Purpose: This study aimed to identify latent classes based on major modifiable risk factors for coronary artery disease. Methods: This was a secondary analysis using data from the electronic medical records of 2,022 patients, who were newly diagnosed with coronary artery disease at a university medical center, from January 2010 to December 2015. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 for descriptive analysis and Mplus version 7.4 for latent class analysis. Results: Four latent classes of risk factors for coronary artery disease were identified in the final model: 'smoking-drinking', 'high-risk for dyslipidemia', 'high-risk for metabolic syndrome', and 'high-risk for diabetes and malnutrition'. The likelihood of these latent classes varied significantly based on socio-demographic characteristics, including age, gender, educational level, and occupation. Conclusion: The results showed significant heterogeneity in the pattern of risk factors for coronary artery disease. These findings provide helpful data to develop intervention strategies for the effective prevention of coronary artery disease. Specific characteristics depending on the subpopulation should be considered during the development of interventions.
To develop a model for prediction of turnip mosaic virus(TuMV) disease progress of Chinese cabbage based on weather information and number of TuMV vector aphids trapped in Taegwallyeong alpine area, data were statistically processed together. As the variables influenced on TuMV disease progress, cumulative portion(CPT) above 13$^{\circ}C$ in daily average temperature was the most significant, and solar radiation, duration of sunshine, vector aphids and cumulative temperature above $0^{\circ}C$ were significant. When logistic model and Gompertz model were compared by detemining goodness of fit for TuMV disease progress using CPT as independent variable, regression coefficient was higher in the logistic model than in the Gompertz model. Epidemic parameters, apparent infection rate and initial value of logistic model, were estimated by examining the relationship between disease proportion linearized by logit transformation equation, In(Y/Yf-Y) and CPT. Models able to describe the progression of TuMV disease were formulated in Y=100/(1+128.4 exp(-0.013.CPT.(-1(1/(1+66.7.exp(-0.11.day). Calculated disease progress from the model was in good agreement with investigated actual disease progress showing high significance of the coefficient of determination with 0.710.
The morphology of a bone is closely associated with its biomechanical response. Thus, much research has been focused on analyzing the effects of variation of bone morphology with subject-specific models. Subject-specific models, which are generally achieved from 3D imaging devices like CT and MRI, incorporate more of the detailed information that makes a model unique. Hence, it may predict individual responses more accurately. Despite these powerful characteristics, specific models are not easily parameterized to the extent possible with statistical models because of their morphologic complexities. Thus, it is still proven challenging to analyze morphologic variations of subject-specific models across changes due to aging or disease. The aim of this article is to propose a generic and robust parametric morphing method for a subject-specific bone structure. We demonstrate this by using the proposed method on a model of a human proximal femur. Automatic segmentation algorithms are also presented to parameterize the specific model efficiently. A total of 48 femur models were evaluated for defining morphing vector fields. Also, several anatomical and mechanical functions of femur were considered as morphing constraints, and the NURBS interpolating technique was applied in the method to guarantee the generality of our morphed results.
Two-dimensional (2D) cell culture and in vivo cancer model systems have been used to understand cancer biology and develop drug delivery systems for cancer therapy. Although cell culture and in vivo model studies have provided critical contribution about disease mechanism, these models present important problems. 2D tissue culture models lack of three dimensional (3D) structure, while animal models are expensive, time consuming, and inadequate to reflect human tumor biology. Up to the present, scaffolds and 3D matrices have been used for many different clinical applications in regenerative medicine such as heart valves, corneal implants and artificial cartilage. While tissue engineering has focused on clinical applications in regenerative medicine, scaffolds can be used in in vitro tumor models to better understand tumor relapse and metastasis. Because 3D in vitro models can partially mimic the tumor microenvironment as follows. This review focuses on different scaffold production techniques and polymer types for tumor model applications in cancer tissue engineering and reports recent studies about in vitro 3D polymeric tumor models including breast, ewing sarcoma, pancreas, oral, prostate and brain cancers.

