Bromate is a disinfection by-product generated mainly from the oxidation of bromide during the ozonation and disinfection process in order to remove pathogenic microorganism of drinking water, and classified as a possible human carcinogen by International Agency for Research of Cancer (IARC) and World Health Organization (WHO). For the purpose of determining the trace level concentration of bromate, several sensitive techniques are applied mostly based on suppressed conductivity detection and UV/Visible detection after postcolumn reaction (PCR). In this study, the suppressed conductivity detection method and the PCR-UV/Visible detection method through the triiodide reaction were compared to analyze the trace bromate in water samples and estimated for the availability of these analytical methods. In addtion, the state-of-the-art techniques was applied for the determination of trace level bromate in various water matrices, i.e., soft drinking water, hard drinking water, mineral water, swimming pool water, and raw water. In comparison of two analytical methods, it was found that the conductivity detection had the suitable advantage to simultaneously analyze bromate and inorganic anions, however, the bromate might not be precisely quantified due to the matrix effect especially by chloride ion. On the other hand, the trace bromate was analyzed effectively by the method of PCR-UV/Visible detection through triiodide reaction to satisfactorily minimize the matrix interference of chloride ion in various water samples, showing the good linearity and reproducibility. Furthermore, the method detection limit (MDL) and recovery were 0.161 ㎍/L and 101.0-108.1 %, respectively, with a better availability compared to conductivity detection.

Transmission performances of direct detection-based 100-Gb/s modulation formats are investigated and compared for metro area optical networks. The effects of optical signal-to-noise ratio sensitivity, chromatic dispersion, cross-channel nonlinearity, and transmission distance on the performance of differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (D8PSK), differential phase-shift keying plus three-level amplitude-shift keying (DPSK+3ASK), and dual-carrier differential quaternary phase-shift keying (DC-DQPSK) are evaluated. The performance of coherent dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) with block phase estimation and coherent DP-QPSK with digital differential detection are also presented for reference. According to our analysis, all three direct detection modulation formats could transmit a 100-Gb/s signal over several hundred kilometers of a single-mode fiber link. The results also show that DC-DQPSK outperforms D8PSK and DPSK+3ASK, and the performance of DC-DQPSK is comparable to that of coherent DP-QPSK with digital differential detection. The maximum transmission distance of DC-DQPSK is over 1,000 km, which is enough distance for metro applications.
The present study has been designed as a basic study on laboratory diagnosis of giardiasis and to demonstrate a more effective method for the detection of Giardia lamblia cyst with the inherent advantages of minimizing both the number of stool examinations required and the interval of stool collections for estimating the real state of prevalence in the shortest time possible. There were 3 subject groups of 75 children each currently residing in an orphanage in Gunsan city, Jeonbuk province from which stool specimens were collected every day, every other day, and every 3 days. The procedure is as follows: 1) resuspend the InKed sample after fixation with SAF solution 2) centrifuge the sediment for 1 min. at 2, 000 rpm after straining through gauze into a tube 3) divide the sediment into 3 parts and use them for direct fecal smear, formalin-ether concentration (MGL) and zinc sulfate ($ZnSO_4$) floatation techniques. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Overall infection rate after 10 trials showed a 60% positive indication. The positive rate among children under 4 years old was significantly higher than the rate in children over 4 years old. No significant difference in rate by sex was observed. 2. The results of eBaminations by direct fecal smear and MGL techniques appeared more accurate than that obtained by $ZnSO_4$ ftoatation method as indicated by a higher positive rate. Of all three methods concerned, combinations of two demonstrated a higher positive rate than that shown by any one alone. 3. In three consecutive examinations under varying conditions such as different days, the cyst detection rate by MGL technique indicated 83%. In 5 examinations under the same varying conditions, the indicated rate was 94%. 4. The interval of stool collection proved to be insignificant for the cyst detection rate. In conclusion, both MGL method and modified fecal direct smear can provide a good cyst detection rate of G. lamblia provided that more than 3 consecutive examinations of stool under varying conditions are carried out.
Demand for reliability and safety in modem systems has been increased in the research on fault detection and isolation. At traditional approaches to fault detection, redundant sensors have been used. More advanced methods are the residual analysis of signals which are created by the comparison between the actual plant behavior and the output response of a mathematical model. However, mathematical system models are difficult to obtain by using physical laws. These problems can be solved by system identification. In this paper, the transfer function of a direct current motor is estimated by using the system identification. And, the efficiency of the fault detector design is verified by using experiments.
