This study investigated the degree of understanding pre-service teachers' random variable concept, based on the attention and the importance for developing pre-service teachers' ability on statistical reasoning in statistics education. To accomplish this, the subject of this study was 70 pre-service teachers belonged to three universities respectively. The teachers were given to 7 tasks on random variable and requested to solve them in 40 minutes. The tasks consisted of three contents in large; 1) one was on the definition of random variables, 2) the other was on the understanding of random variables in different/diverse conditions, and 3) another was on problem solving relevant to random variable concept. The findings are as follows. First, while 20% of pre-service teachers understood the definition of random variable correctly, most teachers could not distinguish between random variable and variable or probability. Second, there was a significant difference in understanding random variables in different/diverse conditions. Namely, the degree of understanding on the continuous random variable was superior to that of discrete random variable and also the degree of understanding on the equal distribution was superior to that of unequality distribution. Third, three types of problems relevant to random variable concept dealt with in this study were finding a sample space and an elementary event, and finding a probability value. In result, the teachers responded to the problem on finding a probability value most correctly and on the contrary to this, they had the mot difficulty in solving the problem on finding a sample space.

Inverters are considered the basic building blocks of industrial electrical drive systems that are widely used for various applications; however, the failure of electronic switches mainly affects the constancy of these inverters. For safe and reliable operation of an electrical drive system, faults in power electronic switches must be detected by an efficient system that is capable of identifying the type of faults. In this paper, an open switch fault identification technique for a three-phase inverter is presented. Single, double, and triple switching faults can be diagnosed using this method. The detection mechanism is based on stator current analysis. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) using Daubechies is performed on the Clarke transformed (-) stator current and features are extracted from the wavelets. An artificial neural network is then used for the detection and identification of faults. To prove the feasibility of this method, a Simulink model of the DWT-based feature extraction scheme using a neural network for the proposed fault detection system in a three-phase inverter with an induction motor is briefly discussed with simulation results. The simulation results show that the designed system can detect faults quite efficiently, with the ability to differentiate between single and multiple switching faults.
The weighting strategy has received a great attention and has been widely applied to multicriterion optimization. This gaper examines a global criterion method (GCM) with the weighting objectives strategy in fuzzy structural engineering problems. Fuzziness of those problems are in their design goals, constraints and variables. Most of the constraints are originated from analysis of engineering mechanics. The GCM is verified to be equivalent to fuzzy goal programming via a truss design. Continued and mixed discrete variable spaces are presented and examined using a fuzzy global criterion method (FGCM). In the design process a weighting parameter with fuzzy information is introduced into the design and decision making. We use a uniform machine-tool spindle as an illustrative example in continuous design space. Fuzzy multicriterion optimization in mixed design space is illustrated by the design of mechanical spring stacks. Results show that weighting strategy in FGCM can generate both the best compromise solution and a set of Pareto solutions in fuzzy environment. Weighting technique with fuzziness provides a more relaxed design domain, which increases the satisfying degree of a compromise solution or improves the final design.

In this paper, current control using PI controller in the synchronous reference frame is analyzed through the relationship among bandwidth, resonance frequency, and sampling frequency in the grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. Stability is investigated by using bode plot in frequency domain and root locus in discrete domain. The feedback variable is the grid current, which is regulated by the PI controller in the synchronous reference frame. System delay is modeled as 1.5Ts, which contains computational and PWM modulator delay. Two resonance frequencies are given at 815 Hz and 3.16 kHz from LCL filter parameters. Sufficient phase and gain margins can be obtained to guarantee stable current control, in case that resonance frequency is above one-sixth of the sampling frequency. Unstable current control is performed when resonance frequency is below one-sixth of the sampling frequency. Analysis results of stability from frequency response and discrete response is the same regardless of resonance frequency. Finally, stability of current control based on theoretical analysis is clearly verified through simulation and experiment in grid-connected inverters with LCL filter.
In density-based topology optimization, 0/1 solutions are sought. Discrete topological problems are often relaxed with continuous design variables so that they can be solved using continuous mathematical programming. Although the relaxed methods are practical, grey areas appear in the optimum topologies. SIMP (Solid Isotropic Microstructures with Penalization) employs penalty schemes to suppress the intermediate densities. SRV (the Sum of the Reciprocal Variables) drives the solution to a 0/1 layout with the SRV constraint. However, both methods cannot effectively remove all the grey areas. SRV has some numerical aspects. In this work, a new scheme SIMP-SRV is proposed by combining SIMP and SRV approaches, where SIMP is employed to generate an intermediate solution to initialize the design variables and SRV is then adopted to produce the final design. The new method turned out to be very effective in conjunction with the method of moving asymptotes (MMA) when using for the stiffness topology optimization of continuum structures for minimum compliance. The numerical examples show that the hybrid technique can effectively remove all grey areas and generate stiffer optimal designs characterized with a sharper boundary in contrast to SIMP and SRV.

