Ionic liquid immobilized on mesoporous amorphous silica was prepared from the coupling of 1-(triethoxysilylpropyl)-3-n-alkyl-imidzolium halides with tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) through template-free condensation under strong acidic conditions. The immobilized 1-n-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide ionic liquid on amorphous silica(BMImBr-AS) was proved to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate(DMC) from transesterification of ethylene carbonate(EC) with methanol. High temperature, high carbon dioxide pressure and long reaction time were favorable for the reactivity of BMImBr-AS. Kinetic studies based on two step reactions revealed that the proposed reaction model fitted well the experimental data. The apparent activation energy was estimated to be 67.4 kJ/mol.
We prepared a novel multi-functional dual-layer polymer electrolyte by impregnating the interconnected pores with an ethylene carbonate (EC)/dimethyl carbonate (DMC)/lithium hexafluorophosphate $(LiPF_6)$ solution. The first layer, based on a microporous polyethylene, is incompatible with a liquid electrolyte, and the second layer, based on poly (vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), is submicroporous and compatible with an electrolyte solution. The maximum ionic conductivity is $7{\times}10^{-3}S/cm$ at ambient temperature. A unit cell using the optimum polymer electrolyte showed a reversible capacity of 198 mAh/g at the 500th cycle, which was about 87% of the initial value.
In this paper, the effect of oxygen component in fuel on the exhaust emissions has been investigated for direct injection diesel engine. It is tested to estimate change of engine performance and exhaust emission characteristics for the commercial diesel fuel and oxygenate blended fuel which has four kinds of mixed ratio. And, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission and brake specific fuel consumption rate have been investigated. Dimethyl carbonate(DMC) contains oxygen component 53.3% in itself, and it is a kind of effective oxygenated fuel of carbonate group that the smoke emission of DMC is reduced remarkably in comparison with commercial diesel fuel, that is, it can supply oxygen component sufficiently at higher loads and speeds in diesel engine. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with oxygenated fuel and EGR method.

A laboratory- scale dual-column biofilter system was used to study the biofiltration of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS). The gas flow rate and DMDS concentration to the biofilter were varied to study their effect on the remov-al of dimethyl disulfide. Operating parameters such as pH, temperature, and water content were monitored during the biofilter operation and necessary precautions were taken to keep these parameters within the acceptable limits. It was observed that the removal efficiency of DMDS was optimal at neutral pH values. After five month op-eration, the neutralization of the filter beds with sodium carbonate became necessary for the optimum operation of the biofilters. The microbial population already present in the compost mixtures was found to be adequate in treat-ing DMDS. The compost mixtures were found to be similar in terms of biofiltration efficiency of DMDS. However, pressure drops observed in the first column compost mixture (compost/ peat mulch) was extremely high, making this compost economically not feasible. The second mixture (compost/bark) provided pressure drops within accept-able limits. A minimum residence time of 30 seconds at the optimal operating conditions appeared to be adequate for achieving high removal efficiencies (>90%).
In order to formulate biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate(DDB) aqueous solutions, the effects of various solubilizing agents such as cosolvents(PG, PEG 400, glycerin, ethanol), surfactants,$(poloxamer\;407,\;Cremophor^{\circledR}\; RH40,\;Solutol^{\circledR},\;Tween\;80,\;sodium\;lauryl\;sulfate)$, complexation agent$(CELDEX^{\circledR}\;CH-20)$ and others(urea, niacinamide, propylene carbonate, HPMC) on the solubility of DDB in water were evaluated. The solubility of DDB in water was about $0.21\;{\mu}g/ml\;at\;20^{\circ}C$, while its solubility in PEG 400 was 5,000 times higher than that in water. 60% PEG 400 aqueous solution was selected as an optimum solvent system, and surfactants or other solubilizing agents were added to prevent DDB from recrystalization. The addition of surfactants in water increased the solubility of DDB from 15- to 34-fold, however, $CELDEX^{\circledR}\;CH-20$ and other agents studied showed negligible effects on the solubility of DDB in water. The 60% PEG 400 aqueous solution containing 5% $Cremophor^{\circledR}$ RH40 was appeared as the formula of choice. It showed acceptable physical stability after stored for 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$.