This paper is aimed to develop a Lanchester type combat model for the direct-fire engagement. This model incorporates number of combatants, inter-firing time, detection time by movement, detection probability by the signature of fire, where the inter-firing time and the detection time are assumed to follow a negative exponential distribution. The approach to modeling is as follows : in the process of an engagement, a combatant takes one of the states('observing' state or 'firing' state), a combatant is initially in the observing state, if the combatant detects a target, he changes his state from 'observing' to 'firing' and will cause attrition to the opposing forces. Thus this transition mechanism is embodied into the differential equation form with each transition rate. A limited examination of the validity has been conducted by comparison with the Monte-Carlo simulation model 'BAGSIM', and with a traditional Deterministic Lanchester model.
Immunoassay of botulinum toxin (BTX) B type was investigated using two typed of biosensors: light addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. Urease-tagged and immuno-filtration capture method have been used for LAPS. Tag-free and direct binding real-time detection method have been used for SPR sensor. The detection limit of sandwich assay format with LAPS was 10 ng/ml, which was the lowest among methods tested. SPR has the advantage of being more convenient because tag-free direct binding assay can be used and reaction time was reduced, regardless of low sensitivity. This result shows that sandwich assay format with LAPS can be used as an alternative method of BTX mouse bioassay which is known as the most sensitive method for the detection of BTX.
A simple analytical method that allows direct monitoring of small amount of CO$_2$ in a CO$_2$ discharge tube which utilizes the optoacoustic detection technique is described. The dependence of the optoacoustic signal on the mole fraction of CO$_2$ was shown that the system responded linearly to the amount of CO$_2$ present in the miniature discharge cavity equipped with Cu electrodes. It was also found that fraction of dissociated CO$_2$ varied from 14 to 37% of the initial concentration which depended on the current and the pressure in the tube. This simple and easy detection method has proven to possess the practical advantages over the conventional systems for the study of CO$_2$ laser electrodes.
This paper considers the evaluation of the ecquistion performance for an accesschannel preamble based on a random access procedure of direct sequence code division multiple access(DS/CDMA) reverse link. The parallel acquistion technique that employs the single-well detection scheme and the multiple-dwell(double-dwell) detection scheme is mentioned. The acquisition performance for two detection schemes is compared in therms of the acquisition probability and the acquisition time. The parallel acquisition is done by a bank of N parallel I/Q noncoherent correlators. Expressions on the detection, false alarm, and miss probabilities of the single-dwell and multiple-dwell(double-well) detection schemes are derived for multiple H$_{1}$ cells and multipath Rayleight fading channel. comparing the single-dwell detection scheme with the multiple-dwell(double-dwell) detection scheme in the case of employing the parallel acquisition technique in the reverse link, the numerical results show that the single-dwell detection scheme deomonstrates a better performance.
A new direct colorimetric assay of microcystin in water and algal samples is proposed consisting of two procedures as follows: 1) the elimination of phosphorus in the sample and concentration of microcystin using a C(sub)18 cartridge, 2) the detection of the released phosphorus by the ascorbic acid method and determination of protein phosphatase (PP) inhibition by microcystin. The optimum amounts of phosphorylase ${\alpha}$ and PP-1 in 50 ${\mu}$L concentrated sample were 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/50${\mu}$L buffer and 1.0unit/50${\mu}$L buffer, respectively, for the best assay. The pH for the maximum activity of PP-1 was 8. The minimum detectable concentration for this method was about 0.02$\mu\textrm{g}$/L, which is sufficient to meet the proposed guideline level of 1$\mu\textrm{g}$ microcystin/L in drinking water. Consequently, it would seem that the proposed direct colorimetric assay using PP is a rapid, easy, and convenient method for the detection of microcystin in water and algal samples.

This paper proposes a technique for detecting a significant threat that attempts to get sensitive and confidential information such as usernames, passwords, credit card information, and more to target an individual or organization. By definition, a phishing attack happens when malicious people pose as trusted entities to fraudulently obtain user data. Phishing is classified as a type of social engineering attack. For a phishing attack to happen, a victim must be convinced to open an email or a direct message [1]. The email or direct message will contain a link that the victim will be required to click on. The aim of the attack is usually to install malicious software or to freeze a system. In other instances, the attackers will threaten to reveal sensitive information obtained from the victim. Phishing attacks can have devastating effects on the victim. Sensitive and confidential information can find its way into the hands of malicious people. Another devastating effect of phishing attacks is identity theft [1]. Attackers may impersonate the victim to make unauthorized purchases. Victims also complain of loss of funds when attackers access their credit card information. The proposed method has two major subsystems: (1) Data collection: different websites have been collected as a big data corresponding to normal and phishing dataset, and (2) distributed detection system: different artificial algorithms are used: a neural network algorithm and machine learning. The Amazon cloud was used for running the cluster with different cores of machines. The experiment results of the proposed system achieved very good accuracy and detection rate as well.
