A high-pressure fuel pump is a key component in a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine; thus, understanding its flow characteristics is essential for improving the engine power and fuel efficiency. In this study, AMESim, which is a hydraulic analysis program, was used to analyze the performance of the high-pressure fuel pump. However, since AMESim uses a one-dimensional model for the system analysis, it does not accurately analyze the complicated flow characteristics. Thus, Fluent, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, was used to calculate the flow rates and net forces at the intake and discharge ports of the high-pressure fuel pump where turbulent flow occurs. The CFD analysis results for various pressure conditions and valve lifts were used as look-up tables for the AMEsim model. The CFD analysis results complemented the AMEsim results, and thus, improved the accuracy of the performance analysis results for the high-pressure fuel pump.

$N_2O$(Nitrous Oxide) is known as the third major GHG(Green House Gas) following $CO_2$(Carbon Oxide) and $CH_4$(Methane). The GWP(Global Warming Potential) factor of $N_2O$ is 310 times as large as that of $CO_2$ because $N_2O$ in the atmosphere is very stable, and it becomes a source of secondary contamination after photo-degradation in the stratosphere. Investigation on the cause of the $N_2O$ formation have been continuously reported by several researchers on power sources with continuous combustion form, such as a boiler. However, in the diesel engine, research on $N_2O$ generation which has effected from fuel components has not been conducted. Therefore, in this research, author has investigated about $N_2O$ emission rates which was changed by nitrogen and sulfur concentration in fuel on the diesel engine. The test engine was a 4-stroke direct injection diesel engine with maximum output of 12 kW at 2600rpm, and operating condition of that was set up at a 75% load. Nitrogen and sulfur concentrations in fuel were raised by using six additives : nitrogen additives were Pyridine, Indole, Quinoline, Pyrrol and Propionitrile and sulfur additive was Di-tert-butyl-disulfide. In conclusion, diesel fuels containing nitrogen elements less than 0.5% did not affect $N_2O$ emissions in the all concentrations and kinds of the additive agent in the fuel. However, increasing of the sulfur additive in fuel increased $N_2O$ emission in exhaust gas.

It has been generally recognized that $N_2O$(Nitrous Oxide) emission from marine diesel engines has a close correlation with $SO_2$(Sulfur Dioxide) emission, and diversity of fuel elements using ships affects characteristics of the $N_2O$ emission. According to recent reports, in case of existence of an enough large NO(Nitric Oxide) generated as fuel combustion, effect of the $SO_2$ emission in exhaust gas on the $N_2O$ formation is more vast than effect of the NO. Therefore, $N_2O$ formation due to the $SO_2$ element operates on a important factor in EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) systems for NOx reduction. An aim of this experimental study is to investigate that intake gas of the diesel engine with increasing of $SO_2$ flow rate affects $N_2O$ emission in exhaust gas. A test engine using this experiment was a 4-stroke direct injection diesel engine with maximum output of 12 kW at 2600rpm, and operating condition was set up at a 75% load. A standard $SO_2$ gas with 0.499%($m^3/m^3$) was used for changing of $SO_2$ concentration in intake gas. In conclusion, the diesel fuel included out sulfur elements did mot emit the $SO_2$ emission, and the $SO_2$ emission in exhaust gas according as increment of the $SO_2$ standard gas had almost the same ratio compared with $SO_2$ rate in mixture inlet gas. Furthermore, the $N_2O$ element in exhaust gas was formed as $SO_2$ mixture in intake gas because increment of $SO_2$ flow rate in intake gas increased $N_2O$ emission. Hence, diesel fuels included sulfur compounds were combined into $SO_2$ in combustion, and $N_2O$ in exhaust gas should be generated to react with NO and $SO_2$ which exist in a combustion chamber.

Combustion processes in an optically-accessible single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with a highpressure common-rail injection system were investigated for JP-8 and diesel. Direct imaging and two-color thermometry were employed to verify the emission trend for both fuels. The combustion process was characterized by image analysis with focus on luminosity. The results of two-color thermometry were analyzed on the basis of the flame temperature and KL factor distribution. Analysis of the combustion process by direct imaging showed that the ignition delay was longer for JP-8 than for diesel, while the flame was extinguished rapidly. Analysis of the flame luminosity showed that the combustion intensity was higher for diesel and that the flame lasted for a longer duration in this case. Two-color thermometry results showed that the high-temperature region extended over a large area during JP-8 combustion, implying the formation of a large amount of $NO_x$. In addition, the KL factor showed low level over a large area and relatively homogeneous in the case of JP-8 combustion, which implied that less smoke was produced when using this fuel.

Recently, HSDI (High Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine has been spotlighted as a next generation engine because it has a good potential for high thermal efficiency and fuel economy. This study was carried out to investigate the in-cylinder flow characteristics generated in a 4-valve small diesel cylinder head with a tangential and helical intake port. The flow characteristics such as coefficient of flow rate(Cf), swirl ratio (Rs), and mass flow rate (ms) were measured in the steady flow test rig using the impulse swirl meter and the analysis of in-cylinder flow field was conducted by experiment using the PIV and calculation using the commercial CFD code. As the results from steady flow test indicate, the mass flow rate of the cylinder head with a short distance between the two intake ports is increased over 13% than that of the other head. However, the non-dimensional swirl ratio is decreased approximately 15%. From in-cylinder flow characteristics obtained by PIV and CFD calculation, we found that the swirl center was eccentric from the cylinder center and the velocity distribution became uniform near the TDC. In addition, the results of the calculation are good agreement with the experimental results.

