  • This study analyzed pore water pressure, seepage and leakage quantity, height of seepage and critical hydraulic gradient in order to suggest the seepage characteristics of agricultural reservoir embankment considering filter interval. The seepage characteristics of a deteriorated reservoir embankments were conducted according to the horizontal filter intervals range using three- dimensional finite element analysis. The wider the horizontal filter interval, the higher the pore water pressure increased, and the pore water pressure ratio in the center of the core has a greater effect than the base part. The seepage and leakage quantity appeared largely in the two-dimensional analysis conditions (case 1), where the filter was constructed totally in the longitudinal direction of the embankment, the wider the horizontal filter interval was gradually reduced. The reasonable filter intervals to yield efficient seepage characteristics were within 30 m for the pore water pressure of the core and the height of the seepage line. The stability of the filter installation was able to evaluate the stability of the piping by the critical hydraulic gradient method. The deteriorated reservoir with no filters or decreased functionality can significantly reduce the possibility of piping by simply installing a filter on the downstream slope. In the future, the deteriorated reservoir embankment should be checked for the reservoir remodeling because the core and filter functions have been lost or decreased significantly. In the case of a new installation, the seepage characteristic behavior due to the core and filter changes should be applied to the field after obtaining a reasonable horizontal filter interval that satisfies the safety factor by a three-dimensional analysis.

  • A two-dimensional circular cylinder freely falling in a channel has been simulated by using immersed boundary - lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) in order to analyze the characteristics of motion originated by the interaction between the fluid flow and the cylinder. The wide range of the solid/fluid density ratio has been considered to identify the effect of the solid/fluid density ratio on the motion characteristics such as the falling time, the transverse force and the trajectory in the streamwise and transverse directions. In addition, the effect of the gap between the cylinder and the wall on the motion of a two-dimensional freely falling circular cylinder has been revealed by taking into account a various range of the gap size. As the cylinder is close to the wall at the initial dropping position, vortex shedding in the wake occurs early since the shear flow formed in the spacing between the cylinder and the wall drives flow instabilities from the initial stage of freely falling. In order to consider the characteristics of transverse motion of the cylinder in the initial stage of freely falling, quantitative information about the cylinder motion variables such as the transverse force, trajectory and settling time has been investigate.

  • This study reviews qualitatively the flow characteristics around th tidal gap during seadike closures using a three-dimensional model for shallow water equations. The Princeton Ocean Model(POM) was adapted and applied to the Sihwa Seadike which was closed in 1994. The simulated flow patterns around the gap showed that tidal velocities increase with the cross-sectional area during ebb tide. The accelerated flow extended to wider zones passing the gap, and shock waves were generated. Vertical tidal velocity profiles were affected as the bottom scours developed beyond normal conditions.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model based on a finite volume method was formulated to solve the shallow water equations and applied for evaluating irrigation and drainage characteristics at large-sized paddy fields. Manning roughness coefficient was calibrated using the observed inundating depths at drainage tests and used for validating the model with the results from irrigation and drainage test. The simulated results were in good agreement with the observed inundating depths.

  • The accurate error size and discrimination region in the perception of depth amount from 3-dimensional images by the human visual system will be the basic data for the utilization and application of the binocular 3- eimensional image system. This paper is focused on studying the accuracy of the depth amount perceived from 3- dimensional images by the human visual system. From the performed experiment, the following results have been obtained: (1) The depth amount perceived from the binocular 3- dimensional images has been displayed by a proper scale of distance, and found to be imprecise and also have a large variance. (2) In utilizing the binocular 3-dimensional image system, it seems more appropriate to make the images viewed outward rather than inward from the screen in the regard of error and variance. (3) The binocular 3-dimensional image system can be effectively applied to displaying unreal space, for example, the layout of room in design, from the viewpoint of perception characteristics of depth amount.

  • This work is concerned with the topology optimization of three-dimensional cooling fins or heat sinks. Motivated by earlier success of the Internal Element Connectivity Method (I-ECP) method in two-dimensional problems, the extension of I-ECP to three-dimensional problems is carried out. The main efforts were made to maintain the numerical trouble-free characteristics of I-ECP for full three-dimensional problems; a serious numerical problem appearing in thermal topology optimization is erroneous temperature undershooting. The effectiveness of the present implementation was checked through the design optimization of three-dimensional fins.

  • Designing of similarity on high dimensional data was done. Similarity measure between high dimensional data was considered by analysing neighbor information with respect to data sets. Obtained result could be applied to big data, because big data has multiple characteristics compared to simple data set. Definitely, analysis of high dimensional data could be the pre-study of big data. High dimensional data analysis was also compared with the conventional similarity. Traditional similarity measure on overlapped data was illustrated, and application to non-overlapped data was carried out. Its usefulness was proved by way of mathematical proof, and verified by calculation of similarity for artificial data example.

  • The purposes of the present study were to investigate the factors of consumer dissatisfaction with backpacks and to examine if the levels of dissatisfaction with the factors differ significantly among the groups determined by demographic characteristics and purchase behaviors. The differences in the purchase behaviors of backpacks were also tested among the groups determined by demographic characteristics. Data collection was consisted of two pilot tests and the final test. The questionnaire was distributed to 40 students of universities in Seoul from July 1 to 13 in 2000 and 351 were usable. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, t-test, χ²analysis, MANOVA, ANAOVA, Duncan's multiple range tests using SPSS PC/sup +/ Program. Five factors were formulated : durability, ease-of-care/color fastness, dimensional stability, wearability and design. Subjects were most dissatisfied with the dimensional stability of backpacks. Different demographic characteristics and purchase behaviors resulted in significantly different levels of dissatisfaction with selected factors. Significant differences were also found in selected selection criteria and purchase behaviors among groups determined by some demographic characteristics.

  • This paper presents some of the results of current research on 400kN Suspension Insulator Design. In this paper, authors carried out 2-dimensional field calculation in order to analyse dielectric characteristics of the insulator unit and 3-dimensional field calculation in order to analyse dielectric characteristics of the insulator strings. And the results of puncture tests of insulators were compared with the required field intensity of the insulator As results, it was found that electric field on the insulator unit is severest between two triple junctions, dielectric characteristics of insulator strings are much influenced by the surrounding configuration and the manufactured insulators have good results of puncture tests.

  • As external data have become important corporate information resources, there are growing needs to combine them with internal data. This paper proposes an ontology-based scheme to combine external data with multi-dimensional databases, which shall be called multi-dimensional event ontology. In the ontology, external data are represented as events. Event characteristics such as actors, places, times, targets are linked to dimensions of a multi-dimensional database. By mapping event characteristics to database dimensions, external event data are shared via multi-dimensional hierarchies. This paper proposes rules to synchronize information sharing in multi-dimensional event ontology such as upward event information sharing, downward event information sharing and complex event information sharing. These rules are implemented using Protege. This study has a value in suggesting Big Data information sharing processes using an event database framework.
