Numerical simulation of tensile failure of concrete using Particle Flow Code (PFC)

  • This paper considers the tensile strength of concrete samples in direct, CTT, modified tension, splitting and ring tests using both of the experimental tests and numerical simulation (particle flow code 2D). It determined that which one of indirect tensile strength is close to direct tensile strength. Initially calibration of PFC was undertaken with respect to the data obtained from Brazilian laboratory tests to ensure the conformity of the simulated numerical models response. Furthermore, validation of the simulated models in four introduced tests was also cross checked with the results from experimental tests. By using numerical testing, the failure process was visually observed and failure patterns were watched to be reasonable in accordance with experimental results. Discrete element simulations demonstrated that the macro fractures in models are caused by microscopic tensile breakages on large numbers of bonded discs. Tensile strength of concrete in direct test was less than other tests results. Tensile strength resulted from modified tension test was close to direct test results. So modified tension test can be a proper test for determination of tensile strength of concrete in absence of direct test. Other advantages shown by modified tension tests are: (1) sample preparation is easy and (2) the use of a simple conventional compression press controlled by displacement compared with complicate device in other tests.

저함수비 모래의 인장강도에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Investigations on Tensile Strength of Sand at Low Moisture Contents)

  • 새롭게 개발된 직접인장시험기와 시험방법을 이용하여 습윤모래의 인장강도를 측정하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 습윤모래에 인장강도가 존재함을 분명하게 확인 할 수 있고, 저함수비 모래의 인장강도를 간단하고 정확하게 측정 가능함을 알 수 있다. 일반적으로 알고 있는 바와 달리 습윤모래의 인장강도는 영(zero)이 아님을 알 수 있다. 함수비가 (0.5 < w < 4.0%) 증가함에 따라 인장강도는 증가하는 것으로 나타났으며, 상대밀도가 (30 < $D_r$ < 70%) 증가함에 따라 인장강도가 증가하는 경향은 더욱 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 지반공학적 문제에서 습윤모래의 인장강도에 대한 영향을 조사하기 위하여 사질토지반에 설치된 원형의 강성후팅에 대한 수치해석을 실시하였다. 해석결과 미소한 인장강도를 고려하더라도 지반의 안정성이 크게 증가함을 확인할 수 있다.

미세 와이어의 전단에 관한 연구 (A study on the shearing of the straightened micro-wire)

  • In this study, we have developed a novel wire straightener which uses the direct heating method (DHM) fer straightening the micro wire. Also, we have developed a shearing device for cutting the micro wire. In order to avoid the surface oxidization, we supplied the inert gas(Ar) during the heating process and examined the effect of gas flow rate. The effects of the tension and the current applied to the tungsten micro wires were also thoroughly studied. From various experiments and analyses, we could obtain fine straightness $(\approx1\;{\mu}m/1000\;{\mu}m)$ and roundness $(<{\pm}2{\mu}m\;/100{\mu}m)$ when the tension is $500\~~600gf$ and the current is about 1.5A. for burrfree cutting, counter-punch method which two cutters moving contrary was used. The cutting blade has various U-groove angle where upper $10^{\circ}$, $mid:25^{\circ}$, lower $0^{\circ}$. After the shearing process, we confirmed the shearing section.

  • Recently, increasing demand on not only lighter but also extremely mobile battery make micro fuel cell device very attractive alternative. By reducing the size of fuel cell, surface tension becomes dominant factor with minor gravitational effect. Therefore, it is very difficult to detach the $CO_2$ bubble generating on a cathode side in ${\mu}DMFC$ (micro direct methanol fuel cell). The degassing of a $CO_2$ bubble has drawn quite attention especially for ${\mu}DMFC$ due to its considerable effect on overall machine performance. Our attention has been paid to the dynamic behavior of immiscible bubble attached to the one side of the wall on 2D rectangular channel subject to external shear flow. We use Level Contour Reconstruction Method (LCRM) which is simplified version of front tracking method to track the bubble interface motion. Effects of Reynolds number, Weber number, advancing/receding contact angle and property ratio on bubble detachment characteristic has been numerically identified.

진동을 이용한 철도차량의 무게중심과 관성모멘트 현장 측정 (Field Measurement of the Center of Gravity and the Moment of Inertia of Railway Vehicles Using Vibration)

  • The center of gravity and the moment of inertia of railway vehicles are important parameters for running safety and stability in railway vehicle design. However, the exact measurement of those is difficult in manufacturing field. The weight measurement of a railway vehicle beneath the wheel using a weight scale is off by a large amount. This paper suggests a measurement method for the center of gravity and the moment of inertia of railway vehicles using vibration. For the measurement a railway vehicle is suspended using four wires. Direct measurement of the tension of the wires and the period of swinging motion of the suspended railway vehicle with calculations give the exact location of the center of gravity and the moment of inertia in x, y, and z directions, respectively. This implementation was demonstrated using an experimental device and verified numerically.

