The purpose of this study is to find out implications which can be useful for enhancement of user participation in Korean disability services from UK community care experience. In Korea, until recently dominant issue on social services always has been the shortage of service provision. But during the recent 20 years, we experienced great expansion in quantity, as though it may be not yet enough. And more recently, disabled people and organizations began to actively argue for appropriate service in quantity and quality. Now, Korean disability policy and practice are confronted to the difficult and embarrassing task how to meet the need of disabled people with limited resources, and how to response to the disabled people's voice arguing on independence and choice. This task would require somewhat deliberate reform which might be quite different from previous one. UK's experience of implementation and development of community care system would give meaningful implications to Korean disability service policy and practice related to user participation. The results of the review on user participation issues in the UK community care give several implications to Korean disability services. Above all, consumerist approach which is the key strategy adopted by UK community care change is not appropriate for Korean disability service because of largely different service environment. The second implication is about decentralization. To enable decentralization of social service leads to enhancement of user involvement avoiding a lowering of service quality, prerequisite conditions should be secured. A third is securing and making declaration on the disabled person's right to assessment and constructing public service system operated by case management process. Fourth, formalized complaints procedure should be established. Fifth, professional education which enables professionals to encourage participation of disabled people should be developed, and the role of disability movement leading disabled users to participate on their services also should be highlighted.
This study aims to investigate the changes of their recognition and childcare practices before and after the training for disability awareness targeting class teachers in inclusive childcare setting. Subjects of this study were 9 teachers and the data was collected from 3 focus group (3 persons per group) and personal interviews in case of study needs. The results of this study are as follows: childcare teachers appealed ignorance and fear of children with disabilities before learning to improve their disability awareness, and have learned from the non-prejudiced attitudes of non-disabled children. The need for understanding and knowledge of children with disabilities was high, and they voluntarily and actively participated in the education for the improvement of disability awareness. Since participating in education, teachers have shown changes in perceptions of children with disabilities and changes in the way they practice childcare for disabled children. As regards cognition, teachers have become more interested in and understanding of children with disabilities and have tried to treat them equally with non-disabled children. Regarding the practice of childcare, they practiced the integrated program together with the non-disabled child and the disabled child through cooperative partnership. They also provided the disability awareness education to the non-disabled children and provided the partial integrated childcare program flexibly in one class according to the situation. The results of this study were analyzed and discussed about the general childcare teachers' experience related to the education for improving disability recognition and caring at childcare setting.
This study aimed to analyze the trajectories of cognitive function and functional disability, and to identify the impacts of socio-demographic factors on the two variables. Based on the assumption that there are differences according to the progress of cognitive impairment, it focused on examining the differences in trajectories of cognitive function and functional disability between two groups: dementia conversion group and dementia non-conversion group among cognitively normal older adults. This study was conducted based on the data from a 3-wave panel study of a sample of 966 Yeoncheon elderly cohort aged 65 and over between 1997 and 2003. Latent growth curve model and multi-group structural equation modeling were used to examine the hypothesis. Results revealed that dementia conversion group exhibited faster rate of cognitive decline as well as lower initial cognitive level. Difference between two groups was not significant in the initial level of functional disability, yet dementia conversion group showed greater degree of deterioration in the functional disability over time than dementia non-conversion group did. In terms of the influence of socio-demographic factors on cognitive function and functional disability, the cognitive decline was more drastic in the female group, whereas functional decline was more apparent for the male group. The level of education in early life had a strong impact on the cognitive function in later life. Based on these findings, practical implication for high risk groups in cognitive function and functional disability were discussed.
This study aims to identify parents' recognition of school-enterprise convergence by type of disability. To this end, it analyzes 150 parents with children attending special school in region D, K, and S. As a result, first, parents preferred their children's vocational ability development, employment rate improvement, and manufacturing and supplying method of goods requested by industrial bodies in the community the most and hoped to complete educational courses for the professional education of a job that they wanted to learn and learn the basic ability education for the job. Second, they preferred participation in practical hours and after-school activities and hoped all 2nd and 3rd high school graders to be selected if they wanted, and as compensation for them, wanted appropriate adjustment of class hours or tasks. This suggests that active participation in classes and selection of various types of business seem to be necessary.
The purpose of this study is to examine factors on wage of the Disabled. This study attempts to identify organizational effects on wage of the disabled. Then, this study adopts hierarchical linear model for the study purpose. Data used for this article is the survey on the vocational rehabilitation facilities in Seoul. The results are as follows. First, wage of the disabled is different from organizations as well as individuals. So, there are necessities in the consideration of organizational effects and the application of hierarchical linear model. Second, effects on wage of the disabilities controlling individual factors such as age, educational level, period using the facilities, sex, whether or not beneficiary, type of disability are different from organization. Finally, there are interaction effects of type of disability and organizational character variables. The implications of these findings are as follows. First, more political concerns should be given on the management of vocational rehabilitation facilities. Second, it is needed to concern about vocational rehabilitation of the mentally disabled.
