  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the current status of managing educational programs for tobacco use prevention at middle and high schools located in Busan. Methods: Using a survey method with a 29-item self-administration questionnaire, the data were collected from January 10 through February 18, 2005, from school nurses as well as teachers major in healthcare of 227 participant schools. Results: A strategic plan for school-based educational programs of tobacco use prevention was mainly developed by a school nurse at middle school and a teacher in charge of school discipline at high school. The educational programs for tobacco use prevention were implemented for approximately 40% of schools in Busan with the budget ranged from 110,000 won to 200,000 won a year. Eighty five percepts of the schools had anti-tobacco regulations and guidelines in place. Twenty two percents of the middle and high schools collected the data regarding adolescents' smoking status periodically. Over 70% of schools provided tobacco use prevention education programs as a part of regular semester curriculum. Conclusions: For making the management of educational programs for tobacco use prevention effective and consistent with government's anti-smoking policy, schools need (a) development of tobacco management guideline and regulations with participation of teachers, students, and parents, (b) clear job and role descriptions for personnel to plan and implement anti-tobacco programs, (c) compilation of the budget enough to implement the programs, (d) periodically assessment of adolescents' smoking status, and evaluation of the programs to monitor whether those are effective for adolescents' health promotion; and (e) to make an effort to less range of quality in educational programs for tobacco use.

  • All learners have to improve problem-solving abilities based on the principles of Computer Science and Computational Concepts as well as enhance their information technology fluency for living in the 21st century. However, there are no clear answers for fundamental questions such as 'What is Computer Science?' or 'What is the nature of Informatics education?'. Informatics education is threatened by the terminological confusion and misleading external images of Computer Science or Informatics education. Therefore, in this study, we closely reviewed perspectives on the nature and necessity of Informatics education and suggested a perspective to improve Informatics education. First, we examined how the definition of Computer Science has changed and pointed out that the Computer Science curriculum has operated differently from country to country because of the different viewpoints about Computer Science. Moreover, we presented evidence to assert that Informatics education should be considered as an independent science subject that is for all students. Finally, we suggested essential elements to insist that Informatics is a discipline to improve computational thinking. Essential elements consisted of 'Representations', 'Processes', 'Machines', 'Relationships' and 'Construction'. We suggested that the concept of Informatics should be extended based on these five elements.

  • This study is to make suggestion for developing textbook systematically by analyzing biological contents and organization in science textbooks which are important instructional media to accomplish objectives of the 6th middle school science curriculum. The inclusiveness degree of the 6th science educational objectives reflected in the textbooks was analyzed by Klopfer's and the Korean Educational Department's objectives taxonomy. And the biological contents and the organization of the science textbook were analyzed by learner, subject matter, and society dimensions which are selecting criteria for curriculum objectives suggested in Tyler's curriculum model. The analyzed results are as follows: 1. The inclusiveness degree of the educational objectives was very low. 2. Regarding the dimension of learner, the concepts of formal operational cognitive level were much increased as grade becomes higher. And the degree of learner's interests reflected on the learning topics and domains was very low. 3. Regarding the dimension of subject matter, the concept-centered learning was increased, in relation to inquiry learning as grade becomes higher. The analyzed results of inquiry subskills showed that observation, classification, and recording skills in 1st grade, observation and operation skills in 2nd grade, and interpreting data skills in 3rd grade were centered. As the problems and processes were presented, so most of inquiry activities had low openness scale. The learning contexts were organized into discipline-centered in relation to real life. 4. Regarding society dimension, the learning topics of environments and health were much presented. but those of biotechnology and career were presented scarcely. And most learning topics related society dimension were organized in textbooks of the 2nd and 3rd grade. These suggested that to accomplish curriculum objectives effectively. the inclusiveness degree of educational objectives is to increase and, the contents and organization of textbook were constructed harmoniously in aspects of learner, subject matter and society dimensions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' needs for home economics elective courses in line with the introduction of the high school credit system and the development of the next home economics curriculum. To this end, 1,689 high school students across the country were analyzed for needs of home economics elective courses (eighteen elective courses and six sub-disciplines of home economics) and differences in the needs of home economics elective courses based on gender, grade levels, and completion of home economics science subject. The research results were as follows. Among the six sub-disciplines, the preference for 'dietary life' was the highest, and in terms of teaching types, experiment and practice class had significantly higher preference in 'dietary life' than other sub-disciplines. Girls showed higher preferences for home economics elective courses than boys, and the third graders showed significantly higher preferences only for the 'dietary life' sub-discipline than the first graders. High school students who are learning or have learned the home economics science subject showed higher preference for home economics elective courses in all the sub-disciplines than those who have not learned it. Based on the results of this study, it is suggested for the national curriculum development that further researches should be actively carried out to develop home economics career elective subjects.

