This study introduces a method for estimating Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) using Broadband Aerosol Optical Depth (BAOD) derived from direct normal irradiance and meteorological factors observed between 2016 and 2017. Through correlation analyses between BAOD and atmospheric components such as Rayleigh scattering, water vapor, and tropospheric nitrogen dioxide, significant relationships were identified, enabling accurate AOD estimation. The methodology demonstrated high correlation coefficients and low Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) compared to actual AOD500 measurements, indicating that the attenuation effects of water vapor and the direct impact of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide concentration are crucial for precise aerosol optical depth estimation. The application of BAOD for estimating AOD500 across various time scales-hourly, daily, and monthly-showed the approach's robustness in understanding aerosol distributions and their optical properties, with a high coefficient of determination (0.96) for monthly average AOD500 estimates. This study simplifies the aerosol monitoring process and enhances the accuracy and reliability of AOD estimations, offering valuable insights into aerosol research and its implications for climate modeling and air quality assessment. The findings underscore the viability of using BAOD as a surrogate for direct AOD500 measurements, presenting a promising avenue for more accessible and accurate aerosol monitoring practices, crucial for improving our understanding of aerosol dynamics and their environmental impacts.

Images taken by geostationary satellite may be used to estimate solar irradiance fluxes at earth's surface. It is based on the empirical correlation between a satellite derived cloud index and the irradiance at the ground. For the validation, estimated direct normal Insolation is compared with observed direct normal Insolation at 16 sites over the Korean peninsular from January 1982 to December 2010. Estimated direct normal Insolation shows reliable results with average deviation of -5.4 to +5.9% from the measured values and the yearly averaged direct normal Insolation of Korean peninsula was turned out to be 2.93 $kW/m^2/day$.
Long-term solar irradiance data are required for reliable performance evaluation and feasibility analysis of solar photovoltaic systems. However, measurement data of the global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are only available for major cities in Korea. Neither the direct normal irradiance (DNI) nor the diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) are available, which are also needed to calculate the irradiance on the tilted surface of PV array. It is a simple approach to take advantage of the decomposition model that extracts DNI and DHI from GHI. In this study, we investigate variations of solar PV power estimation due to the choice of decomposition model. The GHI data from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were used and different sets of typical meteorological year (TMY) data using some well-known decomposition models were generated. Then, power outputs with the different TMY data were calculated, and a variation of 3.7% was estimated due to the choice of decomposition model.

This study is to validate the K University daylight measurement system according to the CIE guide of recommended practice of daylight measurement. In this study global irradiance, illuminance, direct normal illuminance, diffuse irradiance, illuminance and vertical illuminances(North, West, South, East) were measured and compared in accordance with the CIE quality control test. Field monitoring was conducted from 1st August to 15th August 2010. Results for the CIE tests 1 to 4 showed an accuracy of 100%. This indicates that the K University daylight measurement system is reliable and the measurement data would be useful for further daylight researches.
Decomposition models are essential in TMY development and solar energy system design. Up until recently, only a few decomposition model related researches are implemented in Korea due to lack of measured direct normal solar irradiance. In contrast, numerous researches have been conducted in various countries, and some quasi-universal composition models have been recommended by several papers. In this research, three decomposition models - Watanabe model, Reindl-2 model and Engerer1 model - are selected and their site-fitted coefficients are developed using measured direct normal solar irradiance in Seoul. R-squared, RMSE, MBE of the site-fitted models are compared with the case of original coefficients and then each other. The comparison result shows that the Reindl-2 model with site-fitted coefficients is best suitable for Seoul. Further researches will be conducted to find the best model using more various measured data of Korean cities and site-fitting methods.

Direct-normal, total horizontal and diffuse horizontal irradiance data obtained from a multi-filter rotating shadowband radiometer over seven different wavelength bands (416nm, 151nm, 616nm, 675nm, 870nm and 940nm and the entire spectrum) has been analyzed at Kwangju, South Korea from June 1998 December 2000. The maximum hourly global radiation flux ranged from 0.44 MJ/$m^2$ to 2.68 MJ/$m^2$ at around 11:00-12:00 Hr local time while the maximum hourly diffuse radiation flux ranged from about 0.96 MJ/$m^2$ to 1.37 MJ/$m^2$. The maximum hourly direct irradiance ranged from 1.42 MJ/$m^2$ to 2.92 MJ/$m^2$ from June1998-2000. During the period under consideration, the average monthly global radiation recorded were 13.09 MJ/$m^2$/day, 10.58MJ/$m^2$/day and 9.78MJ/$m^2$/day for years 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively, while the diffuse irradiance were 6.54 MJ/$m^2$/day, 5.33 MJ/$m^2$/day and 5.14 MJ/$m^2$/day for f998, 1999 and 2000 respectively. The direct irradiance values at the site were 11.63 MJ/$m^2$/day, 8.24MJ/$m^2$/day and 7.75 MJ/$m^2$/day for 1998, f999 and 2000 respectively. It was observed that each of the years has its own unique meteorological parameters that affect the quality and quantity of radiation received for each month. The annual average daily fractions of the diffuse to the global radiation (KD) were 0.51, 0.61 and 0.59 for years 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively. Analysis indicated that the average daily KD ranged from 0.13 to a maximum value of 0.99 in May for irradiance measured at the broadband channel while the maximum and minimum KD value of 0.91 and 0.23 was recorded at wavelength band 870nm and 940nm in January and September respectively. The lowest average daily clearness index (Kt) value recorded was 0.03 in May (Spring) and the annual average daily clearness indexes are 0.45, 0.34 and 0.35 for years 1998, f999 and 2000 respectively. The frequency of clear days annually at Kwangju is 67.95%, 29.57% and 40.72% for years 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively.

The reliable Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) data, sometimes called Test Reference Year (TRY) data, are necessary in the feasibility study of renewable energy installation as well as zero energy building. In Korea, there are available TMY data; TMY from Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), TRY from the Korean Solar Energy Society (KSES) and TRY from Passive House Institute Korea (PHIKO). This study aims at examining their characteristics by using Principle Component Analysis (PCA) at six ground observing stations. First step is to investigate the annual averages of meteorological elements from TMY data and their standard deviations. Then, PCA is done to find which principle components are derived from different TMY data. Temperature and solar irradiance are determined as the main principle component of TMY data produced by KIER and KSES at all stations whereas TRY data from PHIKO does not show similar result from those by KIER and KSES.
