  • The impact of raindrops on the soil surface causes soil detachment, which may be estimated by measuring the kinetic energy (KE) of the raindrops. Since direct measurements of rainfall force on ground surfaces are not generally available, empirical equations are an alternative option to estimate KE from rainfall intensity (I), which has the greatest influence over soil erosion and is easily accessible. Establishing the optimal formulation for the relationship between kinetic energy and rainfall intensity has proven to be difficult. Thus, this research considered thirty-seven rainfall events observed from June 2020 to December 2021 using a laster optical disdrometer erected in Kyungpook National University to examine the characteristics of KE-I relationships. We concentrated our discussion on the formation of two different expressions of the KE, including KE expenditure (KEexp) and KE content (KEcon). The following conclusions were drawn: (1) We employed statistical analysis to demonstrate that the KEexp is more suitable expression for establishing an empirical rule between KE and I than the KEcon. (2) A power-law model was used to find the best correlation between KEexp-I relationship, whereas the best match between KEcon and I were found using an exponential equation.

  • The methods measuring the precipitation drop size distribution(hereafter referred to as DSD) at Cloud Physics Observation System (CPOS) in Daegwallyeong are to use PARSIVEL (PARticle SIze and VELocity) disdrometer (hereafter referred to as PARSIVEL) and Micro Rain Radar (hereafter referred to as MRR). First of all, PARSIVEL and MRR give good correlation coefficients between their rain rates and those of rain gage: $R^2=0.93$ and 0.91, respectively. For the DSD, the rain rates are classified in 3 categories (Category 1: rr (Rain Rate) ${\leq}0.5\;mm\;h^{-1}$, Category 2: $0.5\;mm\;h^-1$ < rr < $4.0\;mm\;h^{-1}$, Category 3: rr ${\geq}4\;mm\;h^{-1}$). The shapes of PARSIVEL and MRR DSD are relatively most similar in category 2. In addition, we retrieve the vertical rain rate and liquid water content from MRR under melting layer, calculated by Cha et al's method, in Daegwallyeong ($37^{\circ}41{\prime}N$, $128^{\circ}45^{\prime}E$, 843 m ASL, mountain area) and Haenam ($34^{\circ}33^{\prime}N$, $126^{\circ}34^{\prime}E$, 4.6 m ASL, coast area). The vertical variations of rain rate and liquid water content in Daegwallyeong are smaller than those in Haenam. We think that this different vertical rain rate characteristic for both sites is due to the vertical different cloud type (convective and stratiform cloud seem dominant at Haenam and Daegwallyeong, respectively). This suggests that the statistical precipitation DSD model, for the application of weather radar and numerical simulation of precipitation processes, be considered differently for the region, which will be performed in near future.

  • Dual-polarization can distinguish precipitation type and dual-polarization is provide not only meteorological phenomena in the atmosphere but also non-precipitation echoes. Therefore dual-polarization radar can improve radar estimates of rainfall. However polarimetric measurements by transmitting vertically vibration waves and horizontally vibrating waves simultaneously is contain systematic bias of the radar itself. Thus the calibration bias is necessary to improve quantitative precipitation estimation. In this study, the calibration bias of reflectivity (Z) and differential reflectivity ($Z_{DR}$) from the Bislsan dual-polarization radar is calculated using the 2-Dimensional Video Disdrometer (2DVD) data. And an improvement in rainfall estimation is investigated by applying derived calibration bias. A total of 33 rainfall cases occurring in Daegu from 2011 to 2012 were selected. As a results, the calibration bias of Z is about -0.3 to 5.5 dB, and $Z_{DR}$ is about -0.1 dB to 0.6 dB. In most cases, the Bislsan radar generally observes Z and $Z_{DR}$ variables lower than the simulated variables. Before and after calibration bias, compared estimated rainfall from the dual-polarization radar with AWS rain gauge in Daegu found that the mean bias has fallen by 1.69 to 1.54 mm/hr, and the RMSE has decreased by 2.54 to 1.73 mm/hr. And estimated rainfall comparing to the surface rain gauge as ground truth, rainfall estimation is improved about 7-61%.

  • The erosive potential of precipitation can be evaluated by the kinetic energy transferred to the soil by the impact of the rain drop. A kinetic energy rate of the rain drops was estimated by the disdrometer classifying impact signals. This equation in the form of power presented an adjustment measure between the rain rate and rainfall quantity of 97% and 95% for continental and maritime rains, respectively. The exponent of the power equation, initially, shows no dependence on the type of rainfall. However, the multiplicative factor presented variation, which can be adjusted according to rainfall events. This equation was validated by the coefficient of determination, the average absolute error and the confidence error. The kinetic energy of precipitation, associated to certain types of soil, will allow the determination of the potential of the erosion caused by the rains.