In this study, the applicability of the RNG k-.epsilon. model to the analysis of the complex flows is studied. The governing equations based on a non-orthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components are used and discretized by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The predicted results using the RNG k-.epsilon. model of three complex flows, i.e., the flow over a backward-facing step and a blunt flat plate, the flow around a 2D model car are compared to these from the standard k-.epsilon. model and experimental data. That of the unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow within a cylinder of reciprocating model engine including port/valve assembly and the spray characteristics within a chamber of direct injection model engine are compared to these from the standard k-.epsilon. model and experimental data. The results of reattachment length, separated eddy size, average surface pressure distribution using the RNG k-.epsilon. model show more reasonable trends comparing with the experimental data than those using the modified k-.epsilon. model. Although the predicted rms velocity using the modified k-.epsilon. model is lower considerably than the experimental data in incylinder flow with poppet valve, predicted axial and radial velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region show good agreements with the experimental data. The spray tip penetration predicted using the RNG k-.epsilon. model is more close to the experimental data than that using the modified k-.epsilon. model. The application of the RNG k-.epsilon. model seems to have some potential for the simulations of the unsteady turbulent flow within a port/valve-cylinder assembly and the spray characteristics over the modified k-.epsilon. model.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of aromatics and T90 temperature for high cetane number (CN) of diesel fuels on combustion and exhaust emissions in low-temperature diesel combustion in a 1.9 L common rail direct injection diesel engine at 1500 rpm and 2.6 bar BMEP. Four sets of fuels with CN 55, aromatic content of 20% or 45% (vol. %), and T90 temperature of $270^{\circ}C$ or $340^{\circ}C$ were tested. Given engine operating conditions, all the fuels showed the same tendency of decrease of PM with an increase of an ignition delay time. At the same ignition delay time, the fuels with high T90 produced higher PM. At the same MFB50% location the amount of NOx was similar for all the fuels. Furthermore, at the same ignition delay time the amounts of THC and CO were similar as well for all the fuels. The amount of THC and CO increased with an extension of the ignition delay time mainly because of the increase of fuel-air over-mixing.

As the environmental pollution becomes serious global problem, the regulation of emission exhausted from automobiles is strengthened. Therefore, it is very important to know how to reduce the NOx and PM simultaneously in diesel engines, which has lot of merits such as high thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and durability. By this reason, the new concept called as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) engines are spotlighted because this concept reduced NOx and P.M. simultaneously. However, it is well known that HCCI engines increased HC and CO. Thus, the investigation of combustion characteristics which consists cool and hot flames for HCCI engines were needed to obtain the optimal combustion condition. In this study, combustion characteristics for direct injection type HCCI engine such as quantity of cool flame and hot flame, ignition timing and ignition delay were investigated to clarify the effects of these parameters on performance. The results revealed that diesel combustion showed the two-stage ignition of cool flame and hot flame, the rate of cool flame increase and hot flame decrease with increasing intake air temperature. On the other hand, the gasoline combustion is the single-stage ignition and ignition timing is near the TDC. In addition mixed fuel combustion showed different phenomenon, which depends on the ratio of gasoline component. Ignition timing of mixed fuel is retarded near the TDC and the ignition delay is increased according to ratio of gasoline.
Laminar burning velocities of propane- and iso-octane-air mixtures have been numerically modelled over a wide range of equivalence ratio, pressure and temperature. These correlations are applicable to the modelling of stratified charged combustion like that of lean bum and GDI engine combustion. The numerical models are based on the results calculated by PREMIX code with Sloane's detailed chemical reaction mechanism for propane and FlameMaster code with Peters' for iso-octane. Laminar burning velocity for two fuels showed a pressure and temperature dependence in the following form, in the range of $0.1{\sim}4MPa$, and $300{\sim}1000K$, respectively. $S_L={\alpha}\;{\exp}[-\xi({\phi}-{\phi}_m)^2-{\exp}\{-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)\}-{\xi}({\phi}-{\phi}_m)]$ where ${\phi}_m=1.07$, and both of ${\alpha}$ and ${\xi}$ are functions of pressure and temperature. Compared with the results of the existing models, those of the present one showed the good agreement of the recent experiment data, especially in the range of lean and rich sides. Judging from the calculated results of the stratified charged combustion by using STAR-CD, the above modelling prove to be more suitable than the other ones.

This study is to investigate the effect of an aromatic content in high cetane number (CN) fuels on exhaust emissions under low temperature diesel combustion, which expands the previous research about an aromatic content in low CN fuels. A 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine was run at 1500 rpm 2.6 bar BMEP with four fuel sets: an aromatic content of 20% (A20) or 45% (A45) with CN30, i.e. low CN fuels, and CN55, i.e. high CN fuels. Given experimental conditions, the trend of exhaust emissions in high CN fuels was inconsistent with that of low CN fuels which all produced nearly zero smoke but higher NOx for the high aromatic fuel (CN30-A45). For high CN fuels, however, the low aromatic fuel (CN55-A20) produced lower smoke than the high one (CN55-A45) while NOx was similar to each other. The cause of this discrepancy between high CN and low CN fuels is unclear whether it comes from that CN may be a dominant factor to govern exhaust emissions rather than an aromatic content or that the actual CN value of CN55-A45 is lower than CN55-A20. More decent fuel matrix should be prepared and further experiments are needed to confirm it.
