In this study, the behavior of shallow 2-Arch tunnel due to excavation under horizontal discontinuity plane was verified experimentally. The model tests were carried out by varying the overburden height and the location of the discontinuity plane. The model tests followed exactly the real 2-Arch tunnel construction stages. As a result, it is discovered that stress-transfer mechanism and loosening area around the 2-Arch tunnel depends on the overburden heights and the location of the discontinuity plane. And central pillar load is also dependent on overburden height, location of discontinuity plane and construction stages.

In this study, the influence of the presence of discontinuity planes on the load transfer mechanism and the pattern of loosening zone was studied based on the laboratory test. The trap-door and the reaction plates are installed as the bottom plane of the model box. The vertical discontinuity plane is installed in the dry sand. Various overburden heights and locations of discontinuity planes are applied as major factors in this study. The results show that at higher overburden heights over about 1.5 times the excavation width, the ratio of the transferred stress to the insitu stress converges to a certain value even if the overburden height increases further. The results also show that the discontinuity plane gives relatively larger influence on the load transfer mechanism, that produces the unsymmetrical load concentration, when the discontinuity plane locates within the tunnel width. When the discontinuity plane locates outside the tunnel width, the unsymmetrical load concentration is reduced considerably.

In this study, the behavior of a shallow 2-arch tunnel during the excavation in the sandy ground containing vertical discontinuity plane was experimentally studied. Load transfer mechanism in the pillar caused by a 2-arch tunnel excavation was observed. The position of the vertical discontinuity plane was varied. Model tests were carried out in the normal construction sequence of 2-arch tunnel. Test results-showed that the load transfer caused by the 2-arch tunnel excavation was concentrated in the discontinuity plane, and was cut by the discontinuity plane, so no load transfer took place above the discontinuity plane. It was also shown that the effect of adjacent tunnel excavation on the pillar load and the ground deformation was greater when excavating the upper half-face of the main tunnel, more than when excavating the lower half-face.