  • This study analyzes Two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) data while summer 2011-2012 in Daegu region and compares with Marshall and Palmer (MP) distribution to find out statistical characteristics and characteristics variability about drop size distribution (DSD) of Daegu region. As the characterize DSD of Daegu region, this study uses single moment parameters such as rainfall intensity (R), reflectivity factor (Z) and double moment parameters such as generalized characteristics number concentration ($N{_0}^{\prime}$) and generalized characteristics diameter ($D{_m}^{\prime}$). Also, this study makes an assumption that DSD function can be expressed as general gamma distribution. The results of analysis show that DSD of Daegu region has ${\log}_{10}N{_0}^{\prime}=2.37$, $D{_m}^{\prime}=1.04mm$, and c =2.37, ${\mu}=0.39$ on average. When the assumption of MP distribution is used, these figures then end up with the different characteristics; ${\log}_{10}N{_0}^{\prime}=2.27$, $D{_m}^{\prime}=0.9mm$, c =1, ${\mu}=1$ on average. The differences indicate liquid water content (LWC) of Daegu distribution is generally larger than MP distribution at equal Z. Second, DSD shape of Daegu distribution is concave upward. Other important facts are the characteristics of Daegu distribution change when Z changes. DSD shape of Daegu region changes concave downward (c =2.05~2.55, ${\mu}=0.33{\sim}0.77$) to cubic function-like shape (c =3.0, ${\mu}=-0.13{\sim}-0.33$) at Z > 45 dBZ. 35 dBZ ${\leq}$ Z > 45 dBZ group of Daegu distribution has characteristics similar to maritime cluster of diverse climate DSD study. However, Z > 45 dBZ group of Daegu distribution has a difference from the cluster.

  • In this study, a model of rainfall drop-size distribution was modified using PARSIVEL-retrieved rainfall drop-size distribution over Daegwanryeong mountainous area. A prototype model (Modified ${\Gamma}$ distribution model) applicable for this area was decided through the comparative analysis between results from models proposed by preceding research and PARSIVEL-retrieved data over Daegwanryeong mountainous area. In order to apply the prototype model for Daegwanryeong region, the parameters (${\alpha}$, A, B) were made via sensitivity experiments and models of the rainfall drop-size distributions for five cases of rainfall rate were proposed. Results from the proposed five models showed high correlations with PARSIVEL-retrieved data ($R^2=0.975$). In order to suggest a generalized form of rainfall drop-size distribution, interaction equations between rainfall rates and parameters (${\alpha}$, A, B) were investigated. The generalized model of the rainfall drop-size distribution was highly correlated with PARSIVEL-retrieved data ($R^2=0.953$), which means that the proposed model from this study was effective for simulating the rainfall drop-size distribution over Daegwanryeong region. However, the proposed model was optimized for rainfall drop-size distribution over Daegwanryeong region. Therefore, broad observations of other regions are necessary in order to develop the representative model of the Korean peninsula.

  • To evaluate the kinetic energy of the raindrops, the drop size distribution and the terminal velocity of the raindrops had been measured from January to September 2010 using the laser-optical disdrometer in KIGAM, Daejeon, Korea. The relationship between kinetic energy (KE) and rainfall intensity (I) was computed as logarithmic and exponential model, respectively, under the rainfall intensity of about 142mm/h. The exponential model is more suitable for the relationship of KE-I than the logarithmic model, because the exponential model presented better fit for KE over 50mm/h of rainfall intensity. Meanwhile, the differences of the total kinetic energy existed in rainfall events with almost same total rainfall depth, and KE values of Daejeon at high rainfall intensity underestimated rather than the others under temperate climate. Therefore, these differences of KE in rainfall events and geographical regions imply the result from the variations of rainfall intensity within a rainfall event.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyse the influence factors of snowfall enhancement by glaciogenic seeding in a mountainous area. Twenty-five seeding experiments have been conducted during the period of February to April 2010. To use two rates seeding experiments (SR1: $1.04g\;min^{-1}$, SR2: $2.08g\;min^{-1}$) have been tested to get an appropriate ratio for snowfall enhancement at Daegwallyeong area. The conditions of seeding are able as followings: surface temperature <$0^{\circ}C$, wind speed <5 m/s, wind direction between 0 and $130^{\circ}$. The experiment results indicated that in the case of SR1 was more effective than SR2. The number of small ice particles below 1.0 mm was increased during seeding period measured by PARSIVEL disdrometer near generator. Most of snowfall enhancement by seeding was observed the inflow of the easterly wind blew in toward Gangwon regions from the East Sea and the supersaturated supercooled liquid water due to orographic effect.