Electrochemical performance of Li-ion cells with $LiMn_2O_4$ cathodes and graphite anodes with carbonates electrolytes containing quaternary ammonium-based room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) is investigated. Eight different ILs based on tetraalkylammonium, pyrrolidinium or piperidinium cations paired with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide or tris(pentafluoroethyl)trifluorophosphate anions are examined in combination with dimethyl carbonate as a main solvent and fluoroethylene carbonate as a solid electrolyte interface forming agent. It is shown that cycling properties of the cells are strongly affected by the content of ILs in the electrolyte mixtures and its increase corresponds to lower discharge capacity retention. Since viscosity and conductivity of ILs are of a great importance for the electrolytes formulation, some kind of combined parameter should be used for the assessment of IL applicability and calculated values of Walden products for neat ILs represent one of the possible options. Besides, positive effect of ILs on reduction of flammability and enhancement of thermal stability of electrolytes in contact with charged electrodes have been demonstrated by means of self-extinguishing time test and differential scanning calorimetry respectively.
Recently, our world is faced with very serious and hard problems related to the air pollution due to the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. So, lots of researchers have studied to reduce the exhaust emissions with various methods of diesel engine that influenced the environment strong. In this paper, the quantities of the low and high hydrocarbon among the exhaust emissions in diesel engine have been investigated by the quantitative analysis of the hydrocarbon $C_1{\sim}C_6$ using the gas chromatography. This study carried out by comparing the chromatogram with diesel fuel and three kinds of mixed fuels. One is the diesel fuel blended DGM(diethylene glycol dimethyl ether) 5%. Another is the diesel fuel blended DEE(diethyl ether) 25% and DMC(dimethyl carbonate) 10%. The results of this study show that the hydrocarbon $C_1{\sim}C_6$ among the exhaust emissions of the mixed fuels are exhausted lower than those of the diesel fuel at the all load and speed.
To enhance electrochemical performances of anode materials, the surface of coal tar pitch (CTP) was modified by incorporating heteroatoms through chemical treatment with phosphoric acid ($H_3PO_4$). The prepared anode materials with modified CTP was analyzed by XRD, FE-SEM and XPS. The electrochemical performances of modified CTP were investigated by constant current charge/discharge test, rate performance, cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests using the electrolyte of $LiPF_6$ dissolved in the mixed organic solvents (ethylene carbonate : dimethyl carbonate = 1 : 1 vol% + vinylene carbonate 3 wt%). The coin cell using modified CTP ($H_3PO_4/CTP$ = 3 : 100 in weight) has better initial capacity and initial efficiency (489 mAh/g, 82%) than those of other composition coin cells. Also, it was found that the capacity retention was 86% after 30 cycles and the rate capability was 87% at 2 C/0.1 C.
Polymer electrolyte films consisting of poly (vinylidenefluoride-hexafluoro-propylene) (PVdF-HFP) $H_3PO_4$and a mixture of ethylene carbonate(EC), $\gamma$-butyrolactone(BL) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) were examined in order to obtain the best compromise between high protonic conductivity, homogeniety and dimensional stability. Measurements of differential scanning calorimetry and ionic conductivity have been carried out for various compositions. The highest proton conductivity of 7.3 $\times$$10^{-3}Sm^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$ were obtained for a film of 30(PVdF-HFP) + 50EC/DMC + 20H$_3$PO$_4$. From the thermal study, it has been found that the PVdF-HFP gels are stable up to $80^{\circ}C$, and the $H_3PO_4$ enhances the miscibility of the polymer and the solvent by interacting sensitively with polymer segments.
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and ion chromatography(IC) were employed to analyze the thermal behavior of $Li_xCoO_2$ cathode material of lithium ion battery. The mass loss peaks appearing between 60 and 125 ${^{\circ}C}$ in TGA and the exothermic peaks with 4.9 and 7.0 J/g in DSC around 75 and 85 ${^{\circ}C}$ for the $Li_xCoO_2$ cathodes of 4.20 and 4.35 V cells are explained based on disruption of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film. Low temperature induced HF formation through weak interaction between organic electrolyte and LiF is supposed to cause carbonate film disruption reaction, $Li_2CO_3\;+\;2HF{\rightarrow}\;2LiF\;+\;CO_2\;+\;H_2O$. The different spectral DSC/TGA pattern for the cathode of 4.5 V cell has also been explained. Presence of ionic carbonate in the cathode has been identified by ion chromatography and LiF reported by early researchers has been used for explaining the film SEI disruption process. The absence of mass loss peak for the cathode washed with dimethyl carbonate (DMC) implies ionic nature of the film. The thermal behavior above 150 ${^{\circ}C}$ has also been analyzed and presented.
