In this study, the pressure loss of a fire hose reel hydrant was examined and the effects of each factor on the pressure loss were analyzed. First, in the pressure loss experiment according to the length of the reel hose, the pressure loss increased with increasing length of the reel hose; it was approximately 38.86% based on a 25 m hose. Second, the pressure loss of the reel hose per unit length was estimated to be $.13{\sim}.15kgf/cm^2$. Third, in the pressure loss experiment according to the change in the flow rate, the result was similar to the relation, flow rate - pressure loss (${\Delta}P{\sim}Q^2$), in the piping flow. These results provide basic data on the evaluation of fire pump pressure and the performance-based fire-protecting design of fire hose reel hydrants used in buildings.
Climate change has been influenced on extreme precipitation events, which are major driving causes of flooding. Especially, most of extreme water-related disasters in Korea occur from floods induced by extreme precipitation events. However, future climate change scenarios simulated with Global Circulation Models (GCMs) or Reigonal Climate Models (RCMs) are limited to the application on medium and small size rivers and urban watersheds due to coarse spatial and temporal resolutions. Therefore, the current study introduces the state-of-the-art approaches and procedures of statistical downscaling techniques to resolve this limitation It is expected that the temporally downscaled data allows frequency analysis for the future precipitation and estimating the design precipitation for disaster prevention.
This study describes the results of laboratory model test on settlement of soil contaminated with heavy metals, in order to evaluate the applicability of VMS to the measurement of gound settlements generated during the purification of contaminated soil. The measurement results for settlement of contaminated soil were compared using a 3D-Visual Monitoring System (VMS) based on digital photogrammetry and a total station. The test result showed that the settlement of the soil contaminated with heavy metals occurred a lot in the experimental condition in which the hydrophilic filter was applied. The minimum and maximum error ranges of VMS were calculated as ±0.36mm and ±0.87mm, respectively, and the error of VMS was satisfied in all experimental conditions. The average error rate of VMS was lower in the hydrophilic filter condition than in the hydrophobic filter condition. Therefore, it was evaluated that VMS can be applied to measure the settlement of contaminated soil.

As the weather changes become frequent, weather disasters are increasing, causing more damage to plastic greenhouses. Among the damage caused by various disasters, damage by snow to the greenhouse takes a relatively long time, so if an alarm system is properly prepared, the damage can be reduced. Existing greenhouse design standards and snow warning systems are based on snow depth. However, even in the same depth, the load on the greenhouse varies depending on meteorological characteristics and snow density. Therefore, this study aims to secure the structural safety of greenhouses by developing sensors that can directly measure snow loads, and analysing the warning criteria for load using a stochastic model. Markov chain was applied to estimate the failure probability of various types of greenhouses in various regions, which let users actively cope with heavy snowfall by selecting an appropriate time to respond. Although it was hard to predict the precise snow depth or amounts, it could successfully assess the risk of structures by directly detecting the snow load using the developed sensor.

This research presents a methodology to define and apply appropriate index that can measure the risk of regional flood damage. Pressure-State-Response structure has been used to develop the Flood Risk Index(FRI), which allows for a comparative analysis of flood risk assessment between different sub-basins. FRI is a rational assessment method available to improve disaster preparedness and the prevention of losses. The pressure and state index for flood at 117 sub-basins from the year 1980s until the t 10s showed proportional relations, but state index did not decrease even though response index increased. This shows that pressures for flood damage relatively exceed countermeasure for flood. Thus this means we need to strengthen design criteria for flood countermeasure in the future. The FRI is gradually going down in consequence of continuous flood control projects. Flood risk of Han River and Nakdong River area is relatively lower than that of Geum, Seumjin, and Youngsan River area.