  • The present investigation aims at visualizing the crack tip stress field using a mechanoluminescence material. The well known compound $SrAl_2O_4$:$Eu^{2+}$ was adopted as a mechanolurninescence material. Two more trivalent rare-earth elements such as Dy and Nd were taken into consideration as codopants to provide the appropriate trap levels. Samples of a variety of compositions were prepared by varing $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$, and $Nd^{3+}$ doping contents, for which the combinatorial chemistry method was used. In order to search for the optimum composition for the highest mechanoluminescence, the luminescence induced by a compressive device including a CCD camera. In parallel, a compact tension specimen was prepared by mixing the luminescence powders of optimum composition and epoxy resin. Crack initiation from the mechanically machined sharp note tip and its growth during loading were found to be associated with the extent of light emission from $SrAl_2O_4$.

초소형 전기 장치에 의한 전기 자극이 치아 이동과 주위 조직 개조에 미치는 효과에 관한 연구 (A study on the effects of Electrical stimulation by the miniature Electric device on the tooth movement and tissue remodeling)

  • 낮은 강도의 전류는 골세포의 활성화 대사를 증가시키는 것으로 알려져 왔다. 이 연구는 초소형 전기 장치에 의한 전기 자극이 교정적 치아 이동에 미치는 영향을 규명하기 위하여, 체중 3kg내외의 고양이 6마리를 대상으로 가철성 교정장치와 NiTi coil spring(75gm)을 사용하여 상악 견치를 이동시켰다. 실험군측 견치에는 교정력과 간헐적인 $20{\mu}A$의 전기 자극을 가하였고, 대조군측에는 같은 크기의 교정력만을 가한 후 4주 동안의 치아 이동량을 측정하여 비교하였으며, 치아를 중심으로 조직을 절취하여 탈회하고 조직 처리 후 광학 현미경으로 치주조직의 변화를 비교하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 28일간의 실험 기간 동안 실험측의 치아 이동량은 대조군에 비하여 현저히 증가하여, 4주후에 실험측의 치아는 대조군에 비하여 37% 증가된 이동량을 기록하였다. 2. 전기 자극을 받은 치아의 치근 견인측에서 대조군에 비하여 조직학적으로 증가된 골형성 양상이 관찰되었다. 3. 28일간의 전기 자극과 교정력으로 실험측 치아의 압박측에서 대조군에 비하여 증가된 골 흡수 양상이 관찰되었다. 4. 실험군 견치 치근 주위 조직에서는 전반적으로 더 많은 수의 조골 및 파골 세포들과 모세 혈관, 골양 조직들이 관찰됨으로써 증가된 조직 세포 활성을 반영하였다. 5. 1일 5시간 동안의 간헐적 전류 자극은 치아 이동량을 증가시키고 조직 개조를 활성화시키는 효과가 있었다. 이상의 결과는 외부에서 가한 낮은 강도의 간헐적 전기 자극으로 교정적 치아 이동량이 많아지고 치주 조직의 개조 활성이 증가됨을 보이므로 초소형 전기 장치에 의한 자극은 치아 이동과 주위 조직 개조를 촉진시킬 가능성이 있을 것으로 평가되었다.

  • The Musculoskeletal Disease has been ignored or turned away due to the difficulty of diagnosis and the vagueness of judgement up to now. Contrary to other diseases, there were many cases where the character of the Musculoskeletal Disease wasn't revealed through the objective inspection. And that's because the Musculoskeletal Disease appears for the most part due to muscular defect so it is impossible to diagnose the muscle by X-ray diagnosing the bone and it is also impossible to diagnose the fine damage of the muscle or tendon even by advanced device like MRI. As the nervous blood vessels or acupunctures pass through or are next to the muscle, the tension of the muscle put pressure on these so can become the direct or indirect causes of various kinds of pains or intern diseases. But in spite of that, for lack of proper equipment diagnosing the state of the muscle(Shortened.. Relaxed... or Hardened...) the muscle has been disregarded or neglected intentionally or unintentionally. While many people think themselves to be a muscular expert, if they don't see the shape of the muscle, that is just like blind treatment. But as now the equipment diagnosing the state of the muscle is developed, it seems that this problem can be settled. It was attempted in this study that the muscle or skeleton of the Musculoskeletal disease patients was diagno the treatment order and method were decided by a questionnaire survey and simple inspection, and the Musculoskeletal correction exercise using the muscle management and sling system made them escape from the Musculoskeletal disease, turning their muscle into more flexible and stronger muscle. As a result notwithstanding the limited treatment period '12 times', the improvement rate was as high as 74%, which showed that the muscle management and Musculoskeletal correction exercise had a great effect on the symptom improvement of the patients. If the treatment times had increased, the improvement rate also would have increased more.
