  • Selective Catalytic Reduction(SCR) has been used for the reduction of $NO_x$ in a steam supply boiler. Recently, the reduction of $NO_x$ becomes an important research field because of its negative effect on an environment. Shape optimization of circular poles installed in the chamber, which is located in upstream of a SCR, has been performed using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to enhance gas flow uniformity. Three design parameters, diameter, arranging angle and stretching ratio of circular poles, are considered in the present study. Throughout the shape optimization of a circular pole, gas flow uniformity is successfully increased by decreasing local recirculation flow in a square duct chamber. Recirculation flow observed in the corner of the square duct can be reduced by proper installation of a guide vane or a blunt body. Detailed flow characteristics are also analyzed and discussed.

  • A novel Fission Diffusion Synthetic Acceleration (FDSA) method is developed and implemented as a part of a hybrid neutronics method for source convergence acceleration and variance reduction in Monte Carlo (MC) criticality calculations. The acceleration of the MC calculation stems from constructing a synthetic operator and solving a low-order problem using information obtained from previous MC calculations. By applying the P1 approximation, two correction terms, one for the scalar flux and the other for the current, can be solved in the low-order problem and applied to the transport solution. A variety of one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) numerical tests are constructed to demonstrate the performance of FDSA in comparison with the standalone MC method and the coupled MC and Coarse Mesh Finite Difference (MC-CMFD) method on both intended purposes. The comparison results show that the acceleration by a factor of 3-10 can be expected for source convergence and the reduction in MC variance is comparable to CMFD in both slab and full core geometries, although the effectiveness of such hybrid methods is limited to systems with small dominance ratios.

  • This paper discusses a refined model for investigating the micro-mechanical behavior of beam-like structures, which are composed of various elastic moduli and complex geometries varying through the cross-section directions and are also periodically-repeated and heterogeneous along the axial direction. Following the previous work (Lee and Yu, 2011), the original three-dimensional static problem is first formulated in a unified and compact form using the concept of decomposition of the rotation tensor. Taking advantage of the smallness of the cross-sectional dimension-to-length parameter and the micro-to-macro heterogeneity, while also performing homogenization along the dimensional reduction simultaneously, the variational asymptotic method is rigorously used to construct a total energy function, which is asymptotically correct up to the second order. Furthermore, through the transformation procedure based on the pure kinematic relations and the linearized equilibrium equations, a generalized Timoshenko model is systematically established. For the purpose of dealing with realistic and complex geometries and constituent materials at the microscopic level, this present approach is incorporated into a commercial analysis package. A few examples available in literature are used to demonstrate the consistency and efficiency of this proposed model, especially for the structures, in which the effects of transverse shear deformations are significant.

  • A two-dimensional flutter analysis method (2d-3DOF method) was developed to simultaneously investigate the relationship between oscillation parameters and aerodynamic derivatives of three degrees of freedom, and to clarify the coupling effects of different degrees of freedom in flutter instability. With this method, the flutter mechanism of two typical bridge deck sections, box girder section and two-isolated-girder section, were numerically investigated, and both differences and common ground in these two typical flutter phenomena are summarized. Then the flutter stabilization effect and its mechanism for long-span bridges with box girders by using central-slotting were studied by experimental investigation of aerodynamic stability and theoretical analysis of stabilizing mechanism. Possible explanation of new findings in the evaluation trend of critical wind speed through central vent width is finally presented.

  • A Bayesian model-based clustering method is proposed for clustering objects on the basis of dissimilarites. This combines two basic ideas. The first is that tile objects have latent positions in a Euclidean space, and that the observed dissimilarities are measurements of the Euclidean distances with error. The second idea is that the latent positions are generated from a mixture of multivariate normal distributions, each one corresponding to a cluster. We estimate the resulting model in a Bayesian way using Markov chain Monte Carlo. The method carries out multidimensional scaling and model-based clustering simultaneously, and yields good object configurations and good clustering results with reasonable measures of clustering uncertainties. In the examples we studied, the clustering results based on low-dimensional configurations were almost as good as those based on high-dimensional ones. Thus tile method can be used as a tool for dimension reduction when clustering high-dimensional objects, which may be useful especially for visual inspection of clusters. We also propose a Bayesian criterion for choosing the dimension of the object configuration and the number of clusters simultaneously. This is easy to compute and works reasonably well in simulations and real examples.

  • High-dimensional survival data with large numbers of predictors has become more common. The analysis of such data can be facilitated if the dimensions of predictors are adequately reduced. Recent studies show that a method called sliced inverse regression (SIR) is an effective dimension reduction tool in high-dimensional survival regression. However, it faces incapability in implementation due to a double categorization procedure. This problem can be overcome in the right-censoring type by transforming the observed survival time and censoring status into a single variable. This provides more flexibility in the categorization, so the applicability of SIR can be enhanced. Numerical studies show that the proposed transforming approach is equally good to (or even better) than the usual SIR application in both balanced and highly-unbalanced censoring status. The real data example also confirms its practical usefulness, so the proposed approach should be an effective and valuable addition to usual statistical practitioners.

  • Fog screens offer a great advantage to be used as scattering screens in three-dimensional displays. In the absence of a fixed rigid form, fog screens work as screens without any physical obstruction. The density of water droplets can be regulated to adjust the screen's transparency and scattering level. This study proposes a method for crosstalk reduction between adjacent viewing windows by decreasing the divergence of view of the projector, with concentration lenses. By applying the Scheimpflug principle, we also reduce the keystone effect, which occurs when the fog screen is slanted with respect to the optical axis. In this study, we have realized a tabletop multiview fog display without any structures on the table and established that the proposed method is feasible for decreasing crosstalk effectively.

  • This paper provides methods for the deterministic and reliability-based design of the support pressures necessary to prevent tunnel face collapse. The deterministic method is developed by extending the use of the unique load multiplier, which is embedded within OptumG2/G3 with the intention of determining the maximum load that can be supported by a system. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional examples are presented to illustrate the applications. The obtained solutions are validated according to those derived from the existing methods. The reliability-based method is developed by incorporating the Response Surface Method and the advanced first-order second-moment reliability method into the bisection algorithm, which continuously updates the support pressure within previously determined brackets until the difference between the computed reliability index and the user-defined value is less than a specified tolerance. Two-dimensional reliability-based support pressure is compared and validated via Monte Carlo simulations, whereas the three-dimensional solution is compared with the relationship between the support pressure and the resulting reliability index provided in the existing literature. Finally, a parametric study is carried out to investigate the influences of factors on the required support pressure.

  • In this paper, back pressure forging processes of which back pressures are exerted by mechanical forces including spring reaction are simulated by three-dimensional finite element method. The basic three-dimensional approach extended from two-dimensional approach is accounted for. An axisymmetric backward and forward extrusion process having a back pressing die, which is exposed to oscillation of forming load due to variation of reduction ratios with stroke and its related frequent variation of major deforming region, is simulated by both two and three dimensional approaches to justify the presented approach by their comparison. A three-dimensional forging process having a back pressing die attached to the punch by a mechanical spring is simulated and the results are investigated to reveal accuracy of the presented approach.
