  • In this paper, we compare the timing synchronization performance of the adaptive filter to that of the correlator in direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) systems. The test variables used in the code synchronization are statistically analyzed for both schemes, and then the obtained results are used in calculating the detection and false alarm probabilities. Based on the derived probabilities, the synchronization performance is compared and the simulation is followed. Analysis and simulation results show that the correlator outperforms the adaptive filter under most synchronization environments.

  • In this paper, binary pulse-antipodal modulation (2PAM) direct-sequence (DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) system is applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system using vertical bell lab layered space-time (V-BLAST) structure to achieve high-data-rate communications over indoor wireless channels. The relationship between antenna dimension and BER performance of 2PAM DS UWB MIMO system is discussed. In the receiver of UWB-MIMO system, various MIMO detection algorithms such as zero-forcing (ZF), ZF-ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC), minimum-mean-square-error (MMSE), MMSE-OSIC and maximum likelihood (ML) are comparatively studied.

  • Declutching control is applied to a hemispherical wave energy converter with direct linear electric Power-Take-Off systems oscillating in heave direction in both regular and irregular waves. The direct linear Power-Take-Off system can be simplified as a mechanical spring and damper system. Time domain model is applied to dynamics of the hemispherical wave energy converter in both regular and irregular waves. And state space model is used to replace the convolution term in time domain equation of the heave oscillation of the converter due to its inconvenience in analyzing the controlled motion of the converters. The declutching control strategy is conducted by optimal command theory based on Pontryagin's maximum principle to gain the controlled optimum sequence of Power-Take-Off forces. The results show that the wave energy converter with declutching control captures more energy than that without control and the former's amplitude and velocity is relatively larger. However, the amplification ratio of the absorbed power by declutching control is only slightly larger than 1. This may indicate that declutching control method may be inapplicable for oscillating wave energy converters with direct linear Power-Take-Off systems in real random sea state, considering the error of prediction of the wave excitation force.

  • To date, more than 150 exo-solar planets have been observed by various methods such as spectroscopic, photometric, astrometric, gravitational lensing, pulsar timing methods. However, all these are indirect methods; they do not directly image the planets. Only free-floating planets or their 'ana-log' have been directly detected so far. Thus the next milestone is the direct imaging of any kinds of planetary mass objects orbiting around normal (young) stars, which might have been associated with protoplanetary disks, the sites of planet formation. I will describe some SUBARU efforts to detect self-luminous young giant planets as companions as well as direct imaging of the protoplanetary disks of ${\~}$100 AU size. The results of near-infrared coronagraphic imaging with adaptive optics are briefly presented on AB Aur, HD 142527, T Tau, and DH Tau. Our results demonstrate the importance of high-resolution (${\~}$0.1 arcsec) direct imaging over indirect observations such as modeling based on spectral energy distributions. The SUBARU observations are a prelude to ALMA from the morphological point of view.

  • For robot navigation and visual reconstruction , structure from motion (SFM) is an active issue in computer vision community and its properties are also becoming well understood. As a drawback in SFM, it is well known that the SFM methods, using small motion model such as optical flow and direct method, have inevitably motion ambiguity between translation and rotation, which is called bas-relief ambiguity. In this paper based on the robust direct method using stereo image sequence, we present a new method for improving those ambiguities. Basically, the direct method uses nearly all image pixels for estimating motion parameters and depths, and global optimization techniques are adopted for finding its solution ...

  • Some of the critical changes in the revised 2015 Korean Mathematics curriculum were that direct proportion and inverse proportion were moved from elementary school to middle school and that supplementary content related to correlation was included. These decisions were based on comparative studies of international curriculum. Therefore in this study, we selected countries for comparison; United States, England, France, Finland, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and Taiwan. We looked into the timing and scope for direct/inverse proportion and correlation in curricula of these countries. Along with this, we established four criteria; vertical sequence, horizontal sequence, external connection, and internal connection for an analysis framework. Then we compared and analysed the direct/inverse proportion and correlation in each curriculum. As a result, in most of these curricula, the direct/inverse proportions are introduced at middle school or are introduced at elementary school and then developed further at middle school. Most of curriculums on direct/inverse proportion and correlation match the four criteria. Correlation is introduced in high school mathematics in all counties except Finland and it is dealt in diverse context introducing related concepts, for example, correlation coefficient, regression straight line, and least square. We suggested that it is necessary to refer these international trends for the next revision of curriculum.