  • This study's goal is to consider deeper about the Context-Communication Study on candidates of future petty officers in community colleagues, therefore the study uses theoretical approaches of the communications based on literature research. The petty officer majors in community colleagues need to set a curriculum to achieve the goal of the Context-Communication Study. The class, which is a continuous class from freshman to sophomore year, needs to be designed as a combination class of command/discipline major classes and communication studies. This study shows the detail ways of the Context-Communication Study to bring student's interests by using simulation studies with writing papers, training interviews, and presentations which all will be checked by their instructors. Instructors will get students to the point that they have upscale communication abilities and language abilities. Finally, this study shows limitations of the Context-Communication Study and suggests the further direction of research.

  • This study was to compare the contents and practical problems addressed, the process of teaching-learning method, and evaluation method of Korean Home Economics curriculum and of the Oregon and Ohio's Practical Problem Focused Family & Consumer Sciences Curricula. The results are as follows. First, contents of Korean curriculum are organized by major sub-concepts of Home Economics academic discipline whereas curricular of both Oregon and Ohio states are organized by practical problems. Oregon uses the practical problems which integrate multi-subjects and Ohio uses ones which are good for the contents of the module by integrating concerns or interests which are lower or detailed level (related interests). Since it differentiates interest and module and used them based on the basic concept of Family and Consumer Science, Ohio's approach could be easier for Korean teachers and students to adopt. Second, the teaching-learning process in Korean home economics classroom is mostly teacher-centered which hinders students to develop higher order thinking skills. It is recommended to use student-centered learning activities. State of Oregon and Ohio's teaching-learning process brings up the ability of problem-solving by letting students clearly analyze practical problems proposed, solve problems by themselves through group discussions and various activities, and apply what they learn to other problems. Third, Korean evaluation system is heavily rely on summative evaluation such as written tests. It is highly recommended to facilitate various performance assessment tools. Since state of Oregon and Ohio both use practical problems, they evaluate students mainly based on their activity rather than written tests. The tools for evaluation include project documents, reports of learning activity, self-evaluation, evaluation of discussion activity, peer evaluation in a group for each students for their performance, assessment about module, and written tests as well.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand a variety of intervention studies to prevent smoking by adolescents in U.S. and find out implications for Korea. Methods: This study reviewed articles found in the internet and analysed the data of US DHHS and CDC. Results: The School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) is a national survey periodically conducted to assess school health policies and programs of U.S. The main components of SHPPS are health education and physical education, health services, mental health and social services, school policies, and school environments. The CDC guidelines for school health programs to prevent tobacco use and addiction are composed of policy, instruction, curriculum, training, family involvement, tobacco-use cessation efforts, and evaluation. School-based interventions to prevent smoking can be classified into the categories of information-giving curricula, social competence curricula, social influence approaches, combined methods draw on social competence and social influence approaches and multi-modal programmes and Youth Empowerment study. The key programs for adolescent smoking prevention are ALERT Project, HSPP, TNT Project, MPP, NC YES. Conclusions: As smoking is often the first step of unhealthy behaviour such as alcohol drinking, illegal drugs, and violence, smoking prevention programmes for adolescents in U.S. have been comprehensive school-based health programs. In smoking prevention programs for adolescents, CDC plays a critical role by supporting survey, research, policy, and funds. The effectiveness of the programs was high when it was based on school and involved parents, community, and mass media. As the effect of each programme is not expected to last for a long time, consistent repetition of these interventions is essential. Current smoking prevention programs for adolescents are exploring the empowerment approach focused on the active involvement of participants rather than traditional approaches using order and discipline.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine critical assessments and core competencies, and to determine the competence and discipline of self-assessment. We surveyed 511 students who graduated from 12 universities. Self-efficacy 24 items were measured on a 5-point scale, 8 core competencies and 52 detailed competencies were self - assessed from 0 to a maximum of 10 points. The higher the score, the higher the self - evaluation competency level. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0 Ver., And a statistical significance level of 0.05 was considered. The self - evaluation competency level was the highest at 6.7 points in the clinical dentistry area, and the lowest at the evidence - based decision area of 5.7 points. Self-regulation was found to be positively related to the self-evaluation core competence level among self-efficacy sub-factors. As the students' self-efficacy affects subjective academic achievement and self-evaluation, it is necessary to develop and apply relevant programs to enhance critical thinking in curriculum, apply problem-based learning method, improve self-efficacy and leadership, It should be possible to cultivate.

  • This study compared the types and creativity level of scientific humors made by general and scientifically-gifted elementary students and their perceptions for educational benefits of making scientific humor. To do this, fifth graders (n=42) at an elementary school and fifth graders (n=38) at a gifted science education institutes in Seoul were selected. Scientific humors made by the students were analyzed and compared according to their types and creativity levels in scientific humor. The students' perceptions for educational benefits of making scientific humor were also analyzed and compared through a questionnaire. Analysis of the results reveal that there were some differences in the incidence rates in 'form' aspects (e.g., generative and descriptive forms) and 'content' aspects (e.g., inclusion of curriculum, scientific discipline, type in use of scientific knowledge, and nature of the situation) between the scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. The scientifically-gifted students also made more fluent, flexible, and original, but similarly useful scientific humors than the general students. Most of general and scientifically-gifted elementary students perceived positively the educational benefits of making scientific humor based on various cognitive and affective aspects.
