  • The vacuum-annealed Ni80Fe20/Ag discontinuous multilayers were found to show giant magnetoresistive behaviors comparable to those of corresponding multilayers annealed at atmospheric pressure in a mixture of H2 and Ar. This vacuum-annealing process will offer potential advantages, enabling a continuous batch process from the deposition to the annealing. Their giant magnetoresistive behaviors were attributed to the magnetostatic coupling that are induced at the edges of the discontinuous magnetic grains. We also present our results about the multilayer patterned into a basic device for the magnetic field sensor.

  • Microstructure and magnetic transport phenomina in rf sputtered AlN/Co type ten-layered discontinuous films of nanoscaled [AlN (3 nm)/Co (t nm)]...$\sub$10/ with t$\sub$Co/=1.0∼2.0 nm have been investigated. The microstructure and tunneling magnetic resistance of the samples are strongly dependent on the thickness of Co layer. Negative tunneling magneto-resistance due to the spin-dependent transport has been observed along the current-in-plane configuration in the samples having the Co layers below 1.6 nm thick. When the thickness of Co layer was less than 1,2 nm, randomly oriented granular Co particles were completely isolated and embedded in amorphous AlN matrix, and the films showed the superparamagnetic behavior with a high MR value of Δ$\rho$/$\rho$$\sub$0/=1.8 %. As t$\sub$Co/ increases, a transition from the regime of co-existence of superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic behaviors to ferromagnetic behavior was observed. Tunneling barrier called "decay length for tunneling" for the films having the thickness of Co layer from 1.4 to 1.6 nm was measured to be ranged from 0.004 to 0.021 ${\AA}$$\^$-1/.

  • Structural, magnetic and magnetoresistance behavior of NiFe/Ag multilayers prepared by a magnetron sputter under an Ar and $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere was studied. It was difficult to make a uniform multilayer by using an Ar atmosphere. However, the uniform multilayers could be fabricated by using an $Ar/H_2$ atmosphere. This was thought to be due to decrease in the energy of the sputtered atom and Ar content of the film. Typical magnetoresistance behavior of the discontinuous NiFe/Ag multilayers appeared when the uniform multilayer was formed and annealed. Substrate temperature did not improve the uniformity of the multilayers. Above 20$0^{\circ}C$ of the substrate temperature, the films were almost formed into granular alloys rather than multilayers.

  • The structural, magnetic and magnetoresistance properties of Co/Ag multilayer films prepared by thermal coevaporation were studied. When the Ag layer was $60{\AA}$ thick, the Co layer behaved ferromagnetically even with the thickness of $5{\AA}$. However, when the thickness of Ag layer was $30{\AA}$ and that of Co layer was less than $15{\AA}$ thick, the Co layer became discontinuous and the islands of Co behaved mostly superpararnagnetically. The maximum MR ratio, 6.1% was obtained in the $3000{\AA}\;Ag30{\AA}/Co10{\AA}$ Ag30 A ICo 10 A discontinuous multilayer. Agglomeration of the Co layer was promoted by annealing and hence MR ratio increased when the thickness of Ag layer was thinner than $15{\AA}$. The SiO underlayer enhanced the MR ratio in the $1000{\AA}$ thick multilayer via the layer structure improvement.