The configuration optimization is a structural optimization method which includes the coordinates of a structure as well as the sectional properties in the design variable set. Effective reduction of the weight of discrete structures can be obrained by changing the geometry while satisfying stress, Ei;er bickling, displacement, and frequency constraints, etc. However, the nonlinearity due to the configuration variables may cause the difficulties of the convergence and expensive computational cost. An efficient approximation method for the configuration optimization has been developed to overcome the difficulties. The method approximates the constraint functions based onthe second-order Taylor series expansion with reciprocal design variables. The Hessian matrix is approzimated from the information on previous design points. The developed algotithms are coded and the examples are solved.

Nowadays, the characterization of Ultra-High Performance Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) tensile behavior still remains a challenge for researchers. For this purpose, a simplified closed-form non-linear hinge model based on the Third Point Bending Test (ThirdPBT) was developed by the authors. This model has been used as the basis of a simplified inverse analysis methodology to derive the tensile material properties from load-deflection response obtained from ThirdPBT experimental tests. In this paper, a non-linear finite element model (FEM) is presented with the objective of validate the closed-form non-linear hinge model. The state determination of the closed-form model is straightforward, which facilitates further inverse analysis methodologies to derive the tensile properties of UHPFRC. The accuracy of the closed-form non-linear hinge model is validated by a robust non-linear FEM analysis and a set of 15 Third-Point Bending tests with variable depths and a constant slenderness ratio of 4.5. The numerical validation shows excellent results in terms of load-deflection response, bending curvatures and average longitudinal strains when resorting to the discrete crack approach.
This paper estimates household demand for electricity using a micro-level household expenditure data set. A two-stage estimation method where the endogenous block price estimates are obtained from a discrete block choice model is used. This method successfully identifies a downward sloping conditional demand function with the data, while both the usual two-stage method with instrumental variable estimation and the Hewitt-Hanemann discrete-continuous model fail to do that. The paper simulates the impacts of two hypothetical pricing reforms that reduce the number of blocks and make the price gap smaller. It is shown that the reform may increase the overall consumer benefit, but is regressive.
In recent decades, it has been known that the Discrete Event System Specification, or DEVS, formalism provides sound semantics to design a modular and hierarchical model of a discrete event system. In spite of this benefit, practitioners have difficulties in applying the semantics to real-world systems modeling because DEVS needs to specify a large size of sets of events and/or states in an unstructured form. To resolve the difficulties, this paper proposes an extension of the DEVS formalism, called the Structured DEVS formalism, with an associated graphical representation, called the DEVS diagram, by means of structural representation of such sets based on closure property of set theory. The proposed formalism is proved to be equivalent to the original DEVS formalism in their model specification, yet the new formalism specifies sets in a structured form with a concept of phases, variables and ports. A simplified example of the structured DEVS with the DEVS diagram shows the effectiveness of the proposed formalism which can be easily implemented in an objected-oriented simulation environment.

A non-decimation second-order spatial moving average (SMA) discrete-time (DT) filter is proposed with reconfigurable null frequencies. The filter coefficients are changeable, and it can be controlled by switching sampling capacitors. So, interferers can be rejected effectively by flexible nulls. Since it operates without decimation, it does not change the sample rate and aliasing problem can be avoided. The filter is designed with variable weight of coefficients as $1:{\alpha}:1$ where ${\alpha}$ varies from 1 to 2. This corresponds to the change of null frequencies within the range of fs/3~fs/2 and fs/2~2fs/3. The proposed filter is implemented in the TSMC 0.18-${\mu}m$ CMOS process. Simulation shows that null frequencies are changeable in the range of 0.38~0.49fs and 0.51~0.62fs.
