processes. However, DBPs were increased more or less by postchlorine step. In particular, the formation of THMs and HAAs depends on ozone more than chlorine, but, the formation of HANs and CH depends on chlorine more than ozone. The seasonal variation of DBPs concentration for the year needs to be investigated to study the temperature effect because DBPs strongly depend on temperature among various efficient factors.

  • It was conducted to find out the effect of chemical treatment on seed tubers and soil to control potato common scab in Jeju Island in 2001. Although the treatment of soil disinfection with Dazomet Gr. (30kg/10a) was more effective comparing to the treatment of seed disinfection and the untreated, the control value was merely 40.5%. However, the combined treatment of soil and seed disinfection was considerably more effective to reduce the percentage of infection and infection area, and increase the production of marketable tubers and also increase the control value. Therefore, the combined treatments are demanded to reduce the scab incidence in Jeju field conditions.

  • This study investigated the inactivation of the total coliform, an indicator organism in chlorine dioxide, in order to assess the optimal disinfection procedure for drinking water treatment and distribution systems. This research focus on a number of factors, including the dosage of disinfectant, contact time, pH, temperature and DOC. Water samples were taken from the outlet of a settling basin at a conventional surface water treatment system. As the pH increased in the range of pH 6-9, the bactericidal effects of disinfectants decreased. Changes in levels of pH did not significantly after the disinfection effect of chlorine dioxide for total coliform. With an increase in temperature, there was a subsequent increase in the bactericidal effects of disinfectants. Thus, it is evident that a decrease in temperature will higher the CT values required to inactivate coliform for during the winter. DOC addition can also reduce total coliform inactivation. DOC is the most significant variable in total coliform inactivation with chlorine dioxide.

  • UV disinfection is widely used in water treatment facilities and wastewater treatment plant because of its effectiveness to removal of pathogen and Giardia which is resistant to traditional chemical disinfection. As a design and performance tool of UV disinfection system, 3 dimensional UV intensity models were composed and simulated to compare each other and to find affecting factors in this study. Reflection, refraction and absorption are important parameters in UV intensity model and MPSS and MSSS model can reflect these parameters while LSI model can not. Absorption is the most important parameters among the reflection, refraction, absorption and shadowing so, this should not be neglect. Based on this simulation, shadowing effect is negligible when the number of installed lamp is a few but, this effect can not be neglectable when the number of installed lamp is quite a few. The errors according to shadowing effect is increased as the number of lamp installed increased.

  • The International Maritime Organization (IMO) ballast water management agreement (International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediments) came into force on September 8, 2017. This study evaluated the disinfection performance of electrolysis, UV treatment, and electrolysis + UV combined, to improve the treatment of zooplankton (size ≥ 50 ㎛), which is expected to strengthen the standards for biodegradation efficiency. Among the methods used, the disinfection time leading to 100% death was in the order: electrolysis > electrolysis + UV > UV process. For the same level of disinfection performance, the amount of electricity required for the electrolysis, UV, and electrolysis + UV processes were 1,300 W.s, 8,400 W.S, and 4,500 W.s, respectively. The combination of electrolysis + UV process for inactivation of zooplankton in ballast water did not show a synergic effect owing to the slow disinfection time and high power consumption.

  • Objectives: To comparatively evaluate the efficacy of photo-activated disinfection (PAD), calcium hydroxide (CH) and their combination on the treatment outcome of indirect pulp treatment (IPT). Materials and Methods: Institutional ethical clearance and informed consent of the patients were taken. The study was also registered with clinical registry of India. Sixty permanent molars exhibiting deep occlusal carious lesion in patients with the age range of 18 - 22 yr were included. Clinical and radiographic evaluation and set inclusion and exclusion criteria's were followed. Gross caries excavation was accomplished. In group I (n = 20) PAD was applied for sixty seconds. In group II (n = 20), CH was applied to the remaining carious dentin, while in group III (n = 20), PAD application was followed by CH placement. The teeth were permanently restored. They were clinically and radiographically followed-up at 45 day, 6 mon and 12 mon. Relative density of the remaining affected dentin was measured by 'Radiovisiography (RVG) densitometric' analysis. Results: Successful outcome with an increase in radiographic grey values were observed in all three groups. However, on inter-group comparison, this change was not significant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: PAD and CH both have equal disinfection efficacy in the treatment of deep carious dentin. PAD alone is as effective for treatment of deep carious lesion as calcium hydroxide and hence can be used as an alternative to CH. They can be used independently in IPT, since combining both does not offer any additional therapeutic benefits.

  • The industrial techniques of ultrasound have been used in the various fields, such as cleaning, medical surgery, emulsification, cell disruption etc. Especially the application of cell disruption was interested in the field of disinfection process in water by ultrasonic irradiation. It has been recognized that the ultrasounds are irradiated in aqueous solution, cavitation bubbles are generated and shock waves of high temperature and pressure are emitted as the bubbles are developed and finally broken, which function as a energy source to promote reaction efficiencies of various kinds of chemical reactions such as disinfection reaction in water. Therefore, this study was performed to apply the ultrasound for the disinfection method of infected drinking raw water and to discuss the limiting factors such as pH, sample volume and reaction temperature influenced on the removal efficiency of E. coli from experimental analysis of the results obtained in bench-scale plant. For the experiments to measure the influence of reaction parameters in the ultrasonic disinfection process, escalated reactivity of aqueous solutions was excellent when pH in aqueous solution was low, and sample volume was small. On the contrary, the reactivity of disinfection became elevated when reaction temperature was high. It was found that the rate constant of disinfection reaction was applied by Chick's law, reaction kinetics of Chick's law was irreversible and pseudo-first order at all the tested conditions. As a conclusion it appeared that the technology using ultrasonic irradiation can be applied to the treatment of disinfection in infected water which are difficult to be treated by conventional methods.