Recently, RFID/USN technology has been applied in various fields such as logistics, environment, education, home network, disaster prevention, military, and medical care, but despite the remarkable development of RFID/USN technology, it is difficult to apply it to marine industry due to the characteristics of poor marine environment. Therefore, satellites are mainly used in the marine sector, and existing communication networks are used in the coast, so measures for forming a shelf-only short-range network in the ocean are being considered. In this paper, we consider the use of drones as mobile base stations of USN as a base station role using USN in existing PS-LTE and LTE networks.Since autonomous navigation vessels are aiming for the intelligent system, the number of crew and labor force should be reduced and the function of autonomous network formation in the form of more stable and intelligent ICT convergence technology should be strengthened.

High-quality precipitation data are crucial for various industries, including disaster prevention. In South Korea, long-term high-quality data are collected through numerous ground observation stations. However, data between these stations are reprocessed into a grid format using interpolation methods, which may not perfectly match actual precipitation. A prime example of real-time observational grid data globally is the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM IMERG) from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), while in South Korea, ground radar data are more commonly used. GPM and ground radar data exhibit distinct differences due to their respective processing methods. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of GPM and Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator(CAPPI),representative real-time grid data, by comparing them with ground-observed precipitation data. The study period spans from 2021 to 2022, focusing on hourly data from Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS) sites in South Korea. The GPM data tend to underestimate precipitation compared to ASOS data, while CAPPI shows errors in estimating low precipitation amounts. Through this comparative analysis, the study anticipates identifying key considerations for utilizing these data in various applied fields, such as recalculating design rainfall, thereby aiding researchers in improving prediction accuracy by using appropriate data.
The horizontal response spectra using the observed ground motions from 15 Fukuoka earthquake series, including main earthquake (2005/03/20; Mw=6.5), were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Regulatory Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). 178 horizontal ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that response spectrum have strong dependency on epicentral distance. The results also showed that the horizontal response spectra revealed higher values for frequency bands at two frequency bands (about 8 - 10 and 16- 20 Hz) than Regulatory Guide 1.60. The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Building Design Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that thehorizontal response spectra revealed higher values for almost all period bands than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (500 yrs; Return Period; Seismic province 1; SE soil conditions). Through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the diversity of the observed ground motions should be considered more significantly to improve the certainty of response spectrum.
This hydraulic study analyzed the scour effect at fixed downstream weirs based on the changes in the upstream bed slope. The study was performed using six different bed slopes, that is, 0%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 7%, and 10% at 0.117 ㎥/s in all cases. The scour depth, scour length, and scour volume were measured using a broadband laser scanner to quantitatively analyze the scour at the downstream weir. This study also examined the adequacy of the designed apron length by comparatively analyzing the results of the scour experiments and the apron length calculated using conventional design standard formulas. The analysis of the local scour effect at the downstream weir showed that scour length and scour depth increased as the bed slope became steeper. A comparison between the results of the scour experiment and that of the conventional design formulas showed that both formulas of the National Construction Research Institute and the Bligh were distributed within the allowable values when there was no upstream bed slope. However, as the bed slope upstream of the weir gradually increased, the scour lengths of the apron deviated slightly from the values obtained from the conventional design formulas.
Soil erosion is often extreme in Korea due to high rainfall intensities and steep slopes, and climate change has also increased the risk of erosion. Despite its significane, erosion-induced soil organic carbon (SOC) emission and water resource loss are not well understood, along with the lack of an integrated surface soil erosion protection policy. Therefore, to design adequate protection policies, land users, scientists, engineers and decision makers need proper information about surface soil and watershed properties related to greenhouse gas emission potential and water conservation capability, respectively. Assuming the total soil erosion of $346Tg\;yr^{-1}$, soil organic matter (SOM) content of 2% (58% of SOM is SOC), and mineralization rate of 20% of the displaced carbon, erosion-induced carbon emission could reach $800Gg\;C\;yr^{-1}$. Also the available water capacity of the soil was estimated to be 15.8 billion tons, which was 14 times higher than the yearly water supply demand in Seoul, Korea. Therefore, in order to prevent of soil erosion, this study proposes a three-stage plan for surface soil erosion prevention: 1) classification of soil erosion risk and scoring of surface soil quality, 2) selection of priority areas for conservation and best management practices (BMP), and 3) application of BMP and post management.
