Combustion Characteristics and Exhaust Emissions in Spark-ignition Engine Using Gasoline-ammonia (가솔린 엔진에서 가솔린-암모니아 혼합 연료의 연소 및 배기 특성)

  • The effect of gaseous ammonia direct injection on the engine performance and exhaust emissions in gasoline-ammonia dual fueled spark-ignition engine was investigated in this study. Results show that based on the gasoline contribution engine power increases as the ammonia injection timing and duration is advanced and increased, respectively. However, as the initial amount of gasoline is increased the maximum power output contribution from ammonia is reduced. For gasoline-ammonia, the appropriate injection timing is found to range from 320 BTDC at low loads to 370 BTDC at high loads and the peak pressures are slightly lower than that for gasoline due to the slow flame speed of ammonia, resulting in the reduction of combustion efficiency. The brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) for gasoline-ammonia has little difference compared to the BSEC for gasoline only. Ammonia direct injection causes slight reduction of $CO_2$ and CO for all presented loads but significantly increases HC due to the low combustion efficiency of ammonia. Also, ammonia direct injection results in both increased ammonia and NOx in the exhaust due to formation of fuel NOx and ammonia slip.

  • A quasidimensional program is developed for a four stroke cycle homogeneous GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine. It includes models for spray, burning rate and chemistry to predict knock and emissions. With early injection a homogeneous GDI engine goes through spark ignited, turbulent premixed combustion as in PFI (Port Fuel Injection) engines. The cylinder charge is divided into unburned and burned zone with the latter divided into multiple zones of equal mass to resolve temperature stratification. Validation is performed against measured pressure traces, NOx and CO emissions at different load and RPM conditions. Comparison is made between an empirical knock model and predictions by the chemistry model in this work.

  • The performance of a direct-injection type diesel engine often depends on the shape of combustion chamber, strength of swirl or squish, the number of nozzle holes, etc. This is of course because the process of combustion in the cylinder was affected by the mixture formation process. In this paper, the relation betweeen the flame progress and the performance of engine was clarified by changing variously the combustion process in cylinder with a special method, and thus the measures for improving the combustion were indirectly examined. Namely it was investigated what effect the flame progress in cylinder, which was varied with the locality of the lean premixture injected by the auxiliary injection method using an auxiliary injection nozzle in advance at the place where main spray was injected later, has on the engine output, the exhaust smoke density and the NO concentration in exhaust gas.

Steady-Flow Characteristics and Its Influence on Spray for Direct Injection Diesel Engine

  • Flow and spray characteristics are critical factors that affect the performance and exhaust emissions of a direct injection diesel engine. It is well known that the swirl control system is one of the useful ways to improve the fuel consumption and emission reduction rate in a diesel engine. However, until now there have only been a few studies on the effect of flow on spray. Because of this, the relationship between the flow pattern in the cylinder and its influence on the behavior of the spray is in need of investigation. First, in-cylinder flow distributions for 4-valve cylinder head of DI (Direct Injection) Diesel engine were investigated under steady-state conditions for different SCV (Swirl Control Valve) opening angles using a steady flow rig and 2-D LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry). It was found that swirl flow was more dominant than that of tumble in the experimented engine. In addition, the in-cylinder flow was quantified in terms of swirl/tumble ratio and mean flow coefficient. As the SCV opening angle was increased, high swirl ratios more than 3.0 were obtained in the case of SCV -70° and 90°. Second, spray characteristics of the intermittent injection were investigated by a PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometer) system. A Time Dividing Method (TDM) was used to analyze the microscopic spray characteristics. It was found that the atomization characteristics such as velocity and SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter) of the spray were affected by the in-cylinder swirl ratio. As a result, it was concluded that the swirl ratio improves atomization characteristics uniformly.

Exhaust Gas Recirculation/Water Injection Experimental Results for NOx Emission Reduction in Diesel Engine

  • This paper presents the static characteristics of EGR-WI combined system. The water injection system was statically characterized by recording the engine exhaust outlet $NO_x$ emissions for comparison with baseline $NO_x$ emissions. Effects of the water injection system on CO and HC emissions and fuel consumption were examined. The research engine used for these experiments was a 103 kW turbocharged, intercooled, 2.5 L VM Motori CIDI engine equipped with a cooled EGR system. Water injection in the intake system demonstrated the potential for significant reductions in engine outlet $NO_x$ emissions. The system has reduced engine outlet $NO_x$ emissions by 40-50%, but caused significant increases in CO and HC emissions, particularly at low loads. Fuel consumption effects were minimal.

