  • A procedure for determination of performance point was developed based on the concept of the direct displacement-based design method. Using the proposed procedure, parametric study has been performed for various natural periods of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. The proposed method was also applied to a 10-story steel frame, and the results were compared to those from the capacity spectrum method and the time history analysis. It was found from the comparison that there were good agreement between the results.

  • For buildings subjected to blast loading, structural failure can be categorized into local failure (direct blast effects) and progressive collapse (consequential effects). In direct blast effects, the intensive blast pressures create localized failure of structural elements such as exterior columns and walls. Columns, and their behaviour, play a key role in these situations. Therefore investigating the behaviour of columns under blast loading is very important to estimate the strength, safety and reliability of the whole structure. When a building is subjected to blast loading, it experiences huge loading pressures and undergoes great displacement and plastic behaviour. In order to study the behaviour of an element under blast loading, in addition to elastic properties of materials, plastic and elastic-plastic properties of materials and sections are needed. In this paper, using analytical studies and nonlinear time-history analysis by Ansys software, the effects of shape of column sections and boundary conditions, on behaviour and local failure of steel columns under blast load are studied. This study identifies the importance of elastic-plastic properties of sections and proposes criteria for choosing the best section and boundary conditions for columns to resist blast loading.

  • A direct shear test is classified roughly by one side simple shear test of confining horizontal displacement type and torsional shear test of non-confining one. Direct shear test that has been widely used so far has some problems with test apparatus, testing and the analysis, and in particular that its strength value is everestimated in sandy soils. Also, progressive failure of shearing process happens from shear apparatus restriction and because the shear strain and shear stress are erratic in specimen, we can not define the shear strain value. In the meantime, a simple shear test having advantage of direct shear test is an ideal test method that can get stress-strain relation on shear because it can deliver constant shearing deformation to specimen. However, simple shear test cannot be used practically, because its structure makes tester manufacturing difficult. This paper described a on outline of test apparatus, improvement of test method, and constant pressure test results based on the obtained from improved direct shear apparatus and the standardization of JGS soil testing method.

  • This study focused on the direct blending of bonding agents (resorcinol, hexamethylenetetramine, NaOH) into rubber compound to simplify the composite manufacturing process. The mechanism of direct blending system was studied by comparing the following two cases. The one is direct blending of bonding agents into rubber compound and then allows the reaction (Case I). The other is mixing of reactant obtained by reaction of bonding agents (Case II). According to the morphology analysis, the Case II showed the clean interfacial area between bonding agents and matrix rubber, while the Case I created the new interphase under proper processing condition. Also, the optimum adhesion strength between SBR and nylon cord could be obtained with bonding agents whose molar ratios of resprcinol/hexamethylenetetramine was 1.2/1 in the recipes.

  • Indoor air quality can be affected by indoor sources, ventilation, decay and outdoor levels. Although technologies exist to measure these factors, direct measurements are often difficult. The purpose of this study was to develop an alternative method to characterize indoor environmental factors by multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Daily indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations were measured for 30 consecutive days in 28 houses in Brisbane, Australia, and for 21 consecutive days in 37 houses in Seoul, Korea. Using a mass balance model and regression analysis, penetration factor (ventilation rate divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) and source strength factor (source strength divided by the sum of ventilation rate and deposition constant) were calculated using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements. Subsequently, the ventilation rate and $NO_2$ source strength were estimated. Geometric means of ventilation rate were 1.44 ACH in Brisbane, assuming a residential $NO_2$ deposition constant of 1.05 $hr^{-1}$, and 1.36 ACH in Seoul, with the measured residential $NO_2$ deposition constant of 0.94 $hr^{-1}$. Source strengths of $NO_2$ were 15.8 $\pm$ 18.2 ${\mu}g$/$m^3$.hr and 44.7 $\pm$ 38.1${\mu}g$/$m^3$.hr in Brisbane and Seoul, respectively. In conclusion, indoor environmental factors were effectively characterized by this method using multiple indoor and outdoor measurements.

  • This research article reported the nonlinear finite solutions of the nonlinear flexural strength and stress behaviour of nano sandwich graded structural shell panel under the combined thermomechanical loading. The nanotube sandwich structural model is derived mathematically using the higher-order displacement polynomial including the full geometrical nonlinear strain-displacement equations via Green-Lagrange relations. The face sheets of the sandwich panel are assumed to be carbon nanotube-reinforced polymer composite with temperature dependent material properties. Additionally, the numerical model included different types of nanotube distribution patterns for the sandwich face sheets for the sake of variable strength. The required equilibrium equation of the graded carbon nanotube sandwich structural panel is derived by minimizing the total potential energy expression. The energy expression is further solved to obtain the deflection values (linear and nonlinear) via the direct iterative method in conjunction with finite element steps. A computer code is prepared (MATLAB environment) based on the current higher-order nonlinear model for the numerical analysis purpose. The stability of the numerical solution and the validity are verified by comparing the published deflection and stress values. Finally, the nonlinear model is utilized to explore the deflection and the stresses of the nanotube-reinforced (volume fraction and distribution patterns of carbon nanotube) sandwich structure (different core to face thickness ratios) for the variable type of structural parameter (thickness ratio, aspect ratio, geometrical configurations, constraints at the edges and curvature ratio) and unlike temperature loading.

  • The direct brazing technology which could be used for the simplification of brazing process and the improvement of brazed joint quality was studied with $Al_2O_3$ and stainless steels. The brazing of $Al_2O_3$ to STS304 or STS430 was performed under different brazing conditions such as brazing filler metal, temperature, heating rate and brazing time. Microstructural observation and chemical analysis be SEM/EPAM were carried out to verify the quality of brazed joints. 4-point bending strength of brazed joints was also measured to find the optimal brazing conditions. The results showed that, in brazing of $Al_2O_3$, the mixed oxide layer resulted from the reaction between Ti in filler metal and oxide layer on the material surface to be brazed was found to be bery important for the joint quality. The width of oxide layer varied with the brazing conditions such as brazing time, heating rate and chemical composition of filler metals. The strength of brazed joints was more affected by the type of materials and their thermal properties than by brazing heat cycle.

  • The present study is focused on the behavior and design of perforated steel storage rack columns under axial compression. These columns may exhibit different types of behavior and levels of strength owing to their peculiar features including their complex cross-section forms and perforations along the member. In the present codes of practice, the design of these columns is carried out using analytical formulas which are supported by experimental tests described in the relevant code document. Recently proposed analytical approaches are used to estimate the load carrying capacity of axially compressed steel storage rack columns. Experimental and numerical studies were carried out to verify the proposed approaches. The experimental study includes compression tests done on members of different lengths, but of the same cross-section. A comparison between the analytical and the experimental results is presented to identify the accuracy of the recently proposed analytical approaches. The proposed approach includes modifications in the Direct Strength Method to include the effects of perforations (the so-called reduced thickness approach). CUFSM and CUTWP software programs are used to calculate the elastic buckling parameters of the studied members. Results from experimental and analytical studies compared very well. This indicates the validity of the recently proposed approaches for predicting the ultimate strength of steel storage rack columns.