Free radicals and oxidative stress playa crucial role in the pathophysiology of a broad spectrum of cardiovascular diseases including congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, hypertrophy, atherosclerosis and ischemic heart disease. We have demonstrated that IH 636 proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) provides excellent protection against free radicals in both in vitro and in vivo models, and exhibits significantly better efficacy as compared to vitamins C, E and $\beta$-carotene.(omitted)

Minocycline is known to protect neurons from microglia-mediated cell death in many experimental models of brain diseases including ischemic stroke, Huntington's disease (HD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease. Activation of caspase-2, 3, 8, and 9 was evident within 2-8 hr following oxidative insult with 0.5 mM hydrogen peroxide in PC12 cells. Minocycline significantly attenuated activation of these caspases up to 18 hr, resulting a significant increase in cell viability as assessed by MTT assay. (omitted)
In order to help smokers quit easier, China has started to provide quitline service since 2004. There are two models for Chinese quitline service-the National Quitline Model, which provides only cessation service to smokers, and the 12320 Hotline Model, which integrates cessation counseling into public health hotline service and is currently adapted in public health hotlines in 28 provinces. A protocol of 4 counseling calls is used by 12320 Hotline. Three-month abstinence rate for clients is about 20%. The fact that most smokers who attempted quit don't seek cessation help or quitline service is not well known by the public are major constraints for quitline service in China. Effective advocating campaign should be implemented to propagate quitline. Diverse protocols targeting different subpopulation will also need to be developed to better service the public.
Mitophagy, the selective degradation of damaged or surplus mitochondria using core autophagy machinery, plays an essential role in maintaining cellular mitochondrial function. Impaired mitophagy is closely linked to various human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and kidney disease. Defective mitophagy induces the accumulation of damaged mitochondria and thereby results in a decline in cellular survival and tissue function. Accordingly, enhancement of mitophagy has been proposed as a novel strategy for the treatment of human diseases closely linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. Recent studies showing that the stimulation of mitophagy has a therapeutic effect on several disease models highlight the possibility of disease treatment using mitophagy. The development of mitophagy inducers with toxicity and the identification of molecular mechanisms will enable the clinical application of mitophagy-based treatments.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) involves persistent inflammation and fibrosis, leading to respiratory failure and even death. Adult tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) show potential in ILD therapeutics but obtaining an adequate quantity of cells for drug application is difficult. Daewoong Pharmaceutical's MSCs (DW-MSCs) derived from embryonic stem cells sustain a high proliferative capacity following long-term culture and expansion. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic potential of DW-MSCs in experimental mouse models of ILD. DW-MSCs were expanded up to 12 passages for in vivo application in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis and collagen-induced connective tissue disease-ILD mouse models. We assessed lung inflammation and fibrosis, lung tissue immune cells, fibrosis-related gene/protein expression, apoptosis and mitochondrial function of alveolar epithelial cells, and mitochondrial transfer ability. Intravenous administration of DWMSCs consistently improved lung fibrosis and reduced inflammatory and fibrotic markers expression in both models across various disease stages. The therapeutic effect of DW-MSCs was comparable to that following daily oral administration of nintedanib or pirfenidone. Mechanistically, DW-MSCs exhibited immunomodulatory effects by reducing the number of B cells during the early phase and increasing the ratio of Tregs to Th17 cells during the late phase of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Furthermore, DW-MSCs exhibited anti-apoptotic effects, increased cell viability, and improved mitochondrial respiration in alveolar epithelial cells by transferring their mitochondria to alveolar epithelial cells. Our findings indicate the strong potential of DW-MSCs in the treatment of ILD owing to their high efficacy and immunomodulatory and anti-apoptotic effects.
Pattern recognition is one of the most common problems encountered in engineering and scientific disciplines, which involves developing prediction or classification models from historic data or training samples. This paper introduces a new approach, called the Representational Capability (RC) algorithm, to handle pattern recognition problems using radial basis function (RBF) models. The RC algorithm has been developed based on the mathematical properties of the interpolation and design matrices of RBF models. The model development process based on this algorithm not only yields the best model in the sense of balancing its parsimony and generalization ability, but also provides insights into the design process by employing a design parameter (${\delta}$). We discuss the RC algorithm and its use at length via an illustrative example. In addition, RBF classification models are developed for heart disease diagnosis.