  • The intergenic spacer(IGS) sequence of Fusarium oxysporum have been reported to provide reliable information concerning intraspecific variation and phylogeny of fungal species. The eleven strains of Fusarium oxysporum and its formae speciales belonging to section Elegans were compared with sequencing analysis. The direct sequencing of partial IGS was carried out using PCR with primer NIGS1(5'-CTTCGCCTCGATTTCCCCAA-3')/NIGS2(5'-TCGTCGCCGACAGTTTTCTG-3') and internal primer NIGS3(5'-TCGAGGATCGATTCGAGG-3')/NIGS4(5'-CCTCGAATCGATCCTCGA-3'). A single PCR product was found for each strain. The PCR fragments were sequenced and revealed a few within species polymorphisms at the sequence level. The size of partial IGS sequencing of F. oxysporum was divided into three groups; $526{\sim}527$ bp including F. o. f. sp. chrysanthemi, cucumerinum, cyclaminis, lycopersici, and fragariae; $514{\sim}516$ bp including F. o. f. sp. lilii, conglutinans, and raphani; 435 bp for F. o. f. sp. cucumerinum from Korea. Sequence analysis of PCR products showed that transitions were more frequent than transversions as well as the average numbers of substitution per site were range 0.41% to 3.54%.

  • Abstract A direct approach was used to retrieve active lipases from Paenibacillus polymyxa genome databases. Twelve putative lipase genes were tested using a typical lipase sequence rule built on the basis of a consensus sequence of a catalytic triad and oxyanion hole. Among them, six genes satisfied the sequence rule and had similarity (about 25%) with known bacterial lipases. To obtain the six lipase proteins, lipase genes were expressed in E. coli cells and lipolytic activities were measured by using tributyrin plate and pnitrophenyl caproate. One of them, contig 160-26, was expressed as a soluble and active form in E. coli cell. After purifying on Ni-NTA column, its detailed biochemical properties were characterized. It had a maximum hydrolytic activity at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 7- 8, and was stable up to $40^{\circ}C$ and in the range of pH 5- 8. It most rapidly hydrolyzed pNPC$_6$ among various PNPesters. The other contigs were expressed more or less as soluble forms, although no lipolytic activities were detected. As they have many conserved regions with lipase 160-26 as well as other bacterial lipases throughout their equence, they are suggested as true lipase genes.

  • In this paper, we investigate the performance of the direct sequence/spread spectrum multiple access (DS/SSMA) system using the Trellis coded modulation (TCM) technique in both multipath fading and multi-user channel environments. For this, an expression that represents the pairwise bit error probability of the system is derived. Unlike the existing results that were performed in a more restrictive condition considering only the multi-user effect, the effects of the multipath fading as well as the multi-user environments are compositely taken into account. In order to check the validity of our analysis, although not direct, computer simulations are carried out, and they show that our expression matches exactly with the previous work for which the TCM and the multipath effects were disregarded. Moreover, it is observed that the performance of the Trellis coded DS/SSMA system can be improved dramatically comparing to the uncoded QPSK system in the multipath fading and multi-user channel environments.

  • Code-Division Multiple-Access(CDMA) allows several users simultaneous access to a common channel by assigning a distinct pseudonoise sequence called spectrum code to each user. Each user in a CDMA system uses a assigned spectrum code to modulate their signal. Choosing the codes used to modulate the signal is very important in the performance of CDMA systems. The best performance will occur when there is good separation between the signal of a desired user and the signals of other users. The receiver synchronizes the code to recover the data. The use of an independent code allows multiple users to access the same frequency band at the same time. In this paper we propose a generalized model of non-linear binary sequence using trace function and analyze cross-correlation of these sequences. These sequences with low correlation, large linear span and large family size, in a direct-sequence spread spectrum communication system, help to minimize multiple access interference, increase security degree of system and enlarge user number.