Background: The purpose of this study was to identify factors inhibiting access of people with disability to health check-ups as well as identify pertinent solutions for improvement. Methods: Twenty-three people with disability older than the age of 19 who took respective health check-ups within the last 3 years were selected as participants. For the data collection, the 1:1 intensive interview was used. The data were analyzed by the grounded theory by Corbin and Strauss. Results: The results comprised nine categories, 23 subcategories, and 179 concepts. The central phenomenon was 'failure to obtain check-ups.' Causal conditions were observed as a 'lack of communication method,' 'physical difficulties,' and 'staff unfamiliar with people with disability,' Interventional conditions comprised 'physical accessibility,' 'staffs' competency,' and 'assistant manpower.' The active strategy was included 'to investigate the professional medical institution,' 'to find the medical institution of convenient traffic accessibility,' 'to overcome communication difficulties through equipment,' and 'to overcome linguistic barriers through sufficient communication.' Whereas, 'utilization of ancillary equipment,' 'the education of staffs on people with disability,' 'universal design manual,' and 'customized check-ups' were included in the passive strategy. Such processes arose in the contextual conditions of 'lack of expectations for daily lives' and 'lack of government support.' As a consequence, the subjects participated experienced the 'disadvantages,' 'discrimination,' and 'reduced reliability of the health check-ups.' Conclusion: The subjects who participated in this study emphasized 'staffs familiar with people with disability' and 'systems customized for people with disability' are mandatory to secure complete health check-ups for people with disability.
This study examines the relationship of disability acceptance, interpersonal skill with job satisfaction to improve the job satifaction of the disabled in wage work. The study also examines the moderated effect of employment type and the mediated effect of interpersonal skill. the research used data from the 2nd wave of the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled(PSED) in Years 1-4(2016-2019), AMOS 22 was to analyze the paths between variables. The result of the study are as follows. First, The job satisfaction of the disabled in wage work differed significantly in educational background, age group, and working period. But, there was no significant difference in gender. Second, disability acceptance has been shown to have a significant positive effect on job satisfaction. Third, interpersonal skill have been shown to have a positive mediated effect in the relation between disability acceptance and job satisfaction. Fourth, the relation between disability acceptance and job satisfaction revealed that employment type have a negative significant moderating effect. Based on the result, Welfare practices for disability acceptance, interpersonal skill, and employment were proposed in order to promote job satisfaction for the disabled.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing the acceptance of disabilities among adults with acquired disabilities based on ecological theory, utilizing raw data from the 4th Disability and Life Dynamics Panel in 2021. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that individual factors such as 'gender,' 'type of disability,' 'severity of disability,' 'marital status,' 'education,' 'employment status,' 'depression,' 'self-esteem,' and 'overall health in the past six months,' interpersonal factors like 'emotional support and assistance,' and organizational and environmental factors including the 'level of difficulty in using disability-related services' and 'overall satisfaction with disability welfare services' were found to impact the acceptance of disabilities among adults with acquired disabilities. Based on these research findings, it is suggested that efforts in the community to enhance the acceptance of disabilities among adults with acquired disabilities should go beyond individual dimensions, increasing opportunities for social interactions and fostering a disability-friendly environment.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of stretching and strengthening exercises on the pain, pelvic tilt (PT), functional disability, and balance of patients with chronic lower back pain (CLBP). Methods: A total of 42 patients with CLBP were randomly divided randomly into either experimental group I (EG I, n=21), who received stretching exercise, or experimental group II (EG II, n=21), who received strengthening exercise. Both interventions were applied three times a week for eight weeks. Assessments were made with a visual analogue scale (VAS), PT, Oswestry disability index (ODI), and Berg's balance scale (BBS) before and after the eight weeks intervention period. A paired t-test was conducted to compare the within-group changes before and after the intervention. An independent t-test was used compare the between-group difference. The statistical significance level was set to ${\alpha}=0.05$ for all variables. Results: The EG I and II showed significant within-group changes in the VAS, PT, ODI, and BBS (p<0.05). The changes in VAS, PT, ODI, and BBS were similar regardless of the exercise form. Conclusion: In this study, the application of stretching and strengthening exercise for subjects who complain of CLBP was effective in changing the level of pain, PT, functional disability, and balance.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate undergraduate student's attitudes toward person with disabilities. Design: Questionnaire-based study Methods: This study conducted a survey of 350 undergraduate students attending two universities in cities B and C from March to April 2024. Out of a total of 350 questionnaires, 334 questionnaires were analyzed after excluding 16 questionnaires due to incomplete content. The questionnaire was revised and enhanced by the researchers and was supplemented through revision and verification by another occupational therapist as professor. Results: As a result of the study, significant differences in undergraduate students' positive attitudes toward the disabled were found to be gender and taking disability-related curriculum, while significant differences in negative attitudes were found to be gender, presence of a disabled person in the family, and religion. Gender, taking disability-related curriculum, and religion showed significant differences in neutral attitude, and in all areas, gender, taking disability-related subjects, having a family member with a disability, and religion showed significant differences. Conclusions: Factors that influence undergraduate students' attitudes toward person with disabilities include gender, whether or not they take disability-related curriculum, whether a family member is disabled, and religion. As our society's policies and perceptions of person with disabilities are rapidly changing, in order to improve our society's attitude and awareness of disabilities, we need to provide students with a correct understanding of disabilities and develop positive attitudes through positive experiences about disabilities. Educational programs should be provided.