  • After the recent fabrication of diesel vehicle exhaust gas by Volkswagen, nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) and particulate matter (PM) are drawing attention as representative pollutants included in exhaust gas. When gasoline and diesel fuels are combusted through direct injection into a combustion chamber at high pressure, PM emission is actually increased. To find a solution to this problem, a basic study was conducted to derive an optimized variable for combustion of compressed natural gas (CNG) by applying CNG, acknowledged as a clean fuel, to direct injection system. The essence of this study is in the introduction of a radical ignition technology for compressed natural gas (RI-CNG) in a sub-chamber type engine. The direct injection system was applied to a sub-chamber to remove residual gas from previous combustion cycle. In addition, optimal mixer distribution was achieved by precisely setting ignition timing based on fuel injection timing and excess air ratio.

  • This study is numerical analysis about optimal conditions of GDICI (gasoline direct injection compression ignition) engine operation using intake preheating. Numerical modeling was performed by using the KIVA-3V Release2 code integrated Chemkin chemistry solver II. For validation of numerical model, experiments were performed on a single-cylinder engine. Throughout the numerical simulations under variable conditions, the ranges of optimal conditions were found.

Flame Propagation Characteristics in a Heavy Duty Liquid Phase LPG Injection SI Engine by Flame Visualization (대형 액상 LPG 분사식 SI 엔진에서 화염 가시화를 이용한 희박영역에서의 화염 전파특성 연구)

  • Combustion and flame propagation characteristics of the liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) engine were investigated in a single cylinder optical engine. Lean bum operation is needed to reduce thermal stress of exhaust manifold and engine knock in a heavy duty LPG engine. An LPLI system has advantages on lean operation. Optimized engine design parameters such as swirl, injection timing and piston geometry can improve lean bum performance with LPLI system. In this study, the effects of piston geometry along with injection timing and swirl ratio on flame propagation characteristics were investigated. A series of bottom-view flame images were taken from direct visualization using an W intensified high-speed CCD camera. Concepts of flame area speed, In addition to flame propagation patterns and thermodynamic heat release analysis, was introduced to analyze the flame propagation characteristics. The results show the correlation between the flame propagation characteristics, which is related to engine performance of lean region, and engine design parameters such as swirl ratio, piston geometry and injection timing. Stronger swirl resulted in foster flame propagation under open valve injection. The flame speed was significantly affected by injection timing under open valve injection conditions; supposedly due to the charge stratification. Piston geometry affected flame propagation through squish effects.

Water Injection/Urea SCR System Experimental Results for NOx Reduction on a Light Duty Diesel Engine

  • The effects of water injection (WI) and urea injection for NOx on a 4-cylinder Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine were investigated experimentally. For water injection, it was installed at the intake pipe and the water quantity was controlled at the intake manifold and Manifold Air Flow (MAF) temperatures while the urea injection was located at the exhaust pipe and the urea quantity was controlled by NOx quantity and MAF. The effects of WI system, urea-SCR system and the combined system were investigated with and without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Several experiments were performed to characterize the urea-SCR system, using engine operating points of varying raw NOx emissions. The results of the Stoichiometric Urea Flow (SUF) and NOx map were obtained. In addition, NOx results were illustrated according to the engine speed and load. It is concluded that the NOx reduction effects of the combined system without the EGR were better than those with the EGR-based engine.

  • In comparison with gasoline engine, LPG direct injection engine has some advantages not only in emission and fuel efficiency but also in prevention of power decrease and back fire etc. which are disadvantages of conventional LPG engine. In this study, comparision tests of the incylinder spray and combustion characteristics between of LPG and gasoline fuels were performed in the RCEM as a basic research for the development of future LPG engine with low emission and high fuel efficiency During the direct injection of LPG fuel and gasoline into the inside of RCEM, spray development characteristics according to the injection condition have been photographed by the high speed shadow graph methods. The conditions for the optimum mixture distribution of LPG and gasoline fuels are achievable at the selected ignition timing, respectively.