Underground structures usually consist of rock masses or concretes which can be cracked or have cracks. This study aims to develop an analysis program which can deal with the effect of discontinuous behavior due to those cracks using the block theory. It is assumed that rock masses form blocks along the discontinuity lines, and deformation within the block is relatively small. The behavior of discontinuity plane of the structures is divided into sliding along the discontinuity plane. separation of discontinuity by tensile force, and degradation of asperity angle of discontinuity plane by external force with sliding of rock Basses. These behaviors are implemented using constitutive relation and relevent load-displacement relation defined through normal and shear stiffnesses. Time varying displacements and block velocities are calculated by explicit time stepping algorithm. The effect of rock supports including rockbolts is also considered, and the tending effects which occurs in relatively thin lining is also considered.
The stationary image appears to move after we view a moving stimulus for a long time. The motion aftereffect(MAE) can spread to an adjacent region if there is no contrast discontinuity between two regions. In this study, it is investigated whether a phenomenon of MAE spreading to an adjacent non adapting area is affected by the depth discontinuity defined by binocular disparity. In the first experiment a disparity defined slanted pattern was presented in an unadapted region, and in the second experiment, a disparity defined pattern with a different depth was presented on the fronto-parallel plane. Although MAE duration in the condition with slanted pattern was not different from that in the non-slanted pattern condition, MAE durations in the pattern presented on pronto-parallel plane was vividly reduced, but not completely disappeared. These results suggest that a phenomenon of MAE spreading might be affected by depth discontinuity, and could be occurred after binocular information converges.
The procedures to correct sampling biases for discontinuity data obtained from 1D survey line(borehole or scanline) is addressed. The Probability of intersection between the survey line and a circular discontinuity is considered, and a correction far orientation bias is developed assuming discontinuities as equivalent circular disks. The correction incorporates the effect of the angle between the direction of survey line and each discontinuity plane belonging to the discontinuity cluster, size of each discontinuity and length of the survey line. A procedure is provided to estimate unbiased discontinuity spacing parameters using the discontinuity spacing data based on the measurements carried out on a finite length of the survey line.
Field investigations of the orientations of discontinuity planes inside the borehole for designing the underground rock structures have been depend solely on the borehole image-taking techniques. But, borehole image-taking has to be processed after the completion of drilling operation and also requires the handling of highly expensive apparatus so that practical application is very restricted. In this study Discontinuity Orientation Measurement (DOM) drilling system and discontinuity analysis model RoSA-DOM are developed to acquire the reliable information of rock structure by analyzing the characteristics of joint distribution. DOM drilling system retrieves the rock core on which the reference line of pre-fixed drilling orientation is engraved. Coordinates of three arbitrary points on the joint surface relative to the position of reference line are assessed to determine the orientation of joint plane. The position of joint plane is also allocated by calculating the location of core axis at which joint plane is intersected. Then, the formation of joint set is analyzed by utilizing the clustering algorithm. Total and set spacings are calculated by considering the borehole axis as the scanline. Engineering applicability of in-situ rock mass around the borehole is also estimated by calculating the total and regional RQDs along the borehole axis.
A cut-slope near Guam-Ri Hwado-Eup Namyangju-Si Kyunggi-Do collapsed during a heavy rainfall over 400mm at 28th of August 2000. The cut-slope collapse reportedly developed mainly by block sliding along a set of discontinuities, although slope angle of the cut-slope was 40$^{\circ}$(1:1.2) that agrees with the road construction criteria. This study aims to analyze differences and correlations among several data-collecting methods limited to discontinuity analysis related with cut-slope collapse. This study started with analysing discontinuity surface characteristics, geology of the country rock and orientations of the discontinuities directly related with the collapse. Analysis of aerial photos around the study area provided regional lineament data, and discontinuity plane description and measurements were collected from core logging and Borehole Image Processing System (BIPS). Spearmans correlation ranking coefficient method was used to get correlation of discontinuity planes according to analysis methods. The result suggests that the correlation coefficient is ${\gamma}_s$ = 0.91 Plus, stability analysis of discontinuity plane orientation data using equal-area stereonet revealed that the study area is unstable to planar failure. This study suggests that the cut-slope angles currently applied should be shallower and that significant attention is required to orientation distribution of discontinuities existed in cut-slopes studies.
The quantitative analyses and the mechanical interpretation of discontinuity planes are the most important factor for the study of strength and deformation properties of rock masses containing discontinuity planes. However, the relationship between the factors investigated in the field and the actual mechanical properties of discontinuity planes is not fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of density, length, and spacing of joints on elastic modulus of rock masses as these values vary. A new parameter which has a direct relation with the elastic modulus of discontinuity planes is also preposed in this study. The combination of finite element methods and homogenization methods has been used for the numerical analyses of a uintcell with discontinuity planes, which is generated using random-number generation methods. The elastic modulus of the discontinuity plane is found from the numerical analyses. The final results propose not only the relation between the investigation parameters of discontinuity planes and the elastic modulus of rock masses but also a new parameter, an effect area ratio having a linear relation with the elastic modulus of rock masses.
Shear strength of the discontinuity on which the pre-failure of rock slope was occurred during surface excavation was measured through the direct shear test using core samples obtained in-situ. Internal friction angle was increased as the roughness of discontinuity surface(JRC) was increased. Results of the tilt test using core samples of higher JRC also showed very similar trend as those of the direct shear test. When the samples replicated from natural cores were used int he tilt test, results of friction angles showed almost perfect continuation of the residual friction angles from the direct shear test. However, when the gouge material existed in the discontinuity the internal friction angle strongly depended upon the rate of filling thickness to the height of asperity irrespective of the JRC. Based on the results of both direct shear test and tilt test internal friction angle and cohesion of discontinuity, which reflect the in-situ conditions fo pre-sliding failure and also can be used for the optimum design of support system, were assessed. Two kinds of support measures which were expected to increase the stability of rock slope were considered; lowering of slope face angle and installation of rock cable. But, it was found that the first method might lead to more unstable conditions of rock slope when the cohesion of discontinuity plane was negligibly low and in that case the support systems of any kind which could exert actual resisting force were needed to ensure the permanent stability of rock slope.
